Cycling the Yufu Bikeway 玉富自行車道, Yuli: Riding Between Two Tectonic Plates, 玉里, 花蓮, Taiwan (Mar’25)

Good afternoon from the serene township of Uli Wallian County, Taiwan. After devouring a hearty bowl of Uli noodles from Aco, it’s time to burn off those calories. For cyclists looking for a scenic ride in Taiwan, the Yufu bikeway is a hidden gem. This 10 kilometer dedicated bike path stretches across Uli and Fui, offering stunning countryside views with zero car traffic, just you, the open road, and a ride through some of Taiwan’s most geologically fascinating landscapes. The official start is near Yu Lei train station where the path begins just after crossing Kangloo Street and Gang Shang Road. Once you pass this intersection, it’s smooth sailing. There is no more traffic. It’s just a peaceful ride alongside the new railway tracks. Just a short ride in you’ll hit Ren Eye Road. Cross carefully and you’ll notice the landscape starts opening up. Endless rice fields and stunning mountain views. The Shu Luang River Bridge was built in 1930 for the railway. By 1989, earthquake damage made train travel too dangerous, leading to a reroute. In 2009, the abandoned tracks were repurposed into the Yu Fu bikeway, making it one of the best cycling routes in Taiwan. This isn’t just any bridge. It straddles the meeting point of the Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate. At the Philippine Eurasian plate marker, you’re literally at the edge of two massive moving land masses. This fault line is one of the most geologically active in the world. The old railway had to be rerouted because earthquakes kept shifting the tracks. This bridge we are standing on is part of a natural geological classroom, showcasing how Earth’s crust constantly moves. If you still have energy left, you can extend your adventure and continue south towards the Dong Lee station. Follow the bike way and Highway 30 to reach this historic old train station, now a quiet rest stop surrounded by rice fields. If you are heading back to Uli Town, stop by the Chungjalu Yang Cafe, a cozy spot near the start of the bikeway. It is perfect for a coffee or tea break after the ride. The Yufu bikeway isn’t just another cycling route. It’s a ride through history, geology, and stunning landscapes. Whether you’re here for the science, the scenery, or the cycling, this ride delivers an unforgettable experience.
