Riding distance: 34km Total distance: 512km
The Shimanto River is known as the last clear stream in Japan, especially its unique submersible bridge. Although today was a rest day, I still arranged a 30km trip to ride along both sides of the Shimanto River.
I walked from the hotel via the famous Shimanto River Red Iron Bridge to the river embankment on the opposite side. After a few kilometers, I turned onto the riverside alleyway. The road was very narrow and the road condition was rough. It was no wonder that I only encountered one small car for several kilometers. It took about 7km to reach Imanari (Sada) Submersible Bridge.
Then I turned out of Prefecture Road 340, which I passed yesterday. After passing the narrowest section of the road, I turned out of National Rt. 441 via the village road and went to Yasunami Waterwheels. There was a wooden waterwheel here that pumping water from the canal to irrigate the waterway.
After checking in and putting off the aerial camera, I went downstream along the Shimanto River to Shimantoya to eat eel rice. There were two types of eel rice here, wild and farmed. The wild eel was more than 1.5 times of the price of the farmed eel. I ordered a wild eel set meal. The texture of the eel meat was more chewy than the farmed eels.
After dinner, I went to Daiso in a nearby shopping mall to see if I coukld find a rearview mirror without any success. Japanese people might be used to riding bicycles on the sidewalk and needn’t to install rear mirrors🤔🤔
Finally, I took Route 56 to Shimanto City Street and the station. It might be a Sunday and most of the shops were closed.
