The “Tour de Fukushima 2024,” a cycling road race series for the recovery of Fukushima, concluded its two-day event on September 15. The final day featured four race categories across municipalities in the Hamadori region and the Abukuma Highlands, areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Riders tackled challenging, hilly courses and experienced the natural beauty and diversity of Fukushima Prefecture.
Participants in the 245-kilometer “Fukushima 240” and “Ekiden 240” (relay race with teams of three) as well as the one-day “Fukushima 160” (160 kilometers) started from Tsurushi Disaster Prevention Green Park in Shinchi Town. Meanwhile, the participants of the shortest race, the “Fukushima 20” (23 kilometers), began from the main building of the Okuma Town Hall. All races finished at J-Village, located in Naraha and Hirono Towns, where riders were greeted with applause from residents and supporters as they crossed the finish line.
The event took place across 15 municipalities, including 12 affected by evacuation zones due to the nuclear accident and three coastal towns—Iwaki, Soma, and Shinchi—impacted by the tsunami. After being canceled last year due to heavy rain, this marked the first time the event was held. Many of the courses overlapped with proposed routes for a National Cycling Route (NCR) designation, a status the prefecture is aiming to achieve. The event boosted momentum for the designation, which would be the first in the Tohoku region, and promoted the development of a bicycle-friendly Fukushima Prefecture.
