Once described as Scotland’s longest, loneliest and loveliest glen, Glen Lyon stretches 34 miles from Loch Lyon to the village of Fortingall in the beautiful Perthshire countryside.
In Scotland, the word glen is used to describe a valley and there are over 40 glens in Scotland. You’ve probably heard of some of the famous Glens like Glen Coe, Glen Etive or Glen Shee.
Glen Lyon is said to be one of Scotland’s most beautiful and remote glens, rich in history and legend. The history of the glen spans thousands of years and was historically part of the land controlled by the Clan Campbell, who were a powerful force in the area.
As I drive down Scotland’s longest glen, a surprise awaits me…

WHO AM I?
If we haven’t met before… Hi, I’m Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.

Hi Ruth. My husband and I enjoy your videos. Several months ago, you liked italki. Do you still use that?
Every time I glance over to the memorabilia (from distilleries) I purchased from your beautiful country, not enough I am coming back. Your videos is making it more tempting. I need to visit Islay, Glenfarclas, Glenturret, Orkney . Been there but need to visit SPACA
You know, if you keep your van a couple of more years it will be over 25 and count as a classic. Think you then save money on road tax or something. Well, I think so. I might just be spouting rubbish. 😃 Love your videos.. Thankyou. Oh, and well done on helping out those stranded people. 🙂
shitting peugeot
Very enjoyable as always, great filming of the pilot coming aboard coming into Cherbourg
❤ What an incredible series so far. Thank you for all your hard work and beautiful videos.
You're a good person, Ruth. Great vlog.
Another great video …..I met Ruth a few days ago on The Isle of Islay…it was lovely to meet you you are friendly in person as you are in your videos
Are you and Bappa still a couple? Will he be in any scotland videos with you? 😊
You’re going to ruin this country.
Very good of you to render such great assistance!
Glen Lyon is possibly my favourite glen. It's a hidden Glen. From Fortingall the road forces it's way past the guardian mountains, then opens up in to a lovely fertile valley. I was there 3 weeks ago and I'm currently wearing my Glen Lyon Tea room T-shirt. I won't say where in the Glen I saw this, but I watched an osprey fishing in the river. From Bridge of Balgie, there's a side road that leads over a pass between the Ptarmigan ridge and Ben Lawers, it's a spectacular road and passes a very photogenic series of waterfalls, with a new path making access easier.
Thank you for rescuing the stranded travellers. Last week one of my fuel injectors failed and I was stranded on the side of Loch Awe
While you're in Aberfeldy you should go up the Birks, especially in Autumn for the tree colours, at the head of the walk is one of the UK's best waterfalls, further along Loch Tay, at Acharn, is another spectacular waterfall.
Great video!!!
A bonnie Scottish lass
I live in New Zealand and am always struck by how much Scotland and New Zealand look alike. I imagine I could live in Scotland and feel like I'm in New Zealand.
Yes, please – a van tour would be excellent!! 👍🏼👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺
thanks for another calming video ruth. I've lived in scotland for the past 20 years and as such, take it a bit for granted. you're making me see the beauty in it more, so i really appreciate your videos. ❤
I live quite near Glen Lyon. I've driven to the end of the glen a while ago. I must pay it and Aberfeldy another visit. These people were very lucky to have met you!
Ruth You are an angel The world would be a better place with more like you. I love Scotland myself and seeing it through your eyes is a priviledge
Am so glad you mentioned the Cailleach! I love Her stories and wildness. We have thatched cottages all over Dorset where I live, not so common in Scotland though I imagine. 🙂
A beautiful landscape and countryside!
Really enjoying these videos, especially Scotland! I'll definitely be hoping you visit Duart Castle soon.
スターリンクを持ったRuthさんに出会えるなんて、故障した人も運がいいですね。
I love your videos and the way you give so much history and beautiful footage of the Scottish countryside. Makes a person want to go there and experience it. Thank you.
Missing you, Ruth. Hope you are well & we are waiting for more videos. Love your channel!!! 🤗❤️
Hello Ruth. My name is Patrick and I have been enamored with your Scottish exploration. I too spent time at n Japan, 6 years with the US Navy. I have distant roots in the McPherson line. Thank you for sharing your joy. 😊
General wades roads we're not built to help the Scots they were built to help subjugate the Scots to put them down, i wonder at your ideas on Scotlands history you seem very pro the english uk.
Stunning blue sky video. Well worth the wait for such good weather. Big shout out to Elon Musks Starlink internet too!

Thanks for the tour of a Glen that was on my list for a visit with me electric mountain bike but as the summer was so poor I never got the chance. Definitely a trip for next year.
Yes please to van tour.
My second podcast viewed and I must say your natural charm compliments the exciting journeys, well done young lady you are now added to my podcast viewing!
Yes please to another "van tour"! We are looking to buy a camper van in the near future and all your hints and tips are really useful!
About a glen. I like Glenfiddich the most 🤣🤣🥃
I had to laugh at my self. When you said you left the stranded folks a thousand pounds of equipment, I was thinking, "I'm surprised that equipment weighs so much." It occurred to me later, you were referring to 1,000 pounds Stirling. Good on Ya for helping these folks! Great video! Cheers.
In memory of your ancestor George, I'm ex forces, and visit a gentleman who is an ex RSM of the Black Watch, he was born 9 years after your relative passed, in 1927, he'll be 98 in January.
A valley in Scotland is known as a Glen, you should know better, you're Scottish.
Discovered Ruth's channel yesterday and having a great time. Watched the bothy and Muck videos last night. This one, Glen Lyon, I have been to. Ruth did not mention that Fortingall is the reputed birthplace of Pontius Pilate, and there are ancient legends that Jesus and Mary were also down Glen Lyon. There is a well-researched book about Jesus travelling about Scotland. Some inexplicable clues remain.
What's funny to me is when all the lockdown nonsense happened, I did a walk of the UK with my dog and I had no plans…. I don't even drive and I'm 40 now lol. I didn't realise how mild the UK was, I did the whole thing in shorts and a tshirt and never got cold even up the hills. I spent 2 years just walking around with no money or anything, it was so good and I miss it. Though when you're walking alone in the dark you put the fear of God into people, that was one thing I do not miss. Sadly my dog died since 🙁 I'm glad we had those final years together though, rather than him being at home on his own while I was at work.
It was very nice of you to help those people out.
