What a Small Town in Japan is Like

Welcome to Kofu, Tottori. Population 2,500.

Yes, I called the town hall “city hall” a couple times. Please let that be the smallest mistake.

  1. In a world filled with short-form, low-effort and clickbaity content, please, PLEASE never change your amazing documentary-style videos and insights on places in Japan, that many viewers can be educated on from all around the world. I felt like I was with you and Akko documenting Kofu, it was immersive and I learnd so much. What you do is amazing, and you should be crazy proud of it, from a silent viewer of many years– thank you so much for this amazing experience! (´・ᴗ・ ` )

  2. Japan is my ideal of country/city. Currently I'm living in the US but am getting TF out of here by the end of year. So MANY GUNS, GUNS, and MORE GUNS. MASS shooting in FACT OF LIFE here in the US. Crime & violence are as common as breathing the air. I'm super sick and tired of it. Something "happened" to the United States in the past five years, they're letting criminals do whatever they want with ZERO enforcement. You can't even walk down the streets in BROAD DAYLIGHT without being "mindful" of your surroundings. It's nuts.

  3. What an interesting and engaging tour. The town seems to really have its act together. The grocery truck is a genius idea that the US only figured out due to the pandemic. As a side note, the kind of clustered village that Kofu presents is a very common thing in Europe, and no one seems to agree why people live squeezed together, with fields surrounding them.

  4. I've been to Kofu before because I accidentally took the wrong train outside of Tokyo when I was studying there. People were definitely curious what I was doing walking around there. I saw a lot of elders looking at me from their backyards. Charming town, though.

  5. Sumimasen! I'm almost certain that it's in here somewhere but … please post the URL for the Immigration and Relocation team, thank you in advance!!! 🙏🙏🙏 ( of course I'm sure to find it *now*!! ) 🤦‍♂️

  6. The mobile grocery is such a valuable service. Maybe 20 years ago I watched a movie about a similar service in, I think, the French Alps. Can't remember the name of the movie.

  7. This was simply beautiful, Kofu is such a beautiful town with amazing people. Thanks Greg and Ako for sharing – would love to drive through Kofu when I visit japan this year 😊

  8. This is a wonderful documentary on this town. For all the challenges faced by rural towns in Japan today, it's wonderful to see the community dynamic and problem-solving, from the man operating both a mobile grocery/general supply store and doing wellness checks to the clustered houses. That school looks like a wonderful community space, in addition to being a well equipped school for such a small town.

  9. Some areas are super-strict about what can be done with a piece of property. I've been actively searching for a place to build a house with detached building (car garage/small business) and it's been extremely difficult in the area I want to be. Maybe these shrinking rural areas are more willing to ease restrictions, but it's still something that prevents people from moving out of the cities.

  10. The only issue even in the states I have with small towns, is that they can usually be far away from hobby/game stores. Which means lacking in people to meet at such stores to play the games I enjoy.

Otherwise I would live in one as the nice quite nature of them is preferable to bustling city and even suburbs.
