大糸線 ~桜咲く季節~

The Oito Line is a railway line that connects Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture to Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture. Like other places, the cold winter weather is easing up and the warmth of spring is beginning to appear in this region. Along the Oito Line, flowers heralding the arrival of spring are blooming one after another. Once the first flowers that herald the arrival of spring are finished, cherry blossom season will soon arrive. Early April. Matsumoto city is painted in pale pink, and people are seen enjoying the cherry blossoms. Matsumoto Station is the central station of Matsumoto City and the starting point of the Oito Line. First, let’s take a look at the cherry blossoms in Matsumoto City! Matsumoto Castle is designated as a national treasure of Japan. In Matsumoto Castle Park and the surrounding moat, about 300 cherry trees bloom in full glory against the backdrop of the snow-capped Northern Alps. During cherry blossom season, the castle tower and gardens are lit up. The scenery created by the black lacquered castle and cherry blossoms is beautiful. About 3 km southeast from Matsumoto city, you can see a spot where the entire mountain is dyed pink. This pink-hued place is called "Koboyama Kofun Park." The entire hill is covered with approximately 4,000 cherry trees. When you step into the cherry blossom forest, a world of pale pink unfolds before your eyes. Let’s climb to the top! *Kofun are ancient Japanese graves. Please visit with respect. The view from the top of the mound is magnificent, with Matsumoto Plain below, Azumino to the north, the entrance to the Kiso Valley to the south, > and the Northern Alps mountain range in the background. The train leaves Matsumoto, crosses the Azusa River, and enters Azumino, an alluvial fan-shaped area at the foot of the Northern Alps. JR Hotaka Station. Hotaka Station is the base station for sightseeing in Azumino and is also an important stop for those enjoying mountain climbing. The rotary in front of the station is decorated with a bronze statue created by local sculptor Ogawa Taikei. Now let’s take a look at the cherry blossoms blooming in Azumino! Along the bank of the Hotaka River, there is a monument commemorating "Soshunfu," a representative Japanese lyric song written by lyricist Yoshimaru Kazumasa. Even though it’s a warm spring in many places, it’s still snowing in Azumino… The song that sings of such feelings is Soshunfu. A solar-powered music box has been installed next to the monument, so you can listen to the melody of Soshunfu at any time. At Jikkasegi Bicycle Park you can enjoy the view of Mount Jonen and the cherry blossoms in the Northern Alps. Jikkasegi is an irrigation canal with a total length of approximately 15 km that was built for irrigation purposes in the late Edo period. It has a very gentle current and is the largest of Azumino’s irrigation channels. Fresh greenery, cherry blossoms, and snow-capped mountains…> The bicycle park is bustling with people enjoying spring. At Jounen Dosojin Shrine, two cherry trees bloom as if they are leaning close to each other. In the Satoyama Culture Zone of the Hotaka/Horigane area of the National Alps Azumino Park, a large weeping cherry tree, the Iwahara Oshidare Sakura, is in full bloom. This cherry tree is vigorous and well worth seeing. The Tatai district is located at the foot of the mountains in the Horigane area of Azumino City. A magnificent weeping cherry tree stands on the gently sloping graveyard. *This is a graveyard. Please visit with respect. The cherry blossoms at Tatai hang down so long they look like willow trees. Beautiful cherry blossoms can be seen everywhere in this area. The Kurosawa River flows through the Misato area of Azumino City. A row of cherry trees stretches for about 1 km on both sides of the river. *This is a graveyard. Please visit with respect. The most famous cherry tree in the Ogura district of Azumino City is probably the Kita-Ogura Weeping Cherry Tree. This is a magnificent tree blooming in a gently sloping mountain village. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom everywhere, from residential areas to fields… > That’s the kind of place Azumino is. After the Azumino area, the train enters the Omachi area. There is a lone cherry blossom blooming in the rice paddy area near Azumikutsukake Station. Its name is "Sunuma’s Ippon-zakura." This cherry tree blooms around the time the rice fields are plowed in preparation for planting, > so it is also known locally as "Tauchizakura" (rice field-pulling cherry blossom) and has been used as a guide for paddy field cultivation. This beautiful cherry blossom tree blooms against the backdrop of the Northern Alps, including Mount Jigatake and Mount Kashima-Yari. JR Shinano-Omachi Station. It is located in the city center of Omachi, and all trains, including express trains, stop here. This station is the base for sightseeing in Omachi, including Kurobe Dam, Takase Valley, and the three Nishina Lakes. Now let’s take a look around the area! Reishoji Temple is located on the mountainside, and its bell tower offers a panoramic view of Omachi city. This temple was founded about 600 years ago, and you can see beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons, > including cherry blossoms, fresh greenery, autumn leaves, and snowscapes. If you are planning to walk to Reishoji Temple, which we have just introduced, or Omachi Park, which we will introduce next, we recommend that you use the Omachi Tourist Road. You can enjoy the magnificent view of the Northern Alps while gazing at the rows of cherry blossom trees. Omachi Park is a 25-minute walk from Shinano-Omachi Station. The scenery can be enjoyed throughout the year, but it is especially popular in spring with its beautiful cherry blossoms and spectacular views of the Northern Alps. The Cherry Blossom Festival is held during the cherry blossom season. Now, let’s leave Omachi and head to the Nishina Sanko area! After passing Shinano Omachi, you will come to the Nishina Sanko area. Lake Nakatsuna is the smallest of the Nishina-sanko Lake. Now that spring has arrived, you can see people fishing for crucian carp along the lakeside. Lake Nakatsuna is not usually a very popular lake, but in spring it becomes very lively. > The reason for this is th e reflection of the Ooyamazakura cherry blossoms on the lake surface. During the day, the wind blows and churns the water surface, so the best time to go is early in the morning when there is relatively little wind. In the clear air, the oyamazakura flowers are reflected on the calm lake surface. If it’s a clear morning during peak bloom, you will be very lucky! The Nishina-sanko Lake spread out at the foot of the Northern Alps. In spring, they also display beautiful cherry blossom scenery. After passing Nishina-sanko Lake, you will enter the Hakuba area from Omachi city. Near Iimori Station, there is a cherry tree blooming alone in a rice field. This tree is the "Kamishiro’s Lone Cherry Tree." Although it is not a particularly famous cherry tree, the sight of it blooming solitary against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains is impressive. Hakuba Village is a resort area that can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons. JR Hakuba Station is the central station. Now let’s take a look at Hakuba Village in spring! In spring, you can see white magnolia flowers everywhere, but a typical large magnolia tree can be found about 1 km from Hakuba Station. It’s "shijyukuin’s magnolia." When water is poured into the rice fields in front of you, the reflection in the water makes this a popular spring photo spot. If you walk about 200 meters from "shijyukuin’s magnolia" you will reach Himekawa River. The row of cherry trees begins downstream from Shimogawara Ohashi Bridge. After seeing the shijyukuin’s magnolia, it might be a good idea to take a look at Shimokawahara Ohashi Bridge. Let’s go to Oide Park, which is downstream from here. The Oide Suspension Bridge is often featured in magazines and posters. It is only about 1.2 km from Hakuba Station, so it only takes about 15 minutes to walk there. Let’s go to the observation deck. The view of the Oide Suspension Bridge, the shirouma Sanzan mountains in the background, and the clear waters of the Hime River in the foreground are representative of Hakuba Village. It is especially spectacular during cherry blossom season. 1.2 km northeast from Hakuba Station. Cross the Matsukawa River and the cherry blossom trees that line the road from the nearby intersection are beautiful. This is not a tourist attraction, but it is a rare spot where you can see the snow-capped Shirouma Sanzan mountains and rows of cherry blossoms. A majestic weeping cherry tree is in bloom near the "Iwatake Iriguchi" traffic light. This is the "Tetsunen Sakura of Mt. Dengyō." The name "Tetsunenzakura" was apparently derived from the name of the person who planted it. The cherry trees that bloom at the entrance to Mt. Dengyō are a very interesting sight. From here, the Oito Line heads towards Minami-Otari Station, the last station in the electrified section under the jurisdiction of JR East. Otari Village is adjacent to Hakuba Village, and both villages are designated as areas with particularly heavy snowfall. By the end of April, when cherry blossom season arrived, the snow had melted, just like in Hakuba Village. Minami-Otari Station is located along the Hime River, which runs through the center of the village. The terminus of the Oito Line is Itoigawa Station, but Minami-Otari Station is the border station between JR East and JR West, > and from here onwards diesel trains run on the non-electrified section under the jurisdiction of JR West. Let’s take a look around Otari Village. Just past Minami-Otari Station, turn onto National Route 148 towards the Himekawa River and climb the mountain road for> about 6km to reach Chobo no Sato Campground, which offers a panoramic view of the center of Otari village. Chobo no Sato Campsite is located at an altitude of 1,000 meters, and there are over 150 cherry trees planted on the premises. The pristine landscape of Otari village spreads out below you. It starts with the Morgenrot colors the Northern Alps and ends with the Abenrot…At night, the sky is filled with stars… The cherry blossom season is nice, but the location is also dreamy in spring, summer, and autumn. A diesel train departs from Minami-Otari Station. From here onwards, the line is non-electrified and has no overhead lines. After leaving Minami-Otari Station, the train passes through four stations before arriving at Kotaki Station. Beautiful cherry blossoms are in bloom in front of Kotaki Station. The road to Kotakigawa Hisui Gorge opens in late April, so you won’t be able to visit in mid-April. However,> once it opens in early May, you’ll be able to enjoy the snow-capped mountains around the gorge. After leaving Kotaki and passing through Nechi, the next station is Kubiki-Oono Station. Let’s take a look at Miyama Park, a famous cherry blossom viewing spot nearby. Within the park, a tunnel of cherry blossom trees signals the arrival of spring. In spring, Miyama Park’s 600 or so cherry trees burst into full bloom. Miyama Park is home to the Fossa Magna Museum and the Chojagahara ruins, a national historic site. In 2016, a major fire occurred in front of Itoigawa Station. The "Cherry Blossom of Hope" planted as a symbol of the area’s recovery was also in bloom. This is the view from the Water Tank Observation Deck located within the park. Mount Amakazari is in the background to the right, and Mount Kubiki Komagatake is in the foreground on the left. From this observation deck you can see the snow-capped mountains and the Sea of Japan. Leave Kubiki-Ono Station and head to the next cherry blossom spot. This is Himekawa Sakurazutsumi, located on the right bank, 1.3km from the mouth of the Himekawa River. There are about 500 cherry blossom trees in bloom here. You can get to this location by bus from the last stop, Itoigawa Station. The journey takes about 10 minutes. The snow-capped Amakazari Mountain and the row of cherry blossom trees are an impressive sight. Itoigawa Station is the terminal station of the Oito Line. The Oito Line train, which has traveled 105.4 km since leaving Matsumoto, is waiting at the platform. You can see the Sea of Japan from the Hokuriku Shinkansen platform on the third floor. Let’s go see the famous cherry blossom spots around Itoigawa! The Oumi Sogo Ground is located about 7km from Itoigawa Station towards Toyama. The contrast between the cherry blossoms and the remaining snow on Mt. Kurohime is popular, and many people visit to take photos and enjoy the sights. Approximately 260 Somei Yoshino trees have been planted, and when they are in bloom, the Oumi Cherry Blossom Viewing Party is held and the trees are lit up. Finally, we will introduce "Umikawa no Sakurazutsumi". About 2km from Itoigawa Station towards Joetsu, you will come across Sakurazutsumi at Umikawa. The cherry trees here are young, but they flower beautifully, and recently have become a popular new spot for cherry blossom viewing. Just like from Oumi Sogo Ground, you can see Mt. Kurohime from here too. Along the Oito Line, cherry blossoms first bloom in the Itoigawa and Matsumoto areas, which are at lower altitudes, then in the Azumino area, > and finally in the Hakuba area, which is at higher altitudes. Along the way, you will see cherry trees that have been carefully protected in each village, cherry trees that no one will notice blooming against the backdrop of the Northern Alps,> and cherry trees along the riverbank that were planted for the people, all of which are blooming with all their might. Cherry blossoms only bloom for a few days… The scenery created by the snow-capped mountains and their fleeting beauty is sure to touch your heart. We wish you a wonderful trip!
