撮影中に炎上、その後復活したカフェレーサー仕様のハーレーと仲間たちの軌跡
I am currently riding Harley Davidson Sportster This is a 1996 model. But It burned down, and I replaced the engine with a Buell 1999 S1W engine. And… I’m also riding a 1942 Harley Davidson WL. This is a motorcycle from the prewar era. In addition, although I has not yet disclosed to the public,
I own another Sportster. 1992 Sportster I’m currently building And as for flat track racing use, I also own a 250cc Honda Clubman customized as a tracker for off-road fun, and I own a Honda FTR223. total of five motorcycles. Although I ride a Harley most of the time,
I changes the bike I ride depending on who I am riding with. The old WL can’t keep up with the Sportsters, nor can it keep up with the shovelheads. So Basically, I ride a Sportster. The first person I met was Kohei. We knew each other on instagram
But did not follow each other. At one point, another friend of mine who rides a Sportster invited me to an event where we would ride along bay road with various bikes. Then Kohei came, too. we were both interested in each other. Because we both have Yamaha tanks That is where we first talked.
So we made a promise and ran together the next morning. That was our meeting. He’s riding a brat style XS650 It is fully customized and… its displacement has been bored up to 750cc. Most of the Yamaha XSs I know are cafe racer or chopper style. That is the style I envision for XS.
From the time we met, he had a custom that looked like dirt racer. That style really hooked me. The 2-in-1 muffler coming out of the left side is also super cool. But… I hated him because he was handsome. What is this guy? He’s handsome and rides such a cool bike.
I get along with him like that. Another person I became friends with next was yuusuke. He now also rides a shovelhead Sportster, but at the time we met, he only owned a CB400Four. That CB400Four is outstandingly cool. Many people tend to keep the original coloring and shape of the CB400Four.
And many run it in its original form. Or I thought it was either that customize bousouzoku. This CB does not fall into either category and is so customized that it loses its original form. In addition, When the four of us were riding, I thought I didn’t see yuusuke,
But then I heard a quacking sound coming from behind us and he passed us. Son of a bitch! and the three of us would chase after him and play with them, which is the usual pattern. And finally, another one is Masaru. Masaru rides on a BMW.
Few young people rode on BMWs back then. What the hell is this? What the heck is this engine? I think it was then that I first learned about BMW’s horizontally opposed engine. Engine popping out to the side At first, it was just a curiosity, but…
The more I looked at it, the more I found it to be a very tasty. Not only that, but humor is subtly hidden. On the rear of the seat of this bike is written ”W” “A” “SE” No, “SW” What does this mean? I asked him. He said ”We are Setagaya wreckers”.
You say “We are” but you are alone. It’s such a funny old man and a cool BMW. As for trouble, there’s very little of it anymore, after it burned down. When the Sportstar burned down, all that remained was the frame, front and rear wheels, and front fork; I changed all other parts.
A store I trust, Twin Cycle, reassembled everything but the engine contents. By redoing all the electrical wiring, I guess the battery used to go up once or twice a year and the coils used to get broken, but those problems have completely disappeared. If I turn the cell, it will run as it should,
Like Japanese motorcycles. I can now ride with such ease. Your motorcycle on fire? What was the cause and circumstances of the fire? That was two years ago, right? Two years ago in September, no, I think it was the end of August. For the first time,
We decided to do a photo shoot with Nostalgicbike. Originally, the entire shoot was supposed to be over in that one day. Right? But, That was a couple of hours after we started. In Shibuya, there is a street lined with hotels and clubs that I call “ero-michi” (erotic road).
At the entrance to a street, at the bottom of a hill, You said you wanted to shoot a scene of a motorcycle starting We started the engine with three of my friends to be cool. And you said, when you give us the signal, we must start. And,
You gave us the start signal, and we started. Something was wrong with my bike. That day, the bike had been in good shape until then, but suddenly it was not. Still, I pushed on up the hill, and when I reached a point where I could not see the starting point,
My friend said from behind me, Yano! Your bike is on fire! Is it on fire? No way. So I looked at my side and saw that I was really on fire. I couldn’t see well, but there was definitely fire. It was only then that I realized. So,
If now that I’ve experienced it, I think I can handle it calmly. At the time, It was the first time I had ever experienced that. Above the burning fire is a tank full of gasoline. This means that it would be dangerous to let the bike stand at this point.
With that in mind, I knocked the bike sideways. Of course, This would have caused gasoline to spill from the tank and ignite further. As a result, totally destroyed by fire. This is such an embarrassing story. The cause was a carburetor maintenance error. At the time, I wanted to go very fast,
So I adjusted the carburetor myself to go as fast as possible. Perhaps a slight slight addition or subtraction caused an overflow and gasoline leaked out. The result was a fire on the outside of the carburetor, which was out of control. That is the story. While some people admire old motorcycles,
Those who are planning to ride them should know about old motorcycles to some extent. That’s what I think. If a carburetor suddenly catches fire, most people don’t know what to do. If a fire erupts, use a fire extinguisher! No doubt about it! I would like to know what happened then.
Recalling the scene, tell me what the process was from the point where the fire started to the point where the fire was extinguished. where you ran into the place, who helped you, and what you did there? Yes,sir. After the fire was lit, as I told you earlier,
I was scared and knocked the bike sideways. Then gasoline ignited and the fire spread quickly. At downtown in the middle of Shibuya, And not in a glamorous downtown, but in a dark downtown. It was burning in such a place. The location was around the front of the club Womb.
Diagonally across the street was a Lawson convenience store. Water is the first thing to extinguish a fire! I wonder what time it was. It was about 10 o’clock at night. The Lawson store was quite crowded. But I didn’t care about that, and carried as much 2-liter bottled water
As I could carry. Sorry! Let me just buy this! Right now!! Were there other customers in line? There was a line. But I pushed through the line and said, “My bike is on fire, please, let me buy it!” Then, the water I bought was not effective at all
When I put it on the fire. I later learned that it was rather dangerous to splash water on them. I didn’t know that at the time, so we frantically poured water on it. My friends were afraid to go near the fire, so they threw plastic bottles.
There were just plastic bottles lying around. What are you doing? Seeing such a situation, I knew I couldn’t go on like this. With that in mind, I went back to Lawson again. Then the clerk was a foreigner. I asked the foreign clerk to bring me a fire extinguisher.
Now is on fire and I want to put it out! Extinguisher please! He seemed to understand what I was saying, but he didn’t know where the fire extinguisher was. Please! Seriously, lend me! Extinguisher! He managed to lend it to me, and I went outside.
In outside, I see a club in front of me and a naughty hotel next door. naughty hotel, naughty hotel, and club, club. People were coming out of those four buildings. “Use this,” a girl in a fancy costume from the club handed me a fire extinguisher. a girl? Right.
She also lent me a fire extinguisher. I was a little embarrassed. I collected the fire extinguishers they lent me. For some reason, my friends didn’t help me much. In this scene. The first thing I did was to use a fire extinguisher I borrowed from Lawson.
Did you know there are three types of fire extinguishers? The first fire extinguisher I used was the foam type. No effect at all. What the hell is this? There are four left. Next was the foam type too, but it was a bit powdery. This one seemed to work a little better.
But the fire hasn’t gone out at all yet. The next one I picked up was the powder type. The area went completely white and nothing could be seen. The powder is probably an air blocker. So the fire went out. Because the air supply is no longer available. So the fire was extinguished.
Immediately after, Seven huge fire trucks arrived. Since it was a back street in Shibuya, not all could come in, so three cars waited on the front street. I asked later. Why did so many come? They said because it’s a downtown area and it would be dangerous if it exploded or something.
By the time I was talking about this, behind me Fuji Television’s TV camera had already come. I wonder which department do they belong to? I don’t know, but Perhaps… Perhaps there is a department monitoring twitter etc. a news-related department. They came to the scene the moment they saw Twitter. Only Fuji TV came,
But it was meh and fast. You mean someone posted it on Twitter? Yes, it was posted. I looked at it later and saw a lot of posts. Who posted that? It was, of course, posted by a passerby in Shibuya. “Harley’s on fire lol.” At the time,
We were in the midst of the Corona disaster. Although a state of emergency had not been declared, it was a time when people said it was nonsense to go out at night. That’s when you said you want to shoot. So we were out. At such a time,
If a motorcycle was on fire in downtown Shibuya, I would take pictures and videos too. I know the feeling. I don’t blame them. Eventually, that Twitter video was sold to Fuji TV. We had it used well in the news. And it wasn’t just one person who was posting. I wonder how many…
Six or seven people posted. How did you feel then? For example, someone posted a video of your motorcycle on fire on Twitter. Did you receive any accusations or attacks from people who saw the video? I think I did. Oh, you didn’t see it? No,I did not see it. I don’t care.
It’s simply that the bike caught fire, right? That’s because we use gasoline. I didn’t think to see it at all. That might be healthy. You mean you didn’t care much? Yes, I think so. I think people will care that it was uploaded without their permission.
I think people usually wonder what is being said. Certainly. Not that you dared not saw it? Yeah. I wasn’t careful not to see; I didn’t care. Rather than that, I was more afraid of the power of television. I asked the two girls who had come
What kind of broadcast they were going to do. I told them that I was the owner of the bike and that I did not want it to be broadcast. ”We cannot meet that request.” “Because this is a right.” It’s freedom of the press, freedom of expression. exactly.
I knew this was a bad idea if I left it alone. I thought it was bad, but I had to be convinced. I was talking with my friends afterwards and they approached me. Would you be willing to let me film an interview with you? They said very innocently. Then,
I thought this was my chance. My chance to explain, I thought. Please interview me. I responded. I was interviewed like this. And it was broadcast on Mazamashi TV. It was an early morning 5:00 a.m. show, and they played my video in the opening.
The reason I see TV as more of a threat than social networking is because I work in the TV business. And, Well… I wondered what to do…. If the company finds out, does that mean they’ll make you write an apology? Or…
It’s bad if the name of the company you work for gets a lot of press, right? Does that mean it could cause problems for advertisers as well? And you were afraid of that? Yes, that’s right. Our industry is very easily criticized. Even if it’s not such a big crime, like molestation for example.
No, I don’t mean that molestation is slight. I don’t mean it that way, but if someone in my industry gets caught molesting, etc… Seriously, the media makes a big deal out of it. We’re usually colleagues who work together. It’s supposed to. Their attitudes change abruptly. From the name of the company
To the person’s actual name, it would be reported extensively. I don’t want to inconvenience the company with that. And I don’t want to inconvenience my clients. Furthermore, I also thought that I could be fired from my own company. What on earth are you doing in the midst of this coronal disaster?
How do I explain this to the company? all I can say is that the bike caught on fire. Because it has been broadcast on TV, You know, you almost wreaked havoc! Yes, it is. Sorry about that. Don’t make a scene in the middle of Shibuya like the youth.
Policemans were angry with me. The firefighters were also angry with me. Did the firefighters too? I didn’t notice it at all. I had to be near my bike, they said. I was hanging around and talking with friends. You! Stay put over here! Yes sir.
They took a picture of me pointing at the carburetor. the origin of the fire. Evidence of origin of fire Point your finger here! I feel like a criminal. It’s often on the TV, right? The scene of a criminal in custody. It was exactly like that scene. It’s a crime scene investigation.
Where did the fire start? How did it spread? Though I said I can’t see inside the caburetor. Why don’t you file a lawsuit against Harley-Davidson, Inc. America is a litigious society. It was a complete mistake, mine… I don’t think they will compensate me. It’s so custom that you can’t tell the model.
They’ll say this is not a Harley. It even says YAMAHA on the tank. Then let’s go to YAMAHA. Want to give it a try? “The tank is poorly constructed!” “How are you going to compensate me?” I don’t think I can… This tank is 50 years old, man.
You managed to fix the bike after that. Yeah. Almost every part except the frame was replaced, right? Yeah, I’m sure. What is the biggest change? The most significant change is the engine. It burned anyway, and I wanted to turn that memory into a good one. Before I got this bike,
I was not sure which of the two I would choose. Docati, Buell or Harley? Buell is a sport bike with a Harley engine. In short, I like fast bikes. I have a lot of friends who ride cool bikes with injections. Bikes with injection are very fast. Because they are smart.
After all, I don’t want to lose. All right! The engine is completely burnt out. Steel rusts when exposed to fire extinguishers. Either way, the engine is no longer available. All right! Let’s put Buell’s engine on it! I bought a Buell engine without thinking, put it in my bike, and was just happy.
According to the bike shop, it was super hard to get the bike through inspection. What do you mean? In short, it is a matter of engine model number. The model number of the engine on the inspection certificate would change. The base is the same engine, but it is complicated by the different manufacturer.
But the engine performance has changed dramatically. Does that mean it’s faster? I think it’s probably faster, but I don’t know because I’ve changed other things like the carburetor, etc. these burned down. I changed to another parts that seemed to be faster. But anyway… The high rpm range is now very smooth.
The Harley Sportster only turns smoothly up to about 5000 rpm. But my Sportster turns up to 7700 rpm according to the specs. Still, the RPMs are lower than those of domestic motorcycles. It turns up considerably more than other sportsters. I think what you got was that the engine turn up better.
But have you lost some things? What is lost is, as you said earlier, torque. The Harley-like ride is gone. I think there are a lot of people who would argue with me if I mention the Harley-ness of the Sportster in the first place. No, it’s not! There is nothing Harley-ness about the Sportster!
A characteristic the big twin has, what can I say, like a triple beat sound. That feeling of the flywheel spinning powerfully even when it seems to stop almost. The Sportster doesn’t have that kind of weight to begin with, but it became even lighter from there.
I don’t have a strong commitment in the three-beat sound. But… For better or worse,it became like a Japanese bike. What can I say? but rather than I originally liked to accelerate slowly like this. So I have a habit of running in higher gears than necessary. Then, This would give me a Harley-like feeling.
But it’s not good for the engine. So I try not to do this as much as possible these days. But I often find myself riding at about 60 km/h in 5th gear. so I’m being careful. Because I don’t want to break it. I guess this is what I lost… cool is cool!
Whether it is a current model or a vintage model What is cool to you? What is only there I like bikes that you can tell whose bike it is at a glance, even when many bikes are parked at an event site. I think those unique bikes are cool. In that sense,
Popular models like shovelheads are at a disadvantage. chopper style, bobber style, and cafe style Shovelheads have already been done up. I think it’s a lot of work to make a unique bike with a shovelhead, but I still like unique bikes. At first glance,
It is easy to tell whose bike it is. And all four of today’s bikers are immediately recognizable. It is easily recognizable from a distance. I saw Masaru lost on his own earlier from a distance and recognized him immediately. I ride BMW R80. I ride a Yamaha XS650. I ride a Honda CB400Four.
I’ll take a picture! wait! wait! Is it okay that the background is a toilet? Well, okay! For those who are going to ride motorcycles. It doesn’t matter what model or displacement of the bike is used, much less whether it was built by a famous builder. For example,
There is a guy in Saitama who is riding a really cool customized Yamaha Virago 250. I was so impressed with the bike that I went to Saitama to see him. I think originality is important. A bike that expresses the person. It sounds a little disgusting, but I like a bike
That will always be referred to as that person’s bike, even if that person gives it away and gives it to someone else. Wouldn’t it be super cool if I made an unpopular car famous? It doesn’t matter what model of motorcycle you want to ride, as long as
You imagine what you want it to look like. I think you will get a highly satisfactory bike. The only bike I talked about earlier that is a cafe style version of the Virago 250 is the only one You won’t find it anywhere else. Not a popular bike like Harley, though.
But it gets lots of attention. No matter where he puts it, it is immediately recognizable as his bike. It is fun to build such a bike. I think it is important to meet a motorcycle shop that is accommodating to this.
