Through the basics of the exam showing you the the key parts of the reading and use of English exam um and pointing out any very important pieces of information you need to know so thank you for joining us uh I look forward to helping you um and so let’s uh
Begin with a little introduction about me okay and uh have a listen to some of the language I use as well this could be useful for you guys too so I will share my screen okay a quick message before we begin happy New Year all
The best to everybody so now uh my my introduction okay so firstly uh a little about me um I love sport um I really enjoy surfing as you can see from the picture there uh I’m interested in languages and culture um I’m really into learning
Languages but I enjoy teaching them too uh I’m a language student I’ve studied Spanish French German Portuguese that doesn’t mean that I’m fantastic at them but I understand what it’s like to be a student so I’ve been in your position um but also I’m a teacher as well um and I have a
Background in teaching Cambridge exams okay in fact I studied languages at University um and then uh I majored in education later uh as I said I’m experienced at teaching Cambridge um Cambridge material um I also a pet preliminary examiner uh amongst other uh other types of exams um what I
Am best at is teaching exam preparation okay I actually enjoy it some people think that’s a bit crazy but I love teaching exam preparation so hopefully I can help you now before we look at the
Exam a quick little uh reflection okay you will see that I have used a range of language here to talk about my interests these are some nice little phrases um you know I am interested in okay I’ve
Used the ing form afterwards because we have a preposition I’m mad about I’m into okay um and then when I was talking about my background some nice phrases here if you’re talking about what you’ve done at in your education uh and then again some nice phrases with prepositions I’m
Experienced at I’m good at I have a background in so these are some nice little uh Expressions you can use in your speaking okay but that’s uh enough about the speaking okay I’m here to help
You with the reading and the use of English uh so um let’s begin okay um now let’s start with the basics what you see when you begin the exam all right you you will see okay the reading test we
Look at the time here you’ve got 45 minutes okay now let’s let’s quickly look at the instructions all right um this is not completely useless information um there are useful points here okay um so read the instruction carefully okay this is obvious try to answer all the questions you
Do not lose marks uh if you give a bad answer you just don’t get a mark so answer all the questions even if you don’t know what the answer is have a guess okay that’s important um try to answer all
The questions okay if you are wrong oops let’s get rid of that one okay we’ll get rid of that one if you’re wrong no problem okay you’re not going to get a minus Mark okay that happens in some
Countries uh and some systems some exam systems now write your answers on the answer sheet use a pencil okay you must complete the answer sheet within the time limit now um this is important and
Most people say simple um we can have a look at the answer sheet here this is the answer sheet um and you need to make sure that you’ve completed your answers on the answer sheet so you can see
Here I’ve got an imaginary pencil and I’m shading in the answer for part one I think part one is one okay excuse me so you need to shade them in now my recommendation okay to save stress and nobody
Likes stress in an exam uh is try to do this while you’re doing the exam okay let’s let’s have a look at part one for example okay we’ve got part one here we’ve got question one okay there are five
Questions in part one it says for each question choose the correct answer now let’s imagine that I’ve read it you know as I said I think it’s part one I’m going to mark it on the sheet here
Okay but at the same time okay okay I’m going to use my pencil okay and Mark it here yeah then at the end I’m not stressed I’m not thinking oh I have to mark everything uh at the end do I
Have time okay that’s not a good situation to be in okay so this may be common sense okay but uh some people have forgotten yeah and I have seen it and it’s not nice okay so uh I did forget to
Mention the beginning of the exam where you have to enter your details okay your name uh you will be given a center name Don’t Panic about that uh your signature make sure you have all of this
Stuff completed okay otherwise this can delay the marking of your exam okay so that’s uh simple but again important now um let’s look at the parts of the exam so I will I will show you I will
Show you the entire exam I’ve got a sample here okay um I can’t draw on this let’s see now we’ve seen this part now this this is part one okay as I said there are five questions um
You’ve got like an image with text and you have to choose the correct answer from three options a b or c yeah all right five different examples yeah that’s part one so let’s look at one of the
Questions in a little more detail so let me share that again go back to my white there we go now here I what part one now I’m going to rub this out because we do not know yet if a
Is the right answer that was just for showing you okay what to do so let’s start from the beginning okay so let me get my highlighter let’s change color let’s go for blue okay right uh for
Each question choose the correct answer now okay okay I’ve got some tips here um look carefully at the language look for similarities in meaning and ideas okay synonyms it’s another word for similarities Words which are the same beware of negatives and distractors okay we can talk we’ll
Talk in more detail about this uh this part of the exam when I go into detail about part one uh of the exam so uh if you like this session subscribe okay and then you can follow me when I
Get into into the real detail for part one today we’re going to look at the basics and I’ll give you a a very useful tip at the end so stay stay on the channel okay at the end and you’ll get
That tip that will help you uh do the exam with less stress and in a more let’s say methodical or strategic way okay so let’s get back back to the question um as I said look very carefully at
The language all right so we’ve got this negative no groups of four or more okay unless by previous Arrangements all right so let’s have a look at uh a b and c okay all campus must reserve a place in
Advance okay okay so uh we’ve got the sense that we’ve got our in advance is similar to a previous Arrangement Okay so we’ve got a similar idea here yeah let’s uh let’s check the others and see if there are any things that we can that we can eliminate them maybe or discount them
Okay uh so let’s have a look go back to Yellow groups bigger than four are not allowed on the site okay well we’ve got this idea of four okay um but it says no groups of four or more are allowed
Unless by previous arrangements so that’s not really right okay they can come but there must be previous Arrangements right uh now let’s have a look at the next one groups of more than three should contact the campsite before arriving okay now we’ve got this idea of more than three which
Is the same yeah as four all right uh they should contact the camsite before arriving right okay uh so we’ve got we’ve got both ideas included here whereas for a we’ve only got one idea all campers
Now here it says only groups of four so let’s eliminate a okay and we have got c as our answer okay look carefully at the language similarities in meaning and ideas beware of negatives eliminate anything that you think is not correct okay so that’s part one all right let’s move on part two
Um now ah we’ve done part one we’ve decided it’s C so at the same time okay we are going to shade in Sea okay to make our life easier and avoid stress okay so let’s do that while we’re doing the exam
Okay yeah now we can move on yes I nearly forgot myself right part two so again I will look at um the PDF so that you can see the entire uh part of the exam so let’s move across now I scroll
Down okay so uh part two okay for each question choose the correct answer okay you have context here which is very important so take time take your time to read this the young people below all want to do a cycling course during their school holidays on the opposite page there are
Descriptions of eight cycling courses so these are the young people below okay we’ve got uh five young people and then on the opposite page we’ve got eight different descriptions all right so we have to choose five out of the eight um so as it said decide which course would be the most
Suitable for the people below okay so that’s the question now let’s let’s have a quick look at how to answer this question shall we um so again I will unshare and share my lesson here okay
My presentation I mean move across okay so we’re going to look at the first one okay we’re going to look at question six we’ got Nancy okay so um you again you need to look care at the language look
For connections and similarities this is something that you’re going to be doing for every question okay in the reading you’re looking for connections similarities look for synonyms and be careful of negatives uh and distractors which I will go into more detail about uh as I said in our next session
About part one of the pet preliminary exam so um I am going to just show you the answer to this one and you can see the connections I’ve made so let’s have a look okay uh six goes with d all right and
Let’s have a look why okay now Nancy she’s 14 she Cycles quite well all right in fact we’ve got two ideas there so maybe I can uh I’m going to color code these okay color coding is is good for
An exam nerds like me okay so she Cycles quite well um she needs to learn how to cycle safely uh on busy City roads from home to school I think that’s one idea more or less yeah okay and uh the
Last idea she’s free at the weekends okay you can have a look for a minute um and see why I have made the connection what are the ideas that connect okay you’re welcome to write in the chat
If you want to um or not up to you I will go over it in in a minute okay so I’ll give you a quick minute to read the pedal power okay and see how the connections are what what are the
What is the language that connects and makes sure that this is the correct answer okay just take a look all right maybe you have some IDE so let’s uh let’s take a look together uh a course for able cyclists all right able kind of works with quite well yeah so we got that
Idea we tick that off okay um we specialize in teaching Riders of all ages right so that works with the fact that she’s 14 all ages can participate uh now um how to manage difficult situations in heavy traffic towns and cities okay that works with that idea the busy roads
Uh home to school and uh she’s only free at weekends the final idea there Saturdays 2 to 4 yeah so we’ve got all our ideas there there’s nothing um that does not agree there’s nothing that does not uh that don’t go together so I’m we’re 100% sure 100% sure
That that’s the correct answer okay and I’ve drawn all over my um my exam sheet yeah okay part three of our pet elimin preliminary exam sorry we’re not eliminating okay it’s a preliminary exam uh okay again I’m going to do what I’ve been doing I’ll go to the I’ll
Show you the PDF so an unshare and share of the PDF we can see the entire part three so we move on okay to part three uh so you’ve got 11 to 15 questions 11 to 15 for each question choose the
Correct answer you’ve got a reading text here okay one page and then you’ve got your uh five question questions A B C or D all right yeah uh okay so let’s let’s go back unshare and share okay okay what’s nice about this and not confusing is
That the answers come in order let’s put that there okay that’s useful to know well if we want a fancy word they come chronologically okay make that a bit bigger okay uh that means that um the answer to question question 11 is
Going to be in the beginning all right uh now again to repeat myself but the strategies are similar for every question look carefully at the language in the questions um and then read the text and look for similarities in meanings and ideas I would say read the questions first
I like to do that okay um and then read the text okay questions first text second some people like to read the text quickly first that’s fine um for me I like to read the questions then I know what I
Am looking for but that’s that’s my personal preference so um let’s Zoom this a bit okay because it’s a bit small so now um as I said uh we want to look at the language so Harry thinks
Uh he said he was going to be a tennis champion in order to okay pleas his parents that’s a bit thick isn’t it let let me um maybe I’ll use a thinner pen here let’s see that’s better yeah pleas his parents okay uh change color get some attention Okay annoy his older brother
Okay uh and the last one uh what color am I missing yellow yeah persuade people that he was serious right I’ll scroll up we are looking here for synonyms in the text which match in other
Words similarities in meaning and ideas yeah so I’ll read this for you see if you can spot them as I read okay and then we’ll go over it right our title play to win 16-year-old Harry Moore writes about his hobby tennis my parents have always loved tennis and they’re members of a
Tennis club my older brother was really good at it and they supported him taking him to lessons all the time so I guess when I announced that I wanted to be a tennis champion okay our answer is
Coming when I grew up I just intended for them to notice me all right my mother laughed she knew I couldn’t possibly be serious okay be careful of that we have the same word but we’ve got a negative okay beware of negatives and distractors just because they use the same
Word it does not mean it’s the same thing she knew that I couldn’t be serious okay in fact that makes D impossible yeah however we do have this sense I just intend intended for them
To notice me all right that is another way to say uh in fact let me change the color to not confuse the issue okay we don’t want green as such and we don’t want yeah let’s let’s change again so
To notice me so that is another way to say to get some attention yeah okay notice be noticed uh if people notice you they pay you attention all right and uh I should add that this idea
Serious yeah so let’s let’s zoom out let’s go to fit here okay so in this case we’ve got two words which are similar okay we can make that match yeah we’ll put that on a little Post-It note okay uh be noticed sorry it’s right it here be noticed be paid attention to
Okay there we go right let’s move on okay uh let’s take a look at part four and again I will ah at this point I should just remind you again I’m going to repeat myself I apologize but we must remember as we’re
Doing this to Mark our answers in while we’re doing the exam again to save that stress uh at the ends yeah okay so what did I say I think I said part three let’s let’s go back and have a look
Okay part three and we said it was uh get some attention it was B wasn’t it okay so we’ll shade that in okay part three B okay and we also should have done part two which was D wasn’t it yeah okay
So we’ll do that yeah 6D all right that’s the last time I’m I’m going to mention that I promise yeah okay just to give you a little reminder okay repetition is good um where were we so we were
Going to look at part four where we yeah all right so but unshare and share yeah we’ll go PDF okay we’ll scroll down okay so part four questions 16 to 20 you’ve got uh five sentences have been removed in other words taken away from the text below for each question choose the correct
Answer there are three extra sentences which you do not need to use uh so this is a reading uh and you can see you’ve got a gap here where a sentence should go in these are the sentences you
Get on the next page and of course you’ve got to choose five from the eights okay so let’s let’s go back uh we’ll go back to my my Bo now for me this one is one of the trickier parts of the
Exam one of the more difficult parts of the exam um so this will take me a good 45 minutes to really go into detail with it which we will be looking at in the subsequent lessons I’ll give you um some ideas about how to approach it but uh we’ll really go into
Detail with this in the lat later lessons um but let let’s take a quick look yeah um so I’m going to zoom make it a bit bigger here I would say for this um for this part it’s really
Worth reading uh the text first and then looking at the questions okay and you’re looking for connections all right uh you’re looking four ideas which connect before and after the Gap all right uh did I say that I think I did yeah it’s here yeah let’s bring it down here right
So I’ll give you an example now we’ve read all of it it’s about planting trees Mark Ram okay uh now let’s have a look at some things which might connect okay uh we started looking online
For the best trees to buy all right we’ve got uh we’ve got a bit of vocab here we we’re talking about trees okay we’re talking about looking online all right let let’s use something a bit smaller here actually okay yeah change your pen up a bit why not yeah all right looking
On what am I talking about right hold on that should be a bit smaller looking online yeah trees okay now we can look afterwards okay uh if we wanted them to grow properly they had to be the right type all right we got them as well which is referring to something plural all
Right so in our sentence we have to have something plural here okay we and we talked about trees we’ve talked about buying online Okay so let’s let’s maybe zoom out a little
Bit okay we make it that’s a bit small isn’t it so let’s see okay um so if we look you know a b CDE e f we’ve got the eight Alternatives okay um now I I’ve chosen D for this one okay um we’re
Talking about choosing trees okay looking online that’s the idea they’re looking um it was quite complicated okay so they have to be the right one we’ve got that idea we’ve got two ideas which connect together and of course we’ve got them which refers to trees as well
All right so there are many different ways uh for to to make that connection okay and we’ll spend a considerable amount of time looking at the various different ways um that we can make that connection and make sure we’ve got the right sentence to go in the Gap but that’s how
You do that part of the exam okay and again you can see I’ve drawn all over my text um and we need to mark it on our exam paper okay if we’re sure good so uh let’s move on shall
We okay where is my part five my part five is gone all right so I need to look at the exam paper but that’s fine so we’ll look at part five I don’t have it on my screen so I’ll
Draw it up on the PDF that’s no problem um bear with me a moment so let’s pull it up on the F okay now there we go there we go part five yeah you I’m going to make a screenshot I think and then I can put it on
The just bear with me a moment people please okay I’m going to make my life a bit easier okay so that’s so part five okay uh there are five questions okay the same um and in this case for each question you need to choose the correct answer okay so you’ve got you
Got a text you’ve got gaps okay and we look at the questions you got a B C or D okay so let’s let’s have a look okay I think I can now put it on my presentation we can draw all of okay there we go right
Now there we go let’s put it in there like that [Music] okay oh just bear with me one moment guys okay so I want here okay one moment guys I’ll call up the the image in a moment two now let’s get that in here there we go perfect okay thank you for your
Patience now let’s look how we can do this part of the exam okay so we we’re looking for something to go in here okay again um it’s a case of looking at the before and after
Okay not this not 22 I want 21 don’t I we’ll do 21 first okay so right so we’ve got a project okay uh it’s something to show how car marking could bloody bloody blur okay um now you’ve got intended wished decided or insisted okay it’s important to think about uh
Context and grammar here all right these are the two key things uh context and r okay two key things to think about now let’s save that I want to move that there okay context so what do I mean firstly by context we’re talking about a project okay it’s not a person
It’s a project okay uh it’s about car making um and we’ve and so that gives us our cont text then we’ve got uh we got the use of two here as well which which is related to grammar really yeah okay
We’re using two here all right so um let’s have a look at our words we’ve got intended to show how car making could such and such okay decided Well a project isn’t decided to do something so that
That wouldn’t really be correct okay insisted now insisted goes with on he insisted on working hard so we can eliminate that all right um we got that grammar there on okay wrong preposition we can use
Intended to okay we can say wish to but that’s when you use a person and it’s active I wish to leave now okay um he wished to make money all right but a project is not wished to do something
All right so that would also be incorrect all right so we can eliminate that yeah um so you’re looking for a a link with context and grammar for this part all right so that’s part five uh thank
You for your patience there and you would remember again to go back to the exam and Mark mark it oh sorry back to the answer sheet and Mark it with your pencil uh so let’s come to uh let’s yeah part
Six I’ve got it there okay uh so again we’ll have a quick look at the PDF uh so I’ll move across uh and we can scroll down all right to part six um so five questions again all right for each question write the correct answer write one word for
Each Gap one word no more all right uh now you’ve got a text and you got gaps and you’ve got to write the word it can be any word yeah uh so let’s let’s go back and
We’ll share here and I will share my present ation all right so okay last one last part of the exam uh it can be quite tricky now here is something to remember um the correct word is a grammar word
In fact make this point clearly a grammar word right what do I mean by a grammar word every time you are in class and your teacher is teaching you a grammar Point um maybe you’re doing the future you’re doing conditionals uh comparatives and you’re using words conditionals we use if to
Make a conditional if is a grammar word okay superlatives we use most or least the most fantastic the least interesting most and least are grammar words the is a grammar word okay um future we use will for the future for predictions will is a grammar word okay it’s it makes up a grammatical
Structure that has its own meaning all right now Richard is not a grammar word my name that’s a name all right surfing is not a grammar word all right it’s the name of an activity so it’s a word
That is used to make up a grammatical structure that’s important to remember all right um so my point made okay let’s uh hopefully my point is made so let’s let’s go back quickly and we’ll
Do one example answer uh right so I would say for this one read read the entire text okay the usual look carefully at the language before and after I’m repeating myself again but this is important um and look for connections related to context vocab and grammar okay so we’ll do the first one
Uh our new skate pop is there a Great Skate Park in your town we’ve now got the Fantastic skate park ever okay well um if if you know your grammar okay we tend to use the plus ever um with a superlative okay fact it’s the plus superlative plus ever
Okay all right now we’ve got our adjective here fantastic all right um it’s all because of my friends and me we’ve got the word great so it’s going to be positive all right so our superlatives
The most fantastic not the least because it’s a great skat Park all right so we thought about our grammar we’ve got our one grammar word which is the most all right so I’ll put that in there we go
Okay uh I see a message from Louis 21 I’m not sure what you mean by 21 is that the question uh yes it’s the question of the answer sorry I missed that I need to pay more attention to
The to the chat now um that brings us close to the end of the entire exam okay to summarize for this pet preliminary exam reading use of English um come prepared bring your pencil bring your rubber okay to do the to write in the answers um write the answers as you go in
The exam follow the strategies we’ll talk in more detail about those later on okay if you subscribe to the channel okay then we can get into detail with the later sessions now I said
At the beginning that I would give you a tip maybe you figured it out maybe you haven’t the tip was not just shading in the exam but if we look at um an example one of my example answers all right uh
You can see it’s a bit of a mess I’ve drawn all over it okay I’ve labeled things I’ve underlined things I’ve made my own little notes okay uh and that for me and for many students I’ve
Worked with helps them establish the correct answer and be 100% sure so my tip is this is to draw sorry I go back my tip is to draw all over the exam paper okay to help you establish
The correct answer yeah let’s put that on a little Post-It note that’s my tip of the day it may be obvious to some people but it may not and it is very helpful so uh draw all over the exam
Paper help you logically establish what the answer is okay that is my little tip of the day okay um so that brings us quite nicely okay to the end of the session we’ll jump that okay I say thank you everybody it’s been a pleasure helping you hopefully uh
I look forward to seeing you next week in the next session remember subscribe to the channel okay um and you can keep uh getting these hopefully useful sessions so see you soon guys uh I will just see yeah see you soon guys okay um in the next session all the best byebye
