What keeps tourists out of Japan's rural areas:
– insufficient English signage and problems communicating with local people
– insufficient accommodation in a variety of price bands and types
– insufficient transport such as irregular trains/buses which do not work with tight itineraries
– the need to hire a car and drive in Japan due to lack of train/bus access
– squat toilets (Westerners fear these and are told they are more common in rural areas)
– possible negative attitudes towards visitors by some rural people
– insufficient access to electronic payment/a cash-only culture (this is a concern throughout Japan for tourists, but away from the big cities, this concern increases)
– inconsistent access to Wi-Fi/internet (anywhere with mountains will have this)
What measures have these areas and the Government taken to deal with these concerns? As the saying goes: 'you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink'.
you are the info………
Great suggestions to visit
My upcoming group tour to Japan does include Matsumoto and Takayama though.
Very good suggestions, I would really like to visit Tottori, by the way "Mt". you should read it as mountain or mount
Most of the recent travelers are of the young age group and first timers. They prefer the usual. They don't want to get out of the comfort zone of traveling like doing research, getting lost. They go where the majority go.
Going to the rural areas is fulfilling but requires hard work. Since train and bus schedules are limited, having a well-planned itinerary is a must. Unless you join a tour which is quite expensive and of limited time to spend on each places.
I would also love to explore other regions but considering the bulk of international flights land at Tokyo, it really is the gateway to Japan, that is why most tourists cluster around there. As other comments have pointed out, improved connectivity, information, more English signage etc would definitely ease access. Great channel btw, learning tons for my upcoming trip! Maybe for your next video you can do "30 survival Japanese phrases/words everyone should know" since English proficiency is still limited in many areas 😅
