【九州ライド Stage 6】日本三大秘境・椎葉村へ ― 鹿児島を後回しにした理由|Into Shiiba, One of Japan’s Three Great Hidden Regions

「Westward Bound — Tour de Kyushu」Stage 6。

A 1,300 km cycling journey from Yokohama to Kyushu and Tanegashima.

Westward Bound — Tour de Kyushu Stage 6.

With less than 200 km remaining to Kagoshima, the logical choice would have been to continue south.

Instead, a change in the weather forecast led me in a completely different direction.

I turned inland toward Shiiba Village, one of Japan’s legendary hidden regions, deep in the Kyushu Mountains.

Leaving the coast behind, the route climbs into remote mountain country filled with steep roads, summer heat, and unpredictable weather.

Along the way, I ride toward the mountain villages made famous by folklorist Kunio Yanagita.

Why ride away from the finish line when the goal is finally within reach?

Because sometimes the most memorable places lie far beyond the shortest route.

This is the story of a detour into one of the most remote corners of Japan.
