A normal day, lost in the life of Kyoto. 大好きな京都を見つけた。
(English Subtitles by KemushiChan) There you are. There you are, guys! Let me tell you, it feels good to be back! It’s great to be back in Kyoto! Japan has been full-blown, reopened for a little over a year now It has been pop-pop-POPping off!
Today I am in a special place I want to share with you: KAMEOKA For those of you who just took the JLPT a few days ago you know it is some “turtle” deep goodness! We are ENSHELLED in beauty. ENSHELLED in mountains! Today we are NOT doing the overcrowded you already know.
No ones interested in that anymore so I’m getting a little bit of help today we’re going more deep into Kyoto. We’re going on an adventure…and you’re coming with me! But first I need to go met my guide. Today I am dropping in on the local shops of Kyoto to ask if Japan is ready for the unhuddled masses. Do they really want us here? “English is pretty standard now…” “Only Japanese for me.” “Sorry! It’s no joke.” “I have no idea what they’re saying.”
“I even found a Japanese garden in the states” “to showcase Japanese bamboo.” Is there really a better way to see Japan? The hot button word this year is “sustainable” so let’s see what that means here in Kameoka, the city next to Arashiyama. I’ve never seen reserved seats that look like this this is so retro! You didn’t tell me the seats look like this. Wow! Long tunnel up ahead! We made it. Welcome to Kameoka! It is a VIBE down there! Look at all this great big nature! Are those some FRESH sweet potatoes?!
I’ve got to get some of that! ♪~yakiimo~♪ If all goes well, you’ll get to pick your own vegetables today! I’m putting it on the docket. A goal: I want to eat sweet potatoes. We’re eating a sweet potato today! We are ready to go. It is BRIGHT out here! Bright shining and sunny!
I’m trusting you. You’re my guide on this trip. Deep Experience Guide (Juraj): Oh no, pressure! That means like… they did the JLPT Japanese test a few days ago you totally passed JLPT N1 million right? Correct. I didn’t even need to take it. They took one look at me and I passed.
Granted it just like that. Amazing. Slow down! Wait for me! So what do we have here? This is the small little bridge in Kameoka Specially designed for floods. It has no railing which is unnerving. As a bonus, you get to see the Hozugawa Kudari boat just right below the bridge!
Watch your head!!!! Look, who’s idea was that?! Engineering! Urban planning at its best! ( KAIHOUKAN !!! ) The great outdoors! I love this big nature. HELLO!!! I have a question for you, Loretta. Yeah? How would you translate “kaihoukan” in English? Wide open space! A sense of freedom!
Kameoka in history was the last resort that protected the western entrance to Kyoto. But being home to so many delicious farms its also nicknamed the “breadbasket of Kyoto”. For lunch we’ll pop into a cafe that’s taking sustainable beyond bread and baskets and into something that looks a little more like a bag.
[ THE SEAMSTRESS ] So let me explain the HOZUBAG concept. We make bags out of paraglider fabric. There’s a rule in paragliding that you have to replace the fabric regularly These are all used here. These would just be thrown away typically so we take the fabric here at the studio
And turn them into handbags. We had some really flashy designs before but paraglider trends have changed with time. So pick a color and let’s get to designing! You get to make your own bag with you’re preferred fabric design. Any you like, from those available! Nice! Do the viewers know about conbini bags?
For those of you griping about how much plastic is used in Japan Not here, here are some conbini sized bags to use and in Kameoka theres a…paper bag movement? Yes! They stopped using plastic bags in the convenience stores the ubiquitous plastic bags! Tell us how you REALLY feel!
Paper is the way to go! Paper and hozubag. Amazing. Show me the way, sensei. OK, let’s do this. Look this one’s all white. Oo… a fave… Kinda cool, right? This design is straight up from the paraglider OH, this one!! That was fast. Yep, that mark is as is, from the paraglider.
Yeah, we want this mark to stand out. Right in the middle. Japanese practice alert!!! For everyone who just took the JLPT, can you read that? “Select the correct kanji reading below…!” What is that from?! The JLPT test. Wow is that how it goes?! 0 out of 10. Do not recommend.
A lot of hobbyists usually try this workshop. When foreign people come here do you ever worry about English or how to communicate? Oh yes! I only speak Japanese so it really helps if you come with a guide. Keeps it easy. One specific question from a viewer (thanks to Lady_of_the_bed on Discord!)
So Japan’s been open for about a year now how are things here in Kyoto? In Kameoka? Do things seem different? Many tourists ride the torokko train or river boat some are also really into the hozubags. Oh really? Non-Japanese people seem to really like it. Why is that?
I can tell they care more about upcycling. I want more tourists to know about the area The torokko and riverboat end at the station so they don’t really get to explore more. There is so much to see in Kameoka so I want people to step out a little further. I recommend cycling!
The bike’s great, and there’s a guide. Thank you! Our illustrious guide. We’ll enjoy a nice meal while we wait for the finishing touches. I heard the food is amazing. Can’t wait to try! We use organic veggies from Kameoka farmers. Vegetable curry with local, organic goodies.
My mom told me to always share a bite with you viewers. The first bite is yours! It’s like a homecoming of spice. Yum. Very earthy!!! The final product! The mark is a nice touch. Thank you. Your final touches really make it pro. [ THE FARMER ] So this is a farm
But I think of it as an amusement farm. It’s a place to play while enjoying farming. This whole area was all bush but we cleared it all. Did you make that? All handmade! The jungle gym, too. I looked up how to do it online. Really? Like on YouTube? Er, yeah… YouTube, I guess.
That swing, for example. See we even made flooring here. A floor. This bamboo house is always a hit. This new one will be a bamboo house. In Kyoto you may look up and wonder, what to do with all that bamboo? We have so much bamboo in the grove
So we decided to turn this resource into something Kyoto City University of the Arts and professors from Kyoto University came We made this together We sat here and enjoyed the view over tea and coffee. This is this year’s progress next year we’ll start the walls and roof.
Wow! I’ll tell ya’ it’s great out here! No highways out here, no car gas emissions no factories! No big power lines, ya’ know. It’s just great, big nature. People come here and it’s pure freedom. Do people come from abroad, too? Yeah, we just string words together
But some of my staff speak English So English isn’t really a problem What about you? I uh… hehe… I uh… I just kind of gesture. My pride is our organic farming. (Question from JAY on discord!) We grow rice without pesticides. This year our rice received recognition
For school lunches in Kameoka. You have to have top class quality to get that. We got that. Top class rice. What are easy veggies to plant? Like potatoes and such. We plant a little of everything so people can experience farming. Both hands slowly. Pull straight up. Girl poweeerrrr!!! SUsSsTainAbLLE ~♪!
Amazing! Great job. There you go. Dinner is served! [ THE WOODSMAN ] Ahh man, it’s cold! Let’s warm things up! So I’m going to have you make some chopsticks but first a rundown on bamboo. So, the basics. What IS bamboo?
Bamboo is an extremely fast growing, natural resource here in Kyoto. For dinner I asked the 3rd generation owner of Nagaoka Meichiku to explain how his bamboo solutions are changing Kyoto and the world. Bamboo grows ridiculously fast. So people are starting to look at it as a sustainable resource.
For all the petroleum products, plastics etc are there ways we can use bamboo instead? That’s the big question. This is a Japanese garden over in the states. I went there and shared some demonstrations so more people can hear about Japan and bamboo Where was this? Missouri Botanical Garden
Hmm… Next time you have to come to Virginia! Where? Where is it? Virginia. Its a state on the east coast. There’s a Japanese garden there, too. What’s the name? It’s in Richmond but I forgot the name. I’m off to Florida, next year! Nice! East Coast!
Let’s make some plateware for the BBQ! I’m a little nervous… You did it. You cut it! Nice… Thank you. Ooo, danger. Now to split it open! Here you go, a plate! You got it! What do you think? Very good! Thank you so much! Enjoy the feast!
Wow! It’s really going! Wow! Excuse me, young lad. What’s that you’ve brought into the world? Hopefully a baked sweet potato! It maybe liquified potato at this point… Ta-daaa! Sweet potato! This one’s mine! It’s still really hot, but here’s sweet potato! We did it! We got sweet potatoes! Cheers!
Fun fact: we have some beef as well This is Kameoka-gyu, Kameoka beef. Oo, you can’t even see me. Apparently this beef just won an award It’s the number 1 beef in the Kinki region which includes Kobe beef and other brands you know. I see why it is number one.
I forgot to share a bite with you…sorry! I am eating with chopsticks I made! Insanity! Good morning, bright and early! We’re back! I was told there’s a good view at the top of the mountains. Maybe even a surprise… Kameoka is a big basin shape So supposedly If I turn around right now…
There should be something beautiful behind me. Should we take a peek? Let’s go a little higher! I know what to do! It is a bright and CRISP morning! Welcome to Senjuji the home of magnificent views. Look at the leaves! That’s beautiful! Let’s check out this view in 3…2…1…. Ohhh-!!!
Look at this VIEW. Look at these views! The back of this gate is kind of like a photo frame a perfectly framed moment of beauty! But there is still more… We made it to the top! Look, the top of the temple is here.
I can’t believe I came ALL the way up the stairs and brought all y’all in this lens. Welcome to the beauty of Kameoka! Enshelled in mountains and beautiful naturescapes. Breathe it all in! OK, I have a special view just for you. We’re back. I hope you enjoyed this trip.
About the torokko, the train I took at the beginning you can use that to get to Kameoka easily so I hope you’ll stop off maybe grab a bike and bike around the tour I did is on the Deep Experience website so check it out if you want to do what I did.
This is the Japan we were promised! I hope you get to enjoy it for yourself soon. Let me know what you want to do in a comment below. Thanks for watching, please like and subscribe for more!

to be honest, the only people I've heard complaining about "overtourism" were other non-japanese people because "their spots are getting polluted with foreigners". Japan is a big and beautiful country, as long as you're not a nuisance to public order, i'm pretty sure japanese people will welcome you with open arms
What a wonderful trip. I feel so much better. Thank you!
VIRGINIA REPRESENT 🗣️ RVA RVA RVA MAYMONT PARK YUUUHHHH💃🏽
Fantastic video.
The only Japanese garden I can think of in Richmond is Maymont park maybe?
The picture frame view was awesome. Thanks for tossing us some luck. Kameoka would have to kick me out of town for never wanting to leave, ever. They would need a break😁.
It's interesting how the farmer had to be certified as producing the highest quality rice to be able to supply school lunches. Meanwhile here in the UK school lunches mainly consist of the cheapest ultra-processed crap that they can get away with.
Kameoka is a great place! I visited there I guess nearly four years ago now. Would love to go back.
Aaaaa welcome back!! Watching this over lunch and taking notes on things to do in Kameoka. I'm planning to visit Kansai in the fall, and the Sagano Romantic Train is on my itinerary, so how can I possibly pass up Kameoka after seeing this? Thanks for taking us along. Also YAAAY I got so excited when you mentioned Richmond 💖 I hope the bamboo craftsman can visit Maymont some day. We just had a big bamboo die-off, but it still grows everywhere, so we could use the help of an expert to figure out creative ways to use it up 😂
I can go and get lost there 🚴
Sundai Love had traveled near to this location but not as far as you have in exploring the area. 😀
Are you hiding your singing voice? 🎼 🎼
Wonderful
Jealous? Me??… YES!!!
良いお年を
Welcome back!! Looking forward to more of your videos in 2024!!
Welcome back!! I always enjoy watching your videos ❤
Too much tourist in kyoto it's actually why i choose not to go
15:48 the name on the side of the lathe caught my eye. My daughter will be traveling to Nagaoka with our local Sister Cities exchange program next year. I had to double check the description to see where you were, so I could tell me daughter to ask if her group might be able to visit, but Kameoka is 6 hours south of where this was made(?).
do the bamboo cups and platewear have to be sealed or are they naturally soakproof? maybe that's not the right word? but do they get treated afterwards to make them easy to clean?
❤️❤️❤️
Yay!! We missed you! 🙂
Thank you for sharing Loretta!! I wonder when The Woodsman is visiting Florida! He's probably going to the Morikami Gardens located in Delray Beach! I would love to visit the garden when he's there and see a demonstration in person!
テント地のエコバッグは
おしゃれで丈夫だよね( ^∀^)
Next on my list…Kameoka lol thanks
It's nice to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city!
Amazing video, I really enjoyed this. I hope to see more videos like this in the future. Happy Holidays!
Christmas came early this year 🎉
❤❤ I'm so happy I got to watch this! Such a beautiful experience snd it was so nice to get that view at the end 🎉🎉 Thank you for sharing!!
Now this is the kind of Japan I want to visit! I have not had the chance to travel yet in my life but Japan has always been on my #1 travel bucket list. I'm from an island so i have a feeling i'm gonna get dizzy and clusterphobic from the very populated areas like Tokyo and Kyoto. Kameoka looks like my cup of tea.
Thank you so much for the tour! It all looks so much fun to do. I recently read a magazine on trains in Japan and seeing that train made me so excited. I hope to ride it and do everything on that tour someday! ❤
What a fun adventure with our smart and adorable multicultural mom!
Welcome back, and (now) Merry Christmas
Welcome back stranger, long time no see. I visited Kyoto back in 2004/05 when I was a Exchange student. When I return to visit Japan I want to visit Tokyo because I never been and visit the Tohoku region of Japan because it's the least visited by foreigners.
This was stunning, Loretta! So peaceful but not far from the madding crowd.
As soon as that bamboo guy said he went to a Japanese garden in the US, I was like, "Missouri Botanical Garden?? …no, don't be silly, it's never Missouri…. omg it is Missouri!!"
They have a beautiful Japanese garden, and do a festival every Labor Day weekend, and it's always very hot, humid, and crowded… an authentic Japanese experience, haha.
Great video! I finally got to visit Japan again last month, and there were lots of tourists, but we still had a great time.
A place rich in nature. The Japanese father who explains it is amazing! ! This YouTube made me want to go to Kameoka in Kyoto.
@kemushichan Can we get the name of the song that plays at 20:12? It’s 🔥
What an amazing experience! What a charming place 💜
