037 (福島) 国道459号恋人峠から西会津町奥川大字飯里まで
福島県から新潟に向かう国道459号線です。福島から新潟へは、国道49号線が最も綺麗な幹線道路で、さらにその南側には東北横断自動車道が整備されているため、この道はもうほどんど誰も使わなくなりました。そのため車が少なく、カーブも楽しい道の一つです。快適に走っていられると思いきや急にきついカーブが来たり、見通しが悪かったりと油断は禁物です。この道の見所は「東北電力 豊実ダム」で、タイミングが合えば、大迫力の放水が見れることもあります。
This is National Route 459 heading from Fukushima Prefecture to Niigata. The most scenic main road from Fukushima to Niigata is National Route 49, and since the Tohoku Transverse Expressway runs further south, this route is now scarcely used by anyone. Consequently, it’s one of those roads with few cars and enjoyable curves. Just when you think you’re cruising comfortably, a sharp curve can suddenly appear, or visibility might be poor, so you can’t let your guard down. The highlight of this road is the “Tohoku Electric Power Toyomi Dam.” If you time it right, you might even catch the spectacular sight of water being released.
