Another Monday off so I could go for a long ride. I haven’t been down the west side of the Izu peninsula for probably +25 years.
Usually it’s been go down the east side and ride up the west side, well, long ago. Now, there are too many better roads than the super congested west side to even bother. But since it was a weekday, I thought it could be better. And yes, better than the weekends, but still plenty of cars.
Started on R134 through Kamakura and Enoshima, and Odawara. The rest of the way on R135. The first point of interest, Kawazu-Nanadaru Loop bridge 河津七滝ループ橋. This place is crazy. Only in Japan. The road comes out of the mountains above, but instead of making switchbacks along the side of the mountain, they made the road spiral three times to the bottom along the river.
Pretty cool, nonetheless.
Near the bridge are some falls. So I decided to go check them out too, since they were very close. Sho-Kei Daru 初景滝 , this was apparently the first set of falls here in a series of seven. I didn’t have time to up and check out the rest, but even the first one here was pretty cool.
Then it was continue on to Shimoda. My goal was 200km for the day, so I continued on past Shimoda to Minami-Izu. After I got enough distance (including the return to the station), I turned around and just went up the road I went down back to Shimoda.
I was originally aiming to catch the 15:30 train back, but after visiting a few places along the way, I realized that was going to be pretty tough. Even though the next train with the least transfers was an hour later, it proved worth it since I could visit quite few different places along the way.
All in all, another great day to be out!
