今回は熊本県水俣市にある湯の鶴温泉を訪れます。
温泉街では観光客の姿はほとんど見られず、シャッターが閉まった店や廃墟がところどころに残っています。
しかし、時が止まったようなレトロな雰囲気が漂い、どこか懐かしい風情のある温泉街です。

こんなに鄙びた宿なのに一流のおもてなし。玄関や窓からの風情も一流❤本当に心を込めてもてなしている宿の主人の意気込みに驚きました。海外の人が見たらたまらないでしょうね。海外に住む家の家族も連れて行ってあげたい。

Really love these Showa-era onsen inns; being able to enjoy yourself in natural hot spring bath in private sector. The meals provided seem delicious and the overall price is affordable. Your photography is superb.
Since Mercury (MeHg) is a stable element that does not decay and even its sediment does not decay, I'm deeply surprised that Minamata still has even four hot springs and fisheries. Supposedly, officials declared that the bay was mercury free in 1997, but can you even trust that? Even if you "clean" mercury from the water, there are still environmental factors that will retain it and gradually release it back into nature and animals and sea life.
I would be very interested to know what the ppm of mercury in its current residents is, considering that no amount of cleanup efforts (not that there was adequate ones) would fully erase the impact of what Chisso did. All out of greed and love of money. Imagine knowing that you are destroying the lives of children, leaving people permanently disabled for life, blind, unable to walk or talk, or killing them outright, but you want more money in your pockets so you attack the research that is trying to help people and stop the pollution. Chisso was pure evil in the most true sense of the word.

水俣市というとどうしても水俣病が真っ先に浮かぶ40代ですが、こんなノスタルジックな場所もあったんですね。昭和の頃は景気もよく、家族旅行、社員旅行などで各地の温泉地は大賑わいだったそうです。
鬼怒川温泉郷などもそうですが、廃墟化してかつての賑わいが無くなるのは寂しい限りです。

Watatabi, do you know how the inns and businesses for the hot spring towns like the one in this video continue to stay in business? are they subsidized by the government? it doesn't seem like the towns get much foot traffic, so it must be really difficult to continue operating ryokans, and other shops… thank you for the video!
