What’s a Japanese CYCLING event like?

Today we’re riding the Kitakyushu Cycling Day, one of Japan’s most unique and well organized cycling events. Formerly known as the Kitakyushu Cycling Festival, this one day ride starts and finishes on the man made island of Kitakyushu Airport and offers multiple course options for riders of all abilities.

We chose the longest course, a 110 km route featuring a stunning climb over Hokotate Pass, quiet countryside roads, and incredible fall scenery. Along the way, the event includes six local aid stations, each serving regional food specialties that make this ride feel like a rolling tour of northern Kyushu.

To make the day even bigger, we cycled from Fukuoka to Kitakyushu Airport the day before, adding an extra 110 km to the adventure. With amazing volunteers, a local pro team lead out, perfect autumn colours, and a beautifully designed course, this was easily one of the best cycling events in Japan and one of our favourite days on the bike.

If you’re interested in cycling in Japan, Kyushu bike routes, or meeting up with Japanese cyclists, this ride should be at the top of your list.
