ダートムーアへの玄関口の町までサイクリング!

Bovey Tracey is a small, historic market town in Devon, South West England, located on the south-eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park. It’s often nicknamed “The Gateway to the Moor” because it’s one of the closest towns to the wild, open moorland of Dartmoor.
Key facts and features
• Population: Around 7,700 (as of recent estimates).
• Location: About 10 miles south-west of Exeter, 8 miles north of Newton Abbot, and close to the A382 road. It sits where the River Bovey meets the smaller River Bovey Tracey (confusingly similar names!).
• Pronunciation: Locals say “Buvvy Tracy” (the “Bovey” rhymes with “lovey”).
History in brief
• Medieval origins: Granted a market charter in 1260, so it has been a trading centre for over 750 years.
• Wool & pottery: Historically important for wool (like much of Devon) and later for pottery – the Bovey Tracey Pottery produced distinctive art pottery in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, and some of the old kiln sites are still visible.
• Cromwell connection: In 1646, during the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian forces stayed in the town after the Battle of Bovey Heath (actually fought just outside the town).
What it’s like today
• Very picturesque: A classic small English town with a mix of granite and thatched cottages, independent shops, cafés, pubs, and a strong community feel.
• House of Marbles: One of the biggest visitor attractions – a working glass-blowing studio, marble museum, huge marble runs, and a large gift shop/restaurant. Popular with families.
• Devon Guild of Craftsmen: Based at Riverside Mill, it’s one of the UK’s leading craft centres with galleries and exhibitions.
• Parks and riverside walks: The River Bovey runs right through town, with pleasant walks and Mill Marsh Park.
• Events: Hosts the annual Bovey Tracey Contemporary Craft Fair (one of the best in the South West) and has a popular weekly country market.
Outdoor & Dartmoor access
• Perfect base for Dartmoor: Easy drives up to Haytor Rocks (10-15 minutes), Hound Tor, Becky Falls, and many walking/hiking routes.
• Parke Estate (National Trust): Just outside the town – beautiful wooded valley walks and the NT’s Devon headquarters.
Vibe
Think “quintessential Devon” – friendly, slightly arty, outdoorsy, with a mix of locals, retirees, and young families who’ve moved from cities for the lifestyle. Property prices are high for the region because of its location and charm.
If you’re into hiking, crafts, independent cafés, or just want a pretty English town as a base for exploring Dartmoor, Bovey Tracey is spot-on.

  1. Hey Harvey. I have a Tarmac SL5 and I can fit a 30 on the front but not on the back, as it rubbed on the back of the seat tube. I use Schawble one tyres, other makes may fit a 30 on the back but it would be very tight if it did fit.
