Oslo Christmas Market 2025 – Jul i Vinterland | 4K HDR 60fps

Merry Christmas and welcome to Oslo’s Jul i Vinterland Christmas Market! This tour begins on Karl Johans Gate, the most famous and central street in Oslo. The street is named after King Charles III John (Karl Johan), who was King of Sweden and Norway. The street stretches from the Oslo Central Station (Oslo Sentralstasjon) in the east to the Royal Palace (Slottet) in the west. The sign you see is an advertisement for Freia chocolate which is based here in Oslo. To our left is the Norwegian Parliament building, built in 1866. This place isn’t just beautiful—it’s the heart of Norwegian democracy, operating here since 1866! Love the classic architecture. We are now looking out over Parliament Park towards the Jul i Vinterland market. The Jul i Vinterland market first opened in 2007, making it a relatively modern tradition in Oslo. The city’s main Christmas market is an annual draw for both tourists and locals, transforming Spikersuppa. The market typically runs from mid-November until early January, providing a long period to enjoy the festive atmosphere. Welcome to Jul i Vinterland (Christmas in Winterland) at Spikersuppa! Oslo’s largest Christmas market. The market’s location, Spikersuppa, is the site of a public park during the warmer months of the year. The name Spikersuppa literally means “Nail Soup,” which is named after an old story. Many stalls sell handcrafted goods, such as traditional Norwegian knitwear and wooden toys. The market typically features between 60 to 100 different vendors offering unique goods. The brightly illuminated carousel is the Merry Go Round, one of the carnival area’s main attractions. The weather is a mild 3°C (38°F), which is relatively comfortable for an evening walk in late November. Here you can see a ride called Price’s Giant Helter Skelter. You climb to the top, and then slide down a wide, curving chute. There are several of these outdoor firepits spread out around the market. There are also several of these stands selling candied apples. It was snowing earlier in the day, but it has warmed up this evening. The Norwegian term koselig—meaning cozy, warm, and comfortable—perfectly describes the market’s atmosphere. The English term Crowded, also describes it. 🙂 What is Youtube doing to our children! 🙂 I don’t think I’m to blame. Kids don’t watch this channel. 🙂 I’m kidding. It is always fun because kids recognize my Youtube logo more than anyone else. Everyone wants to be Youtube famous. 🙂 Many children’s favorite market food is the pepperkaker (gingerbread cookies), often decorated with icing…but here, they sell donuts. This walk began at 3:30 pm, just 4 minutes before sunset. The scent of roasted almonds, baked goods, and warm gløgg (spiced mulled wine) fills the air. Gløgg is a popular Scandinavian drink served warm and often mixed with raisins and almonds. In winter, Karl Johans gate + Spikersuppa area becomes one of the coziest, most atmospheric spots in Oslo. Lights, snow (if weather cooperates), holiday decorations, and the contrast of historic buildings + festive market stalls give a very classic European winter Christmas feel. The sign reads: The Christmas Star, The Little Corkscrew, The Balloon Journey, Lego Elkjøp, Toilet, and North Pole. Norwegian gløgg is a hot winter drink made with spices like cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. It’s served with raisins and almonds, and you can find both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. Spikersuppa was originally built in 1956 as a decorative pond and fountain. The pond had water, fountains, and decorative elements — not designed as a skating rink. In 1994 the pond was converted into an ice-skating rink (popularly known as “Narvisen”). The ice-rink is free. The current event “Jul i Vinterland” is organized by Lund Gruppen Arrangement AS (LGA). The company behind it traces back to a much older entity: the predecessor company Lunds Tivoli — which was founded in 1895 (originally at a different location: Youngstorget). According to local media, the founders of Lund Tivoli are ancestors of the people who now run Vinterland — giving a link between present-day winter market and old entertainment tradition. So, while the roots of the market go back to 1895, the current Christmas market is a modern tradition. Many of the stands are the same around the market. The massive illuminated Ferris Wheel dominates the skyline and provides a panoramic view of the city center. In the middle of the ice-rink is a tower that was part of the old fountain. Here is another hard salami stall like we saw at the entrance..and there is another one just like it on the street side. The large wooden structure seen here is the Christmas Pyramid, a European market tradition. The pyramid often includes spinning figures and sometimes serves snacks and gløgg from its base. The John Lennon song playing in the background is one of my favorite Christmas songs. The Norwegian word for Christmas, Jul, is believed to have roots in pre-Christian winter solstice celebrations. “Jul” is an Old Norse word (jól). The festival it referred to was a midwinter celebration held around the winter solstice. In Old Norse sources, jól or júla appears as the name of a pagan holiday period, not tied to a single day. It marked the darkest time of year and the turning point toward longer days. It was also linked to Odin, who was sometimes called Jólnir, meaning “the Yule One.” When Christianity spread through Norway (roughly 900s–1100s), the church kept the established name because the festival was already deeply rooted in society. The timing was shifted to align with Christian Christmas, but the word itself remained. “Jul” today means Christmas, but many pre-Christian traditions survive in cultural form: Yule logs, Yule goats (julebukk), Extended feasting period (romjul). In short, the word jul is a direct survival of the Norse midwinter festival, making it one of the oldest living holiday terms in Europe. Here, there they have someone telling a children’s story. The market is not very big and there are not other in walking distance spread out across the city. This large attraction is Price’s Giant Helter Skelter, a classic fairground slide. The Helter Skelter offers one of the most exciting experiences in the market’s amusement section. That looks fun. I would have liked to have done that as a kid. There is another Christmas Market called the Norsk Folkemuseum Christmas Fair which lasts only one weekend. This year, 2025, it is on December 6th and 7th. I’m starting to feel rain drops. We are moving toward the large, highly-photographed Light Tunnel installation. This tunnel of lights is one of the most popular spots for visitors to take holiday photos. Inside the Light Tunnel, the concentration of bulbs creates an immersive, magical atmosphere. Thousands of warm, glowing LED lights are synchronized to create the dynamic display. The use of light installations like this has become a signature feature of modern Christmas markets. We are exiting the light tunnel and moving toward the end of the market near the National Theatre. Here at the other end of the market is the National Theater, which opened in 1899. Henrik Ibsen, Norway’s most famous playwright, had many works premiere here. The plaza in front features statues of Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, celebrating Norway’s literary heritage. The path to our left leads up to the Royal Palace, which I filmed during the day tour of the market. For a hearty meal, try fårikål (mutton and cabbage stew), which is considered Norway’s national dish. I had this meal while in Norway, however it was at my family’s house and not here at the market. We are at the secondary Jul i Vinterland Entrance, marking the boundary of the main market area. We are now making our way back toward the Parliament and the starting point of the market area. The street decorations along Karl Johans gate extend the festive atmosphere beyond the market square. More of that same hard salami! What’s going on here Oslo? Oslo is generally considered one of the more expensive cities in Europe, both to live in and to visit. Costs are comparable to Copenhagen, Stockholm, or Zurich. 5. What a nice walk in Oslo’s Vinterland of Lights, Isaac. Christmassy yet very different from Germany’s and the Alsace markets. Thanks so much for bringing the beauty and magic to our screens! A Merry Christmas to you and your family! ✨🎄🕊

  6. Привет ☕️ 👋🏻 🥨 Спасибо большое за восхитительно красивую прогулку по городу 🎁🚶🏼📹 👍🏻 🎉🔝🎄🎅🏻 🆒️ 🥳

  7. What a crowd! So far I have seen Lisbon and Porto, Riquewihr and Moscow. The latter was less crowded, all others massive amounts of people! Would like to go on that Ferries Wheel, it is enormous. And try the cheeses, they look delicious. Hope to see Prague and Budapest, which last year I thought were the prettiest non-Alsacian. Nothing beats Alsace, with their fairy houses.
