ep1. 출근하다 삼천포로 빠지면 생기는 일 – 서울에서 자전거로 여행하는 방법

Come out, come out, come out! Huh!? I’m closing the door! Get out! I told you clearly / I warned you Hey, this thing! Ugh, wait, ouch, hold on [ Foam Roller Morning Stretching ] Ah! Ah! Agh! Ouch! Ahhhh!! [ Peaceful ] I usually commute by car But today, I’m trying the bike Before riding the bike I should put sunscreen on first Nice, it works as a mirror too I’m already late today [ Taking the bike out after a long time ] It’s been so long since I rode this It’s gotten moldy… I’m allergic to stuff like this Let me wipe it again It’s precious, this is where I sit Scrub scrub scrub Ugh! Ahhh! This thing! Is the tire too loose? Ah, so this is how you do it? Like this… and here… OK Well, at least I had everything I keep buying things and forgetting I bought them (It’s been a while, so lots to fix) Alright, let’s head out stylishly now, shall we? What is this now? Why is this open? Okay, let’s go! Ahh, so refreshing That’s the beauty of an e-bike In hilly Seoul, You can ride anywhere so freely Next to Seoul Station is Yongsan-gu This neighborhood is called Seogye-dong (Even on electric) it’s still tough… There are a lot of old houses here Some old Japanese-style houses too Like the vibe of Reply 1988 Lots of single-family houses like in old dramas This is the retaining wall next to Baemoon High School Can I even go up there? Can I even go up there? Is it possible? Geez… Ahh! Whoa! [E-bike sudden acceleration] There’s an old market called Manri Market It’s on the hill crest between Seoul Station and Mapo It’s really fun inside Let’s go again Now crossing Manri Market in Seogye-dong This is Jungnim-dong Why is it bumping so much? Wow, this… From what I know… These look like villas from the ’70s and ’80s These plots used to be homes and Hanok houses All single-story houses back in the day Hanil Middle & High School This area still has that old vibe I like this neighborhood They must be building apartments Every neighborhood needs a mill, hair salon, hardware store, electrician, locksmith In a neighborhood, A real estate agency too Oh, look at that house Neighborhood grocery store Ooh My butt’s starting to hurt I’m standing while riding The village bus runs here, nice That’s Chungjeongno Station, and that’s Bukahyeon-dong I forgot to wear a helmet today So I guess I have to stay on the sidewalk today Normally, you can ride on the far right lane Bicycles are allowed there too This is Bukahyeon 4-dong Bukahyeon 4 Redevelopment Promotion Zone Public designation notice This area used to be all residential houses Now it’s full of apartments, wow But some traces remain You can still feel the old neighborhood a bit Whoa, look! A slope elevator Looks fun When going downhill, keep the gear heavy This is Ewha Station This is Ewha Station Just a sec Wow, it’s been a long time here Why would I come to Ewha normally? Only when there’s an event or something Over there, There’s a building designed by Dominique Perrault A famous architect Can’t see it / it’s underground architecture It cuts into the ground Haven’t been here in a while Should we check out Ewha’s commercial street? So this is how it is these days It’s still early morning Not many people yet Across the street, there’s a pretty unique Commercial building That used to be the old Sinchon Station From the Japanese colonial era / preserved now And used as a tourist information center now The railway park is really nice Passing Yonsei University and Severance Hospital I come here sometimes, because of the hospital But doctors at big hospitals… Why are they so unfriendly sometimes? At least the ones I met (often) were Whoa, amazing I wanted to look around Yonsei but Looks like there’s an event today, they’re blocking entry Ring ring, please make way A bicycle is passing Riiiiing~ I love this old vibe Old retaining walls have a charm Love it Oh? Wow, that’s a steep hill That way leads to Hapjeong and Hongdae This way leads to Bukgajwa-dong and Yeonhui-dong Should I pass by Yeonhui-dong? If you go into this alley, You’ll arrive in Yeonhui-dong Lots to see in Yeonhui-dong too New buildings, cafes, workshops Parkment looks interesting too Should we turn back for a sec? This place… Parkment… It’s a really fun space… This one right here… This place… here… if you look for a second Why are people lining up? Behind Parkment earlier, There’s a weird-looking building That’s where Lee Hyori teaches yoga There Looks like they’re doing construction here Even when these red brick houses get old, they still feel so warm and familiar Oh, this is a police station? Looks like it’s closed Give this to me Oh, huh? In neighborhoods like this, these little tucked-away cafes are so great Next time, I should come back to Yeonhui-dong and really look around properly Oh, what’s this? This one, I know this building Oh, I think someone I know designed this See, this is the charm of traveling with no plan You stumble on things like this Ah, I really like this area These hills… my knees hurt Ah, what is this… At times like this, you use a lighter gear I’ve actually never come up this road before Never had a reason to never even thought of coming here Usually in a car, you just stay on the big roads But riding like this today, I end up on roads like this Wow, this neighborhood is nice I only climbed a little and now this place is called Gungdung Mountain Gung… ah… Gungdong Mountain Not “butt mountain,” it’s Gungdong Mountain Oh This is where you play that song From “Itaewon Class” If you listen to that while riding, feels like you can do anything, right? Nice mountain Not sure if my phone can capture this but once you come up, you can see all the nearby neighborhoods at a glance Such a pretty area Most of our foreign tourists will probably only hit the main tourist spots Oh wow Over there you can see toward Pyeongchang-dong and Bukhansan Mountain Nice car Riding like this makes the commute actually nice On a bike, it really feels like I’m going on a trip I get to ride completely new routes What’s this? Ah, I always drive underneath here Huh? So this is what it looks like up here It’s a really steep slope, but it’ll be fine, right? Ah, this part… Hey, this… Whoa Whoa! Hold on Whoa… Jeez Thought I was gonna die It’s because with my leg length, I’ve set the seat, the saddle, really high So… my butt is always kind of lifted When I go downhill, it feels like I’ll flip forward We’ve passed Yeonhui-dong Now heading toward Jeungsan Station Heungnam Bridge Oh man Actually, right now it’s only like 16, 19 km/h But on a bike it feels super fast In a car, at that speed, it would feel really slow Still, it’s exercise, I’m getting hungry Usually, in this condition, I’d stop somewhere on the way and grab a quick bite All clear left and right Beep beep Sorry about that But really, I should wear a helmet and ride on the road Looks like this area is called Moraenae This used to be all hillside housing Now it’s all been redeveloped into apartments Wow, an apartment forest, literally (Please quickly move to the sidewalk) (Please move toward the sidewalk) I’m already on the sidewalk, sir (Please quickly move to a safe sidewalk area) (Please quickly move to a safe sidewalk area) There, okay? Let’s say we agreed, then Okay, let’s go Okay, check left and right Doing as I’m told Left and right, all clear Hey, quiet down, it’s embarrassing I’ll oil you later Just bear with it for today This is finally Bukgajwa Intersection From Bukgajwa Intersection, if you head toward Bulgwang Station, there’s a white building… Good job today Okay, we finally arrived Hello I’ve invited a construction expert today [ Checking the day’s schedule in the morning ] (Lately I really love all this greenery) [ Patrol starts ] First, I check whether there are any issues with the space It’s not my building, of course, but it’s a place I manage Turn the lights on too, can’t be dark This used to be an old bathhouse Over here is for pop-up exhibitions… and such A place where fun things are always happening —or should be happening— that kind of place Back in the day, this was a water tank A reservoir for holding water Because this used to be a bathhouse It rained, and it started leaking So this part needs fixing The place is divided into Buildings A, B, and C Building A used to be the old bathhouse/commercial building Right across is Building B and Building C, which used to be houses [ Korea’s first 1 Euro Project ] [ Together with 24 carefully selected lifestyle brands ] [ We send out the message: “It’s okay to live like this.” ] [ A two-way lifestyle proposal platform ] [ That suggests how we might live differently ] [ Late lunch ] Now I’ve just left the Yeonhui–Bukgajwa space for today I’ve wrapped up some of my work and my next meeting is in Daechi-dong Not sure… If I go north, I think that’s the way to Myongji University I came down from up there earlier Thought I was gonna die on the way down It was scary I’ll head into the side streets Wow Hi there As expected, wow… Yeonhui-dong is great I’m in a hurry but I keep turning around to look Ooh There are fun little cafes everywhere I really should hurry… but this neighborhood is so interesting New buildings like this too Oh, what’s this? This place looks so fun Ah, I really like this area This is a fun neighborhood “Yeonhui-dong Photo Studio” Wow, what’s that super popular-looking spot? Now back to Sinchon Yonsei and Ewha Womans University (I’ll pass by) Passing Yeonhui-dong Cathedral and heading toward Yongsan Oho Hey, Meta Oh, this is cool Didn’t know this was here (Sinchon underpass) Above us is the railway What, was there an accident? (spotted a broadcast van) Oh wow There’s another path like this Lots of people walk here We’re right next to the tracks now Even right along the tracks like this, there are so many houses Riding a bike, I really end up going everywhere It’s fun Oh man Who was it that said “no one goes to Sinchon anymore”? That it’s not like the old Sinchon? There are tons of people here Outback Steakhouse is still here too This is Ewha Womans University One of the side streets near Sinchon Station There are lots of officetels here And the lower floors are mostly shops and… This part is all empty Seobu Office of Education What’s this line for? I’m so exhausted This is brutal Look at this, suddenly my bike battery dropped to two bars Just like that Come on, power! Let’s go, power! Now I’m free Not taking the main road anymore The back roads are nicer Woohoo Ho~ This area is nice Old houses On the right, really old buildings On the left, redeveloped area Which do you all prefer? In Korea, at each crosswalk they put these things so people can rest for a bit I think that’s really nice Foreigners find it really interesting I’m passing through Ahyeon-dong now There’s an area here called Aeogae Originally, among the old cemeteries, it was where babies were buried when they passed away From that, the name “Aeogae” is said to come That’s one story about the origin… If you go that way, there’s the Chungjeongno Apartments which are Korea’s very first apartments Chungjeongno Apartments And around here, there are lots of sewing factories The ones toward Seoul Station and Seogye-dong, around Manri hill, back in the day, apparently supplied high-end products to department stores And now the ones everyone knows, the Dongdaemun-area factories, they say mostly supply general brands Of course, that’s what the locals here say I don’t know what’s objectively true This was originally all hillside, full of old, deteriorated housing That old building on the left is now Son Ki-jeong Memorial Park It’s also a shared facility for local residents There’s a swimming pool and Bongsan Elementary School Looks cool, right? (Does it, really?) This is where runner Son Ki-jeong won his gold medal… Youngone Trading—this is The North Face, right? I know it as a famous trading company Now it just looks like an ordinary park Let me show you again—simply, I’ll show you again It’s not just a park See that hanok? That traditional house? Back when they were building those apartments, this whole area was in turmoil over redevelopment issues That hanok over there, it used to be the home of a major Korean conglomerate founder and his descendants still lived there
(I later found out it’s now a high-end omakase restaurant.) But when the apartments were being redeveloped, those houses were all set to be demolished too The founder’s descendant really didn’t want that So they looked for a way to protect it and realized that if they made it a cultural heritage site, they couldn’t touch it during redevelopment So they preserved that hanok mansion And they turned the surrounding area into a park Which ended up being an even better space for people For the apartment residents too, instead of just apartments, there’s a meaningful place and a park as well That big hanok in Seogye-dong too, that one, that one— that was a large Joseon-era salt warehouse… See that bridge? Why would there be a bridge in the middle of town? Originally, a stream used to flow underneath it Later on, they covered the stream over Look here, Manri Bathhouse That’s where I rode up so hard earlier, right? That’s Namsan over there We’re in Cheongpa-dong now This neighborhood was developed back in the Japanese occupation So if you look at it now, the plots are all very neat and rectangular These parcel divisions were laid out long ago Back then, these were all pretty single houses But using those same plots, they started developing villas That’s how the whole neighborhood changed like this Uh… Oh, houses like these And then houses like those A few are still left This is tough Ugh Ah… I’ll just lock it up right here Since it’s not supposed to rain today Meow, meow… hope there aren’t any cats in here? Come out, come out, come out, come out This is not your house I’m closing the door Huh!? I’m going to close the door Come out now I clearly warned you I told you already That’ll be it for today I’m heading to my next meeting location Feels like the day just flashed by It’s a feeling I don’t usually get I always just zip there by car, work, and then zip back again But today it kind of feels like I went on a trip Yeah, today it really feels like I went on a trip And like I got some exercise in too In that short time—from here to my workplace— by car it’s only 20–30 minutes But when I go by bike, it takes about 50 minutes And in that time I saw so many things When I’m driving, I just look straight ahead and at the mirrors, that’s it But commuting by bike, it doesn’t feel like a commute, which is great Except when it’s snowing or raining, I think I’ll keep riding I even stumbled upon a building from a magazine that I’d always wanted to visit And really cool places that don’t even show up on Instagram, like pretty cafes or little alley restaurants I got to see all those kinds of places too It was so good Everyday life feels like travel Huge success I went down some pretty alleys and looked around I went to neighborhoods where I don’t know anyone and have no connection at all Those experiences don’t seem like a big deal, but they make my life feel a little richer somehow Even just doing it for a day or two, I can already feel that So I’ll try to do it as often as I can This is my dinner for today I opened the rice cooker and there was no rice So I just grabbed whatever I could find that I could throw into milk Gathered everything that might work Cacao, candied walnuts, puffed rice snacks, granola— there’s a little bit of each I’ll just finish them all I love eating so much so I tend to eat a lot of different things But lately my portions have gotten smaller and sometimes I want to eat a bit lighter Greek yogurt, and milk with things thrown in slurp, slurp The milk only has two days left on the date I actually drink it even if it’s about a week over I probably can’t call this a health food [Tried soaking soboro bread in milk] Like an oatmeal style with soboro bread and then mixed it with milk A month ago, on a business trip to Busan, I bought this at Busan Station and froze it Just in case it went bad I microwaved it and now it’s a bit warm A bakery called Taeseongdang I really like Seongsimdang in Daejeon Ow, hot Busan has Taeseongdang, but I’m not sure if it’s on Seongsimdang’s level Why does it feel like smacking your lips makes it taste better? [The bread is swelling up in my stomach] Flour and milk really go well together First you put the bread in your mouth, and while you’re chewing, if you take some milk and chew it together, I really love that combination Feels kind of luxurious? The milk’s a little… contaminated… Right now, it’s contaminated with cacao Even when I’m just taking a short break from work to eat, I have a habit of turning the TV on, whether I watch it or not Then I usually spend like ten minutes flipping channels, wondering what to watch Lately though, I mostly settle on something funny to switch my brain off for a bit, reset my mood, and get a little laugh I feel like I’m missing that in my life In the past, even on my own, I feel like there were more little events and moments Now I don’t really have many memorable events [Did some more work, then lay down] They say you shouldn’t look at the TV or your phone right before going to sleep But somehow I end up watching anyway It’s kind of a reward mindset… Maybe because I rode the bike today, I’m getting sleepy easily Good night, sleep well and have good dreams
