I have to FIX this problem RIGHT NOW! | S1E119

Having begun my journey as a complete novice, I rode my motorcycle across North America, Ireland, and the UK. From Europe, it’ll be an adventure down to Cape Town. We’ll head back up to the Middle East, and from there it’ll be Asia and down to Australia. New Zealand’s southernmost drivable point will mark the end of my trip. I’m calling it the Big Spiral, and this is Act 5, A Journey Through Europe. Buenos días desde Navas, España. I just looked up how to say that. Basically, good morning from Navas, Spain. So today we’re going to head south-east. Basically, the goal is Africa here, but we’re not going to make it to Africa today. But yeah, I got a couple of things planned along the day. We’re going to do a bunch of off-roads. Spain is amazing for off-road. And it’s known for its fairly gnarly off-road too, so hopefully we find some tricky riding today. Because that’s what I want to do. It’s going to be good. I’m excited. I’m always excited when I’m on a bike. Oh, gravel. Perfect. Stand up. Maybe I’m just going to stop and set my tire pressure quick. I think my pressures are too high. Yeah, 25. Down to 20. 18. Good. What’s it like? 35. That’s… Too much. 25. That’s good. I think these are all olive trees. Or what? No, maybe not. What is that? It’s got a shell on it. I have no idea then. This is an almond tree. Fairly arid here though. Time for some… Spanish countryside. That bike feels a little better with the lower pressures… I need to practice shifting standing up. Oh, that was the wrong way. It wasn’t the wrong way. It was just I didn’t shift. Let’s try again. Yeah, it’s a bit awkward doing it while standing up. But… Once you get used to it, it won’t be awkward anymore. Oh, I downshifted. Nice. Well, it’s… Already getting interesting. Ooh. Wow. Here we go. That wasn’t so bad. It just rolled right up there. I think in the past, that would have been more difficult. But… I think now that the bike is kind of balanced better, it’s much easier. So these have to be olive trees, no? Oh, yeah. You can see here. These are olives. Well, this is an interesting route. I don’t think anybody goes this way. Oh, I think I have to go down there. Okay. Oh. That guy’s got a shotgun. And those cars had trailers on them that looked like they held dogs. Oh, yeah. There’s the dogs. There’s the guns. Okay. I wonder what they’re hunting for. I imagine a bird. Some kind of bird. If it’s a shotgun, I would imagine. Although, small dogs. Small dogs are good for going into small holes. I don’t know. Maybe rabbits? Okay. I think there’s a lake up here. Or maybe a reservoir. Have a little lunch there, I think. Oh, yeah. There’s the lake. Alright. So, I got a whole bunch of food in here. Well, not a whole bunch, but enough for lunch. Although, this is my bread. It’s got squished a little. And food. Another thing I wanted to mention is I’ve made some changes to the bike. So, ever since I kind of made the bike more rideable by putting the tank bag here, moving the weight forward and less weight here, I can ride it harder. And so, my plastics have been melting again. If you remember that time I was crossing, I don’t know, Nebraska or something like that. And my tire was low. And my plastics started melting because the bike was working so hard. Well, now the bike’s working hard, but just going a lot slower and climbing hills. And just because I can do it now, the bike’s a lot more confidence-inspiring. So, yeah. The plastics have been melting again. So, you can see it a little bit here. There’s like this metal thing here. Basically, that’s just like a spacer that allows air to move through there and just keeps the plastic further away from the exhaust. I actually have one down here, too. Maybe you can’t see it. Yeah. So, basically, I just put two on there. So, I think it’s okay now. Things have stopped melting. The bike’s slowly getting better. The bike is slowly getting better. And it’s becoming more and more fun to ride. Yeah. I’m just going to have myself a banana. And then we’ll get going. Oh, such a cool town. I’m going down there. I love these little towns. It’s so cool. Church. Amazing. Oh, Central Square. Wow. Oh. That’s stairs there. Okay. Maybe I can’t go that way. Yeah. That wasn’t going to work that way. This way, I guess. Oh, back to the square. Amazing. Oh, and there’s the town from the outside. So cool. And to the gravel. Perfect. There’s a cliff. That’s cool. Right up to the windmill. Wow. So cool. I love that shadow. Oh, we’re really descending into this canyon here. Wow. Look at that. And I think it’s this type of rock formation that we’re going to go look at. Up here. Up here, I think. So this little village is called Margalef. And it’s just like nestled. Oh, maybe I have to go down. It’s basically this village just nestled in the rocks here. Maybe, we’ll go this way. And it’s just fascinating. And, oh man. What a village. Go this way, I guess. Oh, yeah. Maybe I’ll go through here. This is right on a cliff. Wow. What a cool village. Amazing. Wow. Look at this. Isn’t this amazing? Wow. And someone built like a some kind of, I don’t know what that is. Some kind of bridge there. Oh, this is cool. Just don’t want to. Hard to see around the corners. Yeah, look. This. They built a wall. Like straight around the cliff here. And I guess this is good for climbing. Good morning. okay I think… can I go up here? Ya. I think I want to get something to drink maybe it’s a cafe or something like that Little Fiat 500 so cute But yeah it’s almost like the cliffs are invisible because they built so much around it but yeah you can see they just built right on the cliffs here just be careful a little bit hey okay I don’t speak Spanish Coca? Cola. Cola? Coca-Cola. Coca, Coca, only Coca is cocaine Oh. Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola, ya Ice and lemon? Yes, yes, yes There you go Pay? Yes Card? Card, yes. 5.30. Ok. Climb or walk? Climb? Escalar? Ya, stairs? Climb or walk? Here? No. No, no. In Margalef Village Margalef? Here? Ah, no comprende. Nothing, nothing. Wherever you want? On the terrace, on the street, wherever you want. Ok. Here or there. Ok. Let’s go Ah, here… Climbing and hiking in popular in Margalef Which is why she was asking me about climbing or walking. And something I only understood after translating this video. Well, I guess in Spain, coca has a different meaning. Well, I guess in Spain, coca has a different meaning. I’m… Of the Spanish I learned, it’s from Mexico and in Mexico you can use coca as the word for coca-cola. But anyhow, it went down really well. Okay, maybe I have to go back the other way. It’s getting all dead ends. Oh, there’s a dog there. Hello. Whatcha doing? Looks happy. Oh yeah, I guess this is the bottom of the village, isn’t it? So cool. Anyhow, I wish my Spanish was a little better. But right now my focus is French because it’s going to be more helpful in the future. Look how they cut that out. It’s awesome. These intersections are a little funny. Basically have to go take that off ramp to cross the road. It’s a very Spanish thing, but I’ve kind of forgot about that. Ah, my tablet just died. Ah, I need that thing. It’s not been charging properly. The bikes running, and it’s suposedly charging, but it’s not taking the charge Yeah, now I can’t navigate. I gotta solve the problem here. Okay, um. I got to figure out why this is either not charging or. I believe this is connected into the front here. Maybe it’s just a loose connection. I have to take off the front here to access where it’s connected. Okay, I got to do that quick. All right, so I might have figured something out. So I don’t know if you can see on the screen that it shows a charging logo there. Is it the cable, maybe? Still charging. Okay, so what I did is basically the wire runs here, and it basically goes to this little unit here, and you can see there’s a green light in there. Basically, what that unit does is it disables the power to the tablet once it drops below 13 volts, something like that. So the idea is so it doesn’t discharge your battery while I was trying to charge the tablet. And what I did like it looks like the connections are all still good here. But I just switched this connector. It was originally on this one and I switched it to that one. And then I noticed this… the charging logo. Oh, it just disappeared now. Maybe I’ll mess with this. Oh, it came back. Actually the light here. The light is staying on. And if I mess with this the light doesn’t flicker or anything. So anyhow, I’ll probably just put it back together and see what happens. Okay, just started the bike. It says it’s charging. Let me try to start it. Okay, it says it’s charging but it’s at 1%. I’ll keep an eye on it It’s 1% we’ll see if it gets up to 2%. Oh, it’s at 2%. Woo! It must have been loose connection or something. Alright, let’s keep going. Look at those mountains there. Oh, they look good. What is that? Old Citroen. Well there’s a little village there and that’s where I’m staying tonight I think. Assuming the hotel has some space for me. Oh look at that church in the middle there. It’s just gorgeous isn’t it. Oh it’s a cute little town isn’t it. Oh man. Spain isn’t bad right? It’s not bad. Keep going I think. Streets are unbelievable. My navigation wants me to go down here. Okay. It’s a bit tricky. There’s a little bar here maybe that’s dinner for me later on. And then left here? Oh that’s it. It says it’s good for motorbikes. I don’t know where I’d park it though. I guess I should try to call. Yeah. Hello, do you speak English? No, I speak Spanish. Yes, tell me. French? Yes, in French. I’ve arrived at the hotel [In Spanish] At the house. [In French] At the house. What.. uh.. Are you waiting for a room? [In Spanish] I don’t understand.
[In French] I’m at the door. At the door. One minute. Thank you. I don’t think they get a ton of visitors. I hope someone comes. Sounds like he’s coming. One minute. I don’t speak Spanish No? A little bit French. A little bit is enough. A little bit is enough. Okay. – All right. How are you?
– Okay. – The moto, inside.
– Okay. There. [In French] Maintenant? Now?
– Yes, now. Where do you want. Ah, thank you. – Ah, here?
– Yes A little oil. Drip. – Drip?
– Yea To put something. This one? Yes. Whatever you want. Yes. Ok. Ok. Let’s go? Let’s go. Then you can come and get your things. Ah, I’ll come back. Return. Let’s go. Then. – The key to the garage…
– Okay Here. – Ok?
– Ok To be used by you, for your use and other guests. Use of all. Oh, other people, yes. Of bicycles, other motorcycles. Mmm, yeah, yeah. Just return. Yes, here. Ok, ok. You take it and leave it. Yeah. I understand. Let’s go to the room. Ah. Uh, pay? Wait, wait. Check in, first! Oh, yeah, check in. Uh, yes The key… here and to the street door. Ah, yeah. Yes… Let’s go downstairs. Below. How much? How much? 65. 60… Is it, uh, 6, 5? 60. 60 and five. Ok. Come on, check in, downstairs. Ok. We understand each other, yes? Certainly I’m sorry. [In French] Sorry. I’m, uh… My Spanish… No good. No good. No good. No problem, no problem. For use by all, living room, kitchen, dining room. Yes? For all guests. Ah, ya. Good good. For you… yes? Breakfast here. For you. I have a fridge for each guest. For you, this. Breakfast. Coffee. You, whenever you want. Breakfast, whenever you want. Coffee. You, whenever you want. A bar, restaurant. To eat or drink. Yes. “HERRERO”. Oh, the bar. Ya, ya, I’m going. – Check in.
– Yup Passport? With motorcycle. – Ah, well, let’s go get it.
– Okay Ok. There we go. Address? Phone? – Oh, phone.
– Phone. – Sign?
– Sign, yes. Okay. Good. This is for you. You want to pay now? Pay now? Now. Hour? Oh, um… Card? – Card?
– Yes – All right?
– All right? – Everything all right? All good. – My name is Mari Carmen. Mari Carmen.
– Carmen. – You, Eric.
– Eric, yes. Very good. Remember the fridge, breakfast for you. Okay. – And… Okay? All right?
– Okay. Thank you very much. Well, this is my view. And, uh, that was so fun. Um, it can be a little intimidating to, to try to communicate when you don’t know the language, but when the other person is so enthusiastic and patient and willing to try to communicate, it is so fun. I just love it. It’s so fun. And I’ve got this cool. Here. I’ll show you the, the room. I chose this place cause it was cheap. And I think we’re really off the beaten path here. That’s why like nobody was even here when I arrived Um, but the, the room is actually really cool. Uh, so I’m just on, so I’m just on the patio right now. And then the room is here. And then yeah, I got a twin bed and stuff. Uh, there’s like this roll thing. I’m not sure how that works exactly AC Um, but this, this was a surprise. Actually, I already pulled out the ladder. It normally hides behind this cabinet here. And I haven’t gone up yet, but there is like a little, there’s an extra bed up here. Isn’t that cool Um, and then yeah, the bathroom shower. Anyhow, uh, it’s, um, you know, it can be, like I said, it can be intimidating. You’re like, aah.. you know, I think that’s the reason a lot of people don’t travel. Cause they don’t know language, but it’s actually so fun. Like when the other person is willing to try to communicate and, uh, yeah. And so it was a mix of French, English, Spanish in there. Um, and, uh, yeah, it all worked out. It always works out in the end I think And, and when, when you have these kinds of situations, it just gives you more confidence in the future. And so, yeah, I feel like, well, I’m not as nervous to do the same thing in the future. Anyways, great day. Uh, thank you so much for watching the video. Uh, there is a link on the screen to either the next video or another video that you might like. And then also, uh, there’ll be also a link to my Patreon in case you wanted to help support my journey around the world, the big spiral. And then there’ll also be early videos there and, occasionally like bonus content, like deleted scenes or a question answer podcast. Uh, that kind of thing. Uh, anyhow, uh, thanks for watching and we’ll see you next time. and we’ll see you next time.

Heading south through Spain, there is a problem with my bike…

  1. For those wondering why i don’t use a translation app, it’s actually a lot more enjoyable to interact with other people without a phone in between. I understood Carmen well enough to have my breakfast the next day, and a learned a few things along the way 🙂

Now if it’s critical that i understand something, I’ll use an app.

  2. Tip for standing up for off road: stand on your toes, toes in so you dig your knees into the tank. When you need to shift or brake move your foot. There is no other way if you ride motocross boots on a enduro bike.

I love to see how your riding has improved since the beginning of your trip. Don't forget to look back where you came from. Respect for your bravery.

  3. Everyone needs to remember this is a learning experience for you when it comes to riding and working on motorcycle. I'm been riding for 50 years and your doing all right.Plus all the great footage your giving us. All these negative people out there only wish they could do what your doing. Only thing you can tell them if you can do a better job then do it and will watch you.

  4. Eric, why do you not use translation on your phone? Apps you talk into your phone and it translates to any language you pick, I use it for work. Great job, we’re regulars here, enjoy your videos!

  5. Hey man I do understand the struggle with other languages but man if you have internet or data on your phone just pull Google translator and do live translation will help you a lot.

  6. Really interesting with all those buildings and tight quarters … and even from the drone view .. there are not many people seen … they are all inside I suppose.

  7. When you don't know the language it's best to speak your own language and use signs when possible.
It's nice to watch children speaking own language and totally understanding each other.

  8. Your episodes just keep getting better and I’m learning that Spain has so much more to offer than the coastal tourist cities.
Hope you get your light fixed very soon….do you carry spare bulbs?
Several years ago I experienced a complete electrical failure whilst driving my Saab at 70mph on a motorway at night….very disorientating for several seconds. Looking forward to all of your future episodes Eric. Stay safe. From Cambridge UK 🇬🇧

  9. stop in any IKEA ad buy a stop fire cover? You can cut it and protect in between your exhaust heat and your luggage. I'm using it directly on exhaust of enduro bike , super super hot, it stays in place, half wrapped with two inox collars. zero luggage melting. Period
