Kyoto’s Hidden Gem Ditch the Subway, Bike the City!
To kick off our search for Kyoto’s worst tourist attraction, we rented a couple of bikes and set out into the city. Unlike other major Japanese cities, Kyoto’s subway system is minimal, just two lines, one north south, and one east west. Most public transit happens above the ground on buses. But after a few days here, we found our favorite way to get around is by bike. Kyoto is incredibly bike friendly with dedicated lanes on most roads. Riding through town gives you a front row seat to daily life. Locals on their morning commutes. Shops quietly opening for the day.
😬 The biggest letdown in all of Kyoto? We think we found it. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove might look magical on Instagram—but in person, it’s a crowded, noisy, and underwhelming experience that left us wondering why it’s so hyped. We’re calling it: this might be Kyoto’s worst tourist trap.
Instagram Vs Reality Strikes Again
But it wasn’t all bad. We biked through Kyoto’s quiet neighborhoods, explored Arashiyama Park, walked the Katsura River, tasted the best tsukemono we’ve ever had, and ended the day with a relaxing foot onsen at Arashiyama Station.
