被乌干达入境处拒绝 岂有此理! 持有效电子签证 竟被要求重新花55美元买一张贴纸签证! Uganda denied my entry coz I did not want to pay again
Hello, friends. I’m in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya in East Africa. When it comes to Africa, many friends who have never been to Africa may think of they may think that Africa is just a poor, drought, war and heat. Right? So Africans are black. But this idea is very wrong. Many countries are indeed poor, but for example, in East Africa, Kenya, it’s not as poor as we imagine. Wait a minute. let me show you the weather line outside. I’m on the tenth floor now. Okay, let’s see. This is a district in the capital of East Africa, Nairobi. Let’s see what the weather line looks like. There are many Chinese in this area. Let’s zoom in a little bit. Let’s see what’s here. Pussy Casino. Let’s look at the street. You can see that The weather line is actually is similar to that of third- and fourth-tier cities in China. I have been here for more than ten days. I have a discovery here. that is, Kenya is really different from what I imagined. For example, all over our country, especially in the past two or three years, when the real estate market is declining, I never thought that that Africa also has opportunities in real estate. After I came here, I heard and saw on the spot and I saw construction sites everywhere. and new apartment buildings are being built everywhere. So I asked around. it is indeed is a good time to invest in real estate. Because, as we all know, Kenya its politics has been relatively stable in the past decades. no civil war, and there are no major conflicts with neighboring countries. nor fought with its neighbors. So its politics is relatively stable. In addition, I didn’t know that in this East African country, Kenya, has many and more and more UN agencies have also been located here. such as the United Nations’ headquarters in Africa are also located here. And the World Bank such as some African headquarters of the Fortune Five Hundred are also located in Nairobi. Because its political situation is relatively stable, and its geographical location is quite good. Why? It can be said that Kenya is the gateway to East Africa. Because on its coast, there is a port called Mombasa. Then, Mombasa is about five hundred kilometers away from Nairobi. Due to the Belt and Road Initiative, China also helped build the Nairobi Expressway. So the transportation is very convenient. In addition, many people don’t know that I didn’t know that either. Nairobi, Although it is located in the tropics, is very hot all year round, right? but in Nairobi, it is an exception. because its altitude is about one thousand eight hundred meters, so it’s really like spring all year round. Even better than the climate in Kunming. Because the winter in Kunming is actually quite cold. Sometimes it can be three or four degrees. But in the capital of East Africa, the temperature is constant throughout the year. and it’s about fifteen or sixteen degrees at night. twenty-five or twenty-six degrees during the day, It’s very comfortable. For example, in this apartment I live in, I don’t even need air conditioning. And as far as I can see, almost no buildings have air conditioners. Because it’s not needed. It’s twenty-five or six degrees during the day, and fifteen or sixteen degrees at night. and a thin blanket is enough. So it’s really very comfortable. I really envy the climate here. Let’s take a look at my the homestay in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. I booked it online. on Booking Dot com. On the left is the kitchen. It’s designed in white, which is the main color. And then, you can see that it’s in Chinese. This is the pot I bought. I take it everywhere. I usually bring such a pot. It’s very convenient. These are all the things the landlord has equipped. This refrigerator is very big. but it’s a Korean brand. There’s also a coffee machine, toaster, and so on. There is also a relatively large TV here. Let’s take a look later. Okay, let’s take a look. On the right is a dry and wet separated bathroom. I think it’s good. Okay, let’s go in. On the right is a small dresser. and can also be used as a writing desk. And there is a small sofa here. As I mentioned earlier, there is a large TV. And it’s equipped with drinking water. I think it’s pretty good. In Kenya, almost I’ve stayed in three or four places that have this. drinking water. which is very thoughtful. Okay, this is a bed. It’s a double bed, and there’s a wardrobe here. There is a large washing machine. It’s also a Korean brand. I don’t know why it’s a Korean brand. Okay, and outside is the skyline of the place where I am. is pretty good. Okay, have you noticed that The design of this small studio in this homestay its design seems to be almost identical to the one is almost exactly the same. Right? When I came in, I felt very familiar. Then I asked about it. Oh, it’s true. It’s a Chinese real estate developer one of the projects in Kenya. They have done the second and third phases, and so on. And I heard that each one is better than the other. Look at this bowl. I ordered it online in RMB, about two hundred yuan. which is about thirty dollars or twenty-five euros. I think the price is acceptable. What do you think? Okay, this is my intuitive impression of Kenya a cursory impression. But today I want to talk about something else. Originally, the afternoon before yesterday, I took the international long-distance bus here. I wanted to go from Nairobi, Kenya to the capital of the neighboring country Uganda, Kampala, Kenya or Africa, Generally speaking, their infrastructure is very far behind China. which means very backward. From Nairobi to the border city of Busia, The distance from Nairobi to Portia is about five hundred kilometers. Do you know? How long does it take for the bus I took the day before yesterday? It takes about fourteen hours. You heard me right. You can imagine how slow it is. You can know how slow the speed is. Why is it so slow? It’s because its infrastructure is too bad. One aspect is that the roads are very bad. How bad? I don’t say it, you may not believe it. Many of its roads which is about three hundred kilometers long. There are many potholes on the road. potholes. Sometimes, the potholes are one or two meters wide. And last night, I also saw their capital, Nairobi. some streets even on the streets of the capital, have potholes. I also saw a pit about fifty centimeters fifty to sixty centimeters. in the downtown area, which is like a manhole cover. was missing. And then there was a big hole. I think it’s very dangerous. As I saw in Kenya, there are often such potholes. which shows that its infrastructure is very backward. So although it’s only five hundred kilometers, but the whole journey takes about fourteen hours. I took this bus. I want to go to Uganda next door. departing at around four pm. and I didn’t arrive until around three or four in the morning. That means it took a full twelve hours. It’s really too long. Then I went back home, I spent fifteen to sixteen hours. That means The fourteen hours I mentioned earlier is not exaggerated, right? The average is Did I get out of Kenya? No problem, but yesterday, I had a big problem when I entered Uganda. This is the main topic I want to talk about today. Before I came to East Africa, I did it online I applied for an e-visa on the official website of Kenya. I got the electronic visas for three East African countries a general electronic visa. It’s for Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. It cost more than one hundred dollars. electronic visa. Anyone can apply on their official website. and there are no other prompts says that it can only be used in Kenya or Kenya and Rwanda only. or Rwanda. not to Uganda. but their official website says that the e-visa can be used in all three countries. I just mentioned Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. So I went ahead and applied for it. and paid the fee. There was no problem entering Kenya. But when I tried to enter Uganda yesterday, there was a problem. The customs officer in Uganda said that we don’t recognize your electronic visa. I was shocked. How could you not recognize it? I applied for it on your Kenya official website. And since this visa is valid in three countries, it means that the three countries, Uganda and Rwanda, the governments of these three countries the foreign affairs departments must have reached an agreement, right? Otherwise, this policy of common visa this policy of universal visa for three countries. Right? And I have already paid over one hundred dollars. Yesterday, I arrived at the border city of Busia in Uganda, but they said they don’t recognize it. It’s okay if they don’t recognize it. He said if you want to enter our country, you must spend another fifty-five dollars you must buy a sticker visa. They said they don’t recognize electronic visas. we only recognize sticker visas. You say, friends, When you heard this, would you first think No, this must be a trick. It’s a trick on Chinese people, right? But I have a German passport. So this is not a problem of making things difficult for Chinese. It’s a hassle for all other foreign tourists in the world. or foreigners want to enter Uganda, Right? And then I also thought that don’t recognize this electronic visa, you want me to spend more money on a sticker visa, or paper visa, So I spend fifty-five dollars. whose pocket will the money go into? Is it going into the pockets of your customs officers? or into your Uganda treasury? Anyway, friends, in this situation, I will never compromise. It’s not about the money. Even if I have to spend one dollar to buy another another visa, I wouldn’t accept it. Because it’s a matter of principle. It’s not about money. Later, the customs officer was very angry when he saw me. I was really angry. Because the visa I applied for was definitely processed through the Kenyan official website. It’s an official document, right? It should be valid in all three countries. But why doesn’t Uganda recognize it? I asked them, They couldn’t give me an explanation. They just said they couldn’t recognize my e-visa. I was really angry. I told them directly that I said I disagree. I will never spend another fifty-five dollars to buy another so-called sticker visa. And then guess what they said? They said, Since you don’t admit it, we can’t do anything. We can only refuse you entry into Uganda. I thought, well, they can refuse if they want. I can just not go to Uganda. Later, they really refused me entry. Friends, I’ve traveled all over the world, I’ve been to fifty or sixty countries and regions. no country has ever refused me entry. and I had a valid visa. But Uganda refused me. Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world. You can see that Uganda, with an average annual GDP per capita of about one thousand dollars. one of the poorest countries in the world, refused me entry. and I had a legal visa. Well, friends, I will not compromise. And I think it’s a kind of corruption. I think maybe I’m wrong. They want me to spend more money. Maybe the money went into the pockets of customs officers. This was the first thought I had at the time. I don’t know if you think the same way. Because I did my homework online and I’ve heard many Chinese Chinese people said that they need to tip when entering Uganda. and so on. I didn’t really believe it at first. I thought that Chinese people the idea of avoiding trouble, or the idea of spending money to avoid disasters. Because most Chinese people go abroad, may not be particularly fluent in English, or not fluent in foreign languages. and afraid of any accidents. So they spend money. But I disagree and don’t support this practice. I think as long as we are right, we should fight for our rights, right? And we Chinese people have to tip in many countries. It’s because of our Chinese people’s idea that we have developed. It’s not just a problem in Uganda. I heard that when going to Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and so on. Chinese passport holders have to tip when entering. This is really a bad habit a very bad habit that we Chinese have developed. This has made many other foreigners fat. So we can’t complain we can’t complain about how foreigners treat us. It’s our Chinese who are being difficult. I think we have instilled foreigners Okay, let’s go back to Uganda. After I refused to pay, they really refused me entry. Then, a person from Uganda took me and my luggage and led me back to Kenya. I think they were from Kenya. I think they were relatively good. They handled the re-entry procedures for me. Then I entered Kenya. There was a little episode. Because I took a bus for many hours, so I was in a hurry. So I asked around. I think they were Kenyan staff. I asked the staff if there was a toilet here. and he said yes. but you need to pay. I couldn’t believe my ears at that time. Because in all countries around the world, as long as you are at the airport, customs, or public toilets, you generally don’t need to pay, right? But in Kenya, he said I had to pay. So I asked, How much does it cost? The person said it would cost one thousand. I heard that and was shocked. It was a bolt from the blue. You know that. which is equivalent to one thousand yuan. How much is it in Kenyan shillings? It’s more than fifty yuan. I believe Everyone would be shocked when hearing this. Is it more than fifty yuan to use the toilet? I asked again. Is it shillings? He said no. It’s the currency of Uganda. I said I didn’t have the currency of Uganda. I haven’t even been to Uganda. Then he said if it was local currency, it would be twenty shillings. Twenty shillings is much less. But even so, Twenty shillings is not cheap if it exceeds one yuan. Over one yuan. Because in Kenya, you know, every month, if they have a normal job, or full-time jobs, they earn about one thousand yuan per month. Two thousand is considered a high salary. It’s above average. It costs more than one yuan to use the toilet. I don’t know if it’s targeting me as a foreigner. or whether they were making things difficult for me. Anyway, I paid twenty shillings honestly. Then I used the toilet. I don’t need to describe the toilet. Anyway, I have seen all the so-called public toilets here. not those high-end places. are very difficult to enter. Well, I had to use the bathroom. Then after I came out, I said it was three or four in the morning. there was no village or shop nearby. at your customs place, how can I return I would go back to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Then the customs officer said there were buses. you can take it. Then he asked someone to take me to the place to take the bus. I carried my luggage. You don’t know that The customs place how bad the conditions are. Most of it was made of dirt and there were stones. I was carrying my suitcase and a backpack. So it was very difficult to walk. There was no way. I had to get through it no matter how hard it was. Then I took my luggage followed the so-called staff. The staff was in a dark place. There was no customs either. There was no light outside. It was very dark. Then I followed him and walked and walked. After walking about five hundred meters, he handed me over to another person. The other one looked a little drunk. I felt very unsafe with him. But there was no way. In this case, you have to bite the bullet you have to keep going. Then he said, follow me. and was slurring his words. I carried my luggage again. in this dark place, on the dirt road. and there were stones on the road. and kept walking forward. After walking about three or four hundred meters, he said this is the bus. and then he asked me to pay. Of course I didn’t. In this case, I said I need to confirm if this is the bus. There was a driver sitting inside the bus. I asked him if it was okay, since it was an English-speaking country. so there was no problem in communication. I asked him I asked if his bus was going to Nairobi. He said yes. Are you the driver? He said yes. I was relieved. Then I took my luggage and got on the bus first. After getting on the bus, I felt relieved, right? Then I asked how much it cost to Nairobi. He said fifteen hundred. which was a very reasonable price. which was much lower than I expected. Because when I came from Nairobi in this direction, I paid three thousand five hundred for so-called VIP seats. Three thousand five for the way here, and only one thousand five for the return. I was secretly happy. I thought it was so cheap. I paid one thousand five hundred yuan to him. The other party also wrote me a receipt. Then I sat down. At this time, the person who led me said, please give me money. I said what money? Because I thought that it was the customs officers and the public bus they were collaborating. to take care of us foreigners. But I didn’t know it wasn’t like that. Everyone wanted to take money from us foreigners. to deduct money. But at this time, my mood was already at its worst. I was really in a terrible mood. because I was refused entry by the customs in Uganda. I wasted my money and took a dozen hours’ bus to come here, right? Now I have to take another bus a dozen hours’ bus ride and then return to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. So my mood was naturally at its worst. At this time, he still asked me for money. I refused. Of course, I felt sorry for him, and poor. But at this time, I really didn’t want to any idea of giving a tip. so I refused. Later, seeing that I didn’t mean to tip, and gave up. and gave up, and then got off the bus disappointedly. At this time, I felt a little sorry for him. I checked my phone and it was already four o’clock. Then I asked the driver when he would drive. The driver said it would take about half an hour. So I could only wait patiently. Then it was half past four. and he did drive a little bit later. to the next stop. After driving for about an hour, there was a stop. Then he stopped. He stopped but refused to drive. About an hour and a half later, I was really impatient. But it was useless to get angry at this time, right? He couldn’t drive just because of you. I guess that maybe because there weren’t many people in the car, that is, there weren’t many passengers. He might want to wait for more people to pick up more passengers before driving. I can understand that. It was probably around six or seven o’clock later. It was getting dark. When we were driving, but it was already quite bright at seven o’clock. Then he started driving slowly again. He kept driving like this. I saw potholes on the road. And along the way, I also saw some local customs, and the scenery, and so on. Some places were nice, and quite beautiful. But most of it, I think, is a bit boring. And then I saw their own people, the Kenyans, who live in rural areas, they are relatively poor. And there was a lot of garbage on both sides. This poverty is reflected in For example, most of them walk. maybe they can’t afford a motorcycle. Most of them buy motorcycles for transportation. Why? Because they because not many Kenyans have transportation. The means of transportation are buses. or walk on their feet. They buy motorcycles to carry passengers. I also found their houses are very simple. How simple is it? they just use some sticks to build a frame, and then use wet mud to fill it. There is a Chinese saying that is called mud can’t hold up the wall, right? Seeing this, I think of this idiom. In the rural areas of Kenya, they use some sticks to build a frame horizontally and vertically. and then paste the mud on it. This is what they call a wall. It’s pasted on all sides to form four walls, right? And then their roof, which is called tile. is made of tinplate. This becomes a house. It becomes a rural villa. So, compared to us, at least in our Guangxi and many provinces and cities across the country, are all reinforced concrete buildings. In Guangxi, we usually build two to four floors. This is normal. they use wooden sticks to make a frame, and then use the mud to paste the wall. and then tin houses. The construction cost is about five percent of ours. I think if Chinese people it’s easy to build houses like Kenya. I think in China, cowsheds and pigsty may be better than here. Another phenomenon I observed is that in rural areas, except for the main road, are paved with asphalt or cement. the others are are dirt roads. And the soil here is more sticky. If it rains heavily, how difficult it is for them to walk. how difficult it is for them to go out. I think of my childhood. when we were kids, there was also such a situation in our mountainous areas. Because China was very poor at that time, so when going out, especially when it rained, it was a big headache in the countryside. If you had a bicycle, it has a rain shield, right? I was particularly impressed when I went out. between the fender and the tire, there was a lot of mud. It made you you couldn’t even ride the bike forward. So I used a stick or branches to remove the mud to dig it out bit by bit. This is my impression when I was a child. I believe that if it rains in Kenya, they are just like us in China today. like in the seventies and eighties. Of course, now in the capital of Kenya, there are many cars, and some tall buildings, right? and mobile phones. In this regard, it must be better than China. But I think the whole country, I’m just looking, is just a cursory glance. After all, I have only been in Kenya for a dozen days. I think the overall development level of the country is similar to that of China in the early nineties. I think some aspects may be equivalent to the eighties in China. But overall, is equivalent to the level of China in the nineties. That is their development level. there is a thirty to thirty-five-year gap with China. But China has a complete industrial chain and a complete industrial system, right? But Kenya doesn’t have it. So I think If the thirty-year gap is still small, from the perspective of industry, it may be forty or fifty years behind it may be forty or fifty years behind China. Yes. Of course, my view may be immature. Friends who have been working here for a long time may have more say. Okay, friends. Today, I want to talk about the main topic of this episode. this time, I have obtained a general visa for East African countries, general visas for Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. but I tried to take the long-distance bus I wanted to go to Uganda. I was refused entry by the customs in Uganda. So I want to share this with you. I don’t know how many people in Kenya or working in East Africa, and want to go to Uganda, have the same experience as me. Please tell me in the comment section. Okay. Do you think it’s the Kenyan customs are particularly corrupt and want to extort money from me? Okay, what do you think? That’s all for today’s topic. Thank you all. See you next time.

Before traveling to East Africa, I had obtained a common electronic visa for three East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda). However, when I entered via the land border at the small town of Busia between Kenya and Uganda, the Ugandan immigration authorities demanded that I pay an additional $55 for a sticker visa, claiming that Uganda does not recognize the electronic visa. I refused to make the second payment, and as a result, the Ugandan immigration authorities directly denied me entry.
