日本を自転車で横断するためにどれだけ食べるか!(かなりたくさんです…)
This is how much I have to eat in a day to cycle 80 miles across Japan. My plan for today is to cover about 130 kilometers from Sono to Shiraawa. So, I woke up bright and early from my shipping container hotel and made a quick convenience store stop for a little pre-re appetizer. Today, I went with this shelf stable sausage roll and a Boston cream donut type of creation. It’s always hard to believe that I bought these in convenience stores. They taste kind of like B or Ctier bakery quality. Not bad. As I got moving, my first push of the day was super serene with some beautiful farmlands, empty rural roads, a rocket, the usual. Then for breakfast, I stopped at this randomly Beatles themed bakery called Penny Lane for a splendid little chocolate croissant, which was super moist and flaky on the inside and really jived with the darkness of the chocolate. Then I also got a prototypical Japanese cafe western breakfast set with this little lettuce salad, a couple of blocks of toast, yogurt, some onion soup, and tea, and bacon, sausage, and eggs. I was initially a little bit skeptical about the whole breakfast salad idea, but it actually has a nice little acidity that works really well with the spread. I’m on board. Then, as I kept on moving, I kind of had to rush through my next stretch of riding through some rolling fields and cattle farm so I could make it to this spot for lunch. And thank God I did. It was basically a little log cabin in the middle of farmlands for miles in every single direction. And the owner of this spot lives here and grows all of the produce they use for their meals. So, as soon as I sat down, the owner came out and hooked me up with some water and naturally a cup of loquats. I didn’t initially even know what these were, but they were straight up money. Kind of like a peachy plummyy type of vibe going on. Then she brought me out a garden salad with a homemade herbal dressing, and then a set with a pork chop, vegetable, bacon, pasta, some miso soup, and rice. The pork and both the chop and pasta used their own local meat that was marbled and juicy and had that kind of feeling that sticks to your teeth, but in the best way possible. As I was wrapping up, she offered me some coffee and herbal tea using the herbs she freshly picked from her garden. She could definitely tell I was loving life, so she doubled down and pulled out her stockpile of tea so that I could bring some home with me and also gave me my own bag of my sweet lowquats for the road. Then she tripled down because before I left, she asked me to come check out her garden and went plant by plant to pick me bunches that I could use for making tea of my own and even asked me to take a sip of her wellwater. rural Japanese hospitality is absolutely unmatched. Then next, I finally made my push into Shiraakawa City where I checked into my hotel for about 55 bucks a night and then bounced straight over to this little izakaya type of spot where I could grill my very own takoyaki. Not going to lie, I had absolutely no clue what I was doing, but the end result looked okay. Kind of. And to supplement the spread, I rounded things out with some gyoza and yaki tori. See you guys tomorrow.
