🚴♀️しまなみ海道・向島サイクリング完全ガイド🚲🌊🍊絶景・グルメ・お土産まで満喫ルート紹介!
Hello, everyone!
This time, we bring you a cycling tourism guide for Mukaishima Island, the gateway to the Shimanami Kaido! This island, easily accessible from Onomichi, is a paradise for cyclists. Its beautiful sea, scenic spots, and above all, the warmth of the locals are its charms. Here’s a special route to enjoy Mukaishima and some great deals! First, rent a bicycle near Onomichi Station. For beginners and tourists, we recommend electric bicycles with baskets. They can carry your luggage and make hills a breeze. To cross from Onomichi to Mukaishima, you take the ferry. There are two boarding points: the station ferry and the Onomichi ferry from Tōdō. Both cost just 110 yen one way (adults and bicycles included), making them very affordable. Payment is due upon boarding, so having small change ready will make things go smoothly. Cash only. After disembarking the ferry, it’s finally time to start cycling! The Shimanami Kaido route features a blue line painted on the road surface, so use it as your guide as you proceed. Just be careful not to go the wrong way. The ferry terminal area is conveniently located near supermarkets, drugstores, and other useful facilities. Be sure to complete any necessary shopping in this area. Please be very careful in this area as there is heavy traffic from cars and motorcycles. Riding that bicycle westward for about 10 to 15 minutes, you’ll come upon a sea as calm as a river.
Up ahead, the striking red arch of the Mukaishima Bridge comes into view. Along the roadsides in this area, you’ll find scattered citrus fruit stands where you can purchase seasonal mandarins and lemons. We ship nationwide, making it perfect for souvenirs and gifts. Citrus is now in peak season. We hope you’ll give it a try. Just in time, the sale of mandarin oranges has begun. The sea to the right is called the Miyukiseto. You can also cross the red Mukaisima Bridge to go to Iwashijima Island. Continuing onward, you’ll arrive at Mukaishima Rest Area, popular with cyclists. This spot offers a breathtaking view of the Innoshima Bridge up close.
You can also walk down to the nearby sandy beach, making it perfect for enjoying the seaside scenery or taking photos. Gazing at the sea with a citrus fruit in hand is truly
a luxury unique to Mukaishima. As I went to get back on my bike, a black cat appeared. Why is it here? Beyond the rest area, the road offers breathtaking views all the way. Looking up from beneath the Innoshima Bridge, it looks like this. On a nice day, it’s also nice to go down to the sandy beach. To cross the Innoshima Bridge, please turn left here. From Mukaishima Island, you can also cross over to neighboring Innoshima via the Innoshima Bridge. You can safely and securely access it by cycling along the dedicated bike path under the bridge. If you visit on a weekday, there’s also an aquarium on Innoshima that offers free admission. This hidden gem offers a close-up view of the fish of the Seto Inland Sea, making it a great spot for a quick detour. After returning from Innoshima, why not take a trip around the entire coastline of Mukaishima Island. In the Mukaihigashi area on the east side, there is another ferry landing, making it an ideal spot to relax while gazing out at the sea. Follow the blue line on the road. Cycling the Shimanami Kaido is best on Sundays when there are fewer cars. Right in front of us is the filming location for the movie “The Transfer Student.” Mukaishima is dotted with numerous filming locations from director Nobuhiko Obayashi’s movies. If you research in advance, you can also enjoy combining visits to filming locations. However, it has already been 40 years since the film’s release, and few places retain their former appearance; the scenery and buildings have changed significantly. You can see scenery typical of the Seto Inland Sea from the coastal road. Turn left here to return to the central area or the ferry terminal. Continue straight ahead toward Uta Port in the Mukaihigashi area. Follow the blue line on the road. There is one steep hill. Cycling down a long downhill slope. When you see the sign for Uta Port Ferry Terminal, please turn right. When you see the sea, the Uta Port Ferry Terminal is just ahead. In the Mukaihigashi area, there is another ferry landing, making it an ideal spot to relax while gazing out at the sea. After being soothed by the beautiful scenery, it’s time to head back to the central area for lunchtime!
We’ll also introduce some wallet-friendly, belly-filling gourmet spots on Mukaishima. What if you only had 1,000 yen on a budget trip?
Even then, Mukaishima is still plenty of fun! The best way to spend your time here is, quite simply, to pick up seasonal citrus fruits as souvenirs and enjoy lunch at a local shop. Then I thought up a plan to buy bento boxes, bread, and milk at the local supermarket and have a picnic by the sea, all for under ¥1000. Below are some reasonably priced food spots. Supermarket ‘Every’ bento boxes and ¥100‐ bread Okonomiyaki from ¥550 yen Baked Sweet Potatoes from the Supermarket from ¥200 Mukaishima Udon from ¥520 My Recommendations
◎ Seasonal Citrus: ¥300
◎ Every’s Twisted Bread: ¥100
〇 Mukaisima Okonomiyaki
〇 Supermarket Roasted Sweet Potatoes Finally, most of the cycling routes along the Shimanami Kaido are shared with cars and motorcycles. Don’t go too fast, wear your helmet, and enjoy yourself while putting safety first. Enjoy your cycling
