Comment le Mossad a traqué et capturé Adolf Eichmann en Argentine ? – Documentaire – CF
Which symbolized the Holocaust. He was a methodical murderer,
a Holocaust n*zi monster. He is unequivocally guilty
of the murder of 6 million Jews. The Mossad learned that Adolf
Reichmann was living in Buenos Aires. We were sure it
was Reichmann. Mossad agents were taking a huge
personal risk by participating in this operation. The orders were clear. Capture him and bring him back
alive to Israel. April 1960, in Argentina. Adolf Eichmann, one of the most notorious
Nazi war criminals, lives incognito with his family near Buenos Aires. Eichmann and his family lived
on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, on Garibaldi Street. But a Jewish piano tuner,
whose daughter briefly dated Eichmann’s son, alerted
Israeli intelligence. The man called the architect
of the Final Solution is now in the Mossad’s sights. According to the information we had,
he was living in Argentina under the name Ricardo Clement. He lived in San Fernando, a suburb of Buenos Aires, in an isolated house. Why were we so skeptical? There was no electricity or water. We wondered why a man
like Eichmann lived in such a rat hole. Mossad agents believed it
impossible for Eichmann, an SS lieutenant colonel and
murderer of 6 million Jews, to live in such a modest bungalow. It was unimaginable for them. We were convinced that this was not
the right person, that this was not Eichmann. Zvi a haroni. A Mossad spy goes
to Argentina to investigate. He recruits a volunteer on site. Aaroni opted for a
bold tactic. He sent one of his recruits to meet
the suspect at his house to discuss purchasing land. We had hidden a
camera in his controller. When a button on
the handle was pressed, the camera took pictures. This way we could take
pictures without the man knowing. This is how we
got the photos. He took pictures of the man he
believed to be Eichmann to compare with old photos of Eichmann. His left ear was
like a fingerprint. We had a picture of the man’s left ear
and a picture of Eichmann in his SS uniform
showing his left ear. We were almost certain it was Eichmann, but not 100%. Aharoni returns to Israel to show
evidence to Mossad director Yisser Harel. Harel immediately brought them
to Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. Ben-Gurion saw an opportunity. He was afraid that young Israelis
would forget what happened to the Jews, that the whole world would forget. Ben-Gurion ordered Yisser Harel
to bring Adolf Reichman to Israel for trial. The plan combines simplicity and boldness. A team of secret agents will kidnap
the war criminal and smuggle him to Jerusalem,
more than 14,000 kilometers away. A rel chooses the man who has
the talent and the aplomb to carry out the operation. Mossad Commander Rafi Eitan. I assessed how many people
I needed and started choosing them. Rafi and Tan formed a
classic team, like the ones you find in spy movies or novels. Each person was chosen for their
expertise, whether they were a forger, a disguise specialist,
or an excellent logistician. These were not elegantly dressed James Bonds
. They were ordinary individuals who would
not be noticed in a crowd. And that was their strength. For agents,
the mission is also personal. Adolf Eichmann is the man who made
sure the death trains arrived on time. He participated in the deportation
to the gas chambers of millions of Jews from all over occupied Europe. History calls Eichmann
the architect of the Final Solution. He was very gifted. Most of his agents’ relatives were
probably killed by this man’s work. He was an extremely fanatical,
relentless and efficient n*zi. Towards the end of the war,
he told a fellow Nazi that he would die happy to have killed 6 million Youth. Its role was to isolate
Jewish populations in ghettos and eventually send them to
extermination camps, such as Auschwitz. He seemed to be running a business, a business of death. He was a specialist
in the Jewish question. He knew the subject well. He was a bureaucrat,
but he also went into the field. He was going to observe
the techniques used. The gas vans,
the mass executions, he saw it all. He was a n*zi, a
despicable murderer, there’s no doubt about it. It was a
crucial operation for the Mossad. If the mission were successful, Mossad
would be recognized for its true worth. It was an extremely
reckless operation for the Israelis. They wanted to show the world that
Israel should not be underestimated, that the Israelis had a long arm. Two weeks after seeing the photos
of Eichmann, a reconnaissance team was sent to Argentina. The agents take different flights
and do not all arrive on the same day. We were traveling with fake passports,
in languages we did n’t speak, in an unknown country, and we
had no one to turn to. Mossad logistics specialists
prepared our schedule, our route to Argentina,
the hotels we would stay in, and the identity we would use. They need to confirm that the man in the
photos still lives at the same address. Surveillance specialist
Abraham Bendor heads towards Garibaldi Street. I wanted to see the places and the surroundings. Sui was driving and I was next to him. By chance, we arrived just
as the bus was passing. Suddenly, I saw a man walking. I told Zvi that it was the man
in the photo, that it was Eichmann. Zvi was so excited that he
braked abruptly. We had a crappy car
and the brakes were squealing. I told him not to do that anymore
because he might alert the man. When Sfi braked,
I thought he could never be part of my team
because he was too nervous. Eichmann walked 150 meters. He turned left,
and 15 minutes later, he turned left again towards his house. It was the only house anyway. We watched the house
for several days. He noted
exactly what Aichman did: what time he got up, what time he left for work,
which bus he took, how long he stayed at work,
what time he came back, what he did when he got home, and what time he went to bed. A single note is sent by Telex
to Mossad headquarters in Israel. Carrot was a code
that meant many things. One, we found the man
from the photos brought by Parsui. Two, the situation on the ground
makes kidnapping possible. And three, we will continue to
monitor the house. In Jerusalem, the head of the Mossad gives
the green light to Operation Eichmann, the capture of the man who organized
the genocide of European Jews and his return to Israel to be
tried for his crimes. I was 14 years old when I
left Czechoslovakia. We went to Hungary, then in
1944 we were deported to Auschwitz. My whole family, my mother, my sister,
my father, my grandfather, my aunt and I, we were on the train. We were afraid, we were hungry,
we were cold, we were humiliated. We were sent to Auschwitz
to be exterminated. After decimating the Jewish population
of Poland in 1944, Eichmann set about sending the 700,000 Jews of Hungary to their deaths. In short, every Hungarian Jew,
or any Jew who has roots in Hungary, has a parent or ancestor who was
killed by Adolf Eichmann. The door opened,
and before we could see anything, we heard
a German Shepherd barking. I couldn’t believe we
were in this absolutely horrible place. The Mossad director knows that a request
to Argentina for Eichmann’s extradition would probably be refused and
the nazi would take advantage of the situation to disappear. When the team assigned to the abduction
arrived, they had their work cut out for them. It was not enough to hit the man
on the head, put him in a car, and then on a plane to Israel. It was necessary to find a place
to sequester him if necessary. So it was necessary to rent a house. But renting a house
in Argentina in the 1960s was not easy. He had to sort out a lot of details
that you don’t think about right away. This task falls to the master
of disguise, Yitzhak Necher. Posing as tenants,
they found a villa an hour’s drive from Buenos Aires. They chose this house
because the neighbors were far away. There was an enclosed courtyard and several
rooms to accommodate all the agents. It was an ordinary house in a
quiet neighborhood near Buenos Aires. That was the first step. Now it was time to get
Eichmann out of the country. It was Harrell who came up with the idea of taking
Eichmann out on an El Al plane. However,
Israel’s national airline does not fly to Buenos Aires, with one exception. Fortunately, and this is one of those
unexpected coincidences, it was the anniversary
of the founding of Argentina. The Israelis had announced that they
wanted to send a delegation of dignitaries to participate in
the celebrations. The Argentine government
agreed to a special flight, and it was on this plane that they would
take Heichmann out of the country. So the scientists of the operation were
based on the arrival and departure dates of the plane that came to Buenos Aires. The plane is due to arrive on
May 12 and depart the following day. The agents therefore have one week
to remove the war criminal. The countdown has begun. We saw him every day at the same time, except Sunday. The same bus at the same time,
it was always the same. Eichmann was a man of routine. He liked to get off the 202 bus
at the same time every day when he came back from the large
car factory where he worked. The road near his house
was not very busy. No one walked there
and few cars used it. Garibaldi Street, in 1960,
was the worst street in the entire southern hemisphere for kidnapping. She was fully exposed. Eichmann’s house was
a simple cement block. It was like putting
a die on a billiard table. There was nothing around. So if you were walking around
and looked weird, you would get noticed right away. It was a bad place for a
kidnapping, but he had no choice. So we made up our minds. After observing his habits,
we agreed that the easiest way to kidnap him was to do it
as he got off the bus while he was walking home. Orchestrating a kidnapping so that everything goes smoothly is an art. Basically, the plan was that at
nightfall, when Eichmann got off the bus on his way home from work
and turned down the small path toward his house, he would catch him. Zvi Malkin had to walk between home
and the bus, while Reichmann walked between the bus and his home. They were to meet
two-thirds of the way there. Zvi Malkin was to say to him, “Momentito,
signore, I would like to ask you a question.” This was
our plan from the beginning. To perfect the sequence of movements
, we practiced it about 300 times. They practiced pushing Eichmann
into the car, pinning him to the floor, and driving away. We wanted to do it in 20 seconds. They walked the route they were supposed to
take on several occasions, in case they were chased by the police. We didn’t have weapons,
because they could incriminate us. Why take up arms? We didn’t intend
to kill anyone. We knew that the only enemy we
might have to face was the Argentine police or army. So we didn’t need weapons. We took that risk. Mossad agents were taking a huge
personal risk by participating in this operation. Foreign spies arrested in Argentina
in 1960 were not executed, but they languished in prison
for many years. Of course, one would deny the existence
of the mission in Israel, as in most
traditional spy stories. The risk was considerable. Since the war,
Argentina has provided refuge to several high-ranking Nazi officers
like Eichmann. There was a network set up
by Juan Perón, the president of Argentina,
to bring n*zis into Argentina. It was well known in the
underground circles of former Nazis that if they reached Argentina,
the government would welcome them. After the Allied victory in 1945,
Eichmann was wanted and fled. Eichmann went to Hamburg and
then settled as a lumberjack in a small town called Everson. Then the
logging company went bankrupt. He then used an old Nazi guide
to operate a chicken farm, and he managed to turn it into
a fairly profitable business. But in 1950, fearing
capture, Nazi sympathizers within the Catholic Church helped Eichmann
travel to South America from the port of Genoa,
under the pseudonym Ricardo Klemen. The route he took
was very busy. It was an underground network. Eichmann received all the documents
he needed. An entry permit to Argentina,
an exit permit from Italy, etc. Eventually,
Eichmann boarded a ship third class that would take him
to his new life in Argentina. Eichmann wasn’t the only
Nazi officer to end up in Argentina. There was practically
a tradition of welcoming n*zis. Some provided capital,
others their technical expertise. Former n*zi officer takes jobs. From running a laundry
to raising rabbits, but nothing works. He finally found a stable job
in a Mercedes-Benz factory. While the military dictatorship in Argentina
welcomes n*zis like Reichmann, it wouldn’t be so welcoming
of a team of Israeli spies on its territory. To throw off the authorities,
the agents create a series of license plates for the vehicles they will
use to escape. We had three
license plates. But not the rotating system you
see in James Bond movies. The plates were placed one on
top of the other so as not to waste time, as we were changing them. It was faster than in the movies. For each plate, we had
the corresponding documents. In Argentina in the 1950s,
rental cars were not the fancy new sedans they are today. They were in a sorry state. There was always a risk
that they would break down. These cars were
in very poor condition. We even had to push one. Of course, anything could happen. Operation Heichmann
enters the active phase. From the moment Eichmann went into
hiding after the war, he remained constantly on guard. He was wary of every footstep he
heard behind him, of every person who came towards him. The agents feared that if they let
another day pass before the operation,
that would be the day Eichmann would realize he was being
followed and disappear. There was a risk that he would try to
escape, to run away, it was a real danger. Either way, the time for action had come. We had no means
of communication, no weapons. You could say it was a
crude operation, but sometimes crude operations
work best. On May 11, 1960, Operation
Adolf Eichmann began. Mossad agents arrived
after dark, about 30 minutes before Eichmann’s scheduled return,
to put the cars in place. They had two cars,
one to capture them, and another as a reserve car to
intervene in case of a police pursuit. There were four officers
in the first car. They were the kidnapping team,
the ones who would catch him. They got out of the car and
pretended to look under the hood. They were tinkering with the engine. This is the classic cover. Pretend the
car has broken down. And they waited. When the bus arrived,
they waited for Eichmann to get off. But he wasn’t there. The agents couldn’t believe it. The only night he didn’t arrive
on the 7pm bus was the one we chose to pick him up. The men were extremely tense. Every night, Eichmann took the same
bus, except on the night of the kidnapping. They waited and waited. Eichmann was not coming. About twenty minutes passed. The agents were becoming
increasingly nervous. Someone rode by on a bike
and asked questions. A passerby asked us some questions. The men were very tense. Zvi Aaroni asked me if we were leaving. I say, we stay. It should be remembered that
Garibaldi Street was entirely exposed. Their presence did not go unnoticed. Suddenly another bus arrived. A familiar figure about five
feet tall got out and started walking. It was Adolf Eichmann, there
was no doubt about it. We saw Eichmann approaching
and the operation began. When he arrived with his
flashlight, I blinded him with the headlights to prevent him from seeing the other car.
He was walking towards them. Malkin, one of the agents,
told him the only sentence he knew in Spanish. One moment. Momentito, señor. I would like to ask you something. He tried to get
Eichmann’s attention so that he would approach them. But Eichmann was afraid. Eichmann reached into his
pocket as if reaching for a weapon. Malkin jumped on him. He grabbed him by the neck instead
of covering his mouth. He was trying to still
the hand that was in his pocket. So Eichmann could shout. He started screaming and I made
a lot of noise with the engine. To cover his screams. Malkin grabbed Eichmann and in their
struggle they fell into a ditch. We jumped on his legs,
his stomach, his head. Then we pushed him into the car. They ordered him to be silent. It was the first time a
Jew had given an order to Eichmann. Moshe Tavor sat in the front seat,
Zviaroni was already behind the wheel and the engine was running. I was in the back and had
his head on my lap. We hid it with a blanket. Then Zviaroni told him in German, if you value your life, stay calm. He continued, you must cooperate with
our people, otherwise we will kill you. Eichmann then said in German,
I submit to my fate. Hachman was in the car. I was driving towards our hideout. No one spoke. I had put my hand over his mouth. He was silent. After two kilometers, we
changed the license plate. They were Argentinian license plates
that we had forged. This was to prevent the cars from
arousing suspicion. We had to change them
in seconds. Garibaldi Street was very far from our
house, and they drove rented Argentinian cars in very poor condition. If they broke down and a
police officer came to their aid, they were. Cooked. We passed through
police and army checkpoints. A policeman stopped me. He said nothing and I said nothing. They saw the plates on the car and let us pass. The nerves were palpable during
the journey, but they finally arrived safely. They had Eichmann. We put on his
glasses so he couldn’t see us. We didn’t say a word to him, we did
n’t talk to him, and neither did he. We undressed him to make sure he was
n’t concealing a weapon or something. Razor blade for suicide. The team doctor examined him
to confirm that his heart was fine. A kidnapping is
a very stressful event. Since then, they were 90% certain that it
was Eichmann, but not 100% certain. They had to make sure they hadn’t
kidnapped the wrong person. Before going to Argentina,
we studied the SS file on Eichmann that we had in our archives. We knew his height,
his facial scars. These details helped us confirm
his identity before speaking to him. One of the agents, followed to Ronnie,
interrogated Eichmann to establish exactly who he was,
what exactly he had done, etc. I asked him his name,
he answered Ricardo Clement. I said, “Is that your real name?” ” He didn’t want to answer. Zwi is a very methodical interrogator. He can drive someone crazy by
repeating the same question over and over again very slowly. Ricardo Clement is your real name. What was your name before? He said Otto Henninger. Otto Henninger was the name he
used in Germany after the war. The agents know
Eichmann’s SS identification number. They discover a scar
where his SS tattoo should have been. Eichmann burned it at the end
of the war because he knew the number could be used to identify him. Zwi asked him if he had
been in the SS, he said yes. He asked him for his SS number,
he gave him Eichmann’s number. So he couldn’t say his
name was Otto Henninger, even though he knew Adolf Eichmann’s number. He wasn’t a genius,
he made a mistake. Eichmann then understood
that he had lost the game. In ten or fifteen minutes, he confessed that he was Adolf Eichmann. We were very happy that we had kidnapped
the right person because we were not absolutely convinced of it. I asked him what role he
played in the Holocaust. Of course, he denied everything. He denied everything. You might think a monster
like Eichmann would have an impressive physical presence, but he was
a meek, pathetic little man. Yet, he was the one who organized
these large-scale murders. I hate trains.
When I hear a train, I am transported back to 1944 on the journey to Auschwitz. We had to jump off the train. There was a soldier. People were queuing. One line went to the left
and another to the right. We went to the right,
while the old people went straight to the gas chambers. I never saw my grandmother again. I didn’t see her leave. Thank God. He always deliberately separated
the families, my aunt and I on one side, my sister and my mother on the other. That was the last time I saw them. The mission has
gone perfectly so far. But the Argentine authorities delayed
the arrival of the special plane from Israel that was to take Eichmann out of the country. The team found itself
faced with a problem. They were doomed to stay in this
house with this monstrous character thousands of miles from home. The risks were great. It was far from an ideal situation. Mossad agents holding Adolf
Eichmann are facing a setback. They thought they would spend two
or three days in this house. But the delay of the special El Al flight
forced them to stay there for more than a week. We knew the plane would arrive in Argentina on May 20 or 21. There wasn’t much to do
until the plane that would allow them to escape carried them across the Atlantic. They were locked in the house. Like anyone who has to
live confined in one place during a very stressful time, several
members of the team were arguing. Inside the house,
they were afraid that people would come and attack them, whether it was the police, Eichmann’s friends, or his family. His family was looking for him everywhere,
along with friends and n*zi sympathizers. The risks came mainly from the
German community in Buenos Aires. The quieter it is, the more we worry. Rafi was in charge and
had the most on his shoulders. He thought there was no way the
n*zis or his family weren’t looking for him. He was very worried. It was a trying time. What made matters worse
was that he didn’t want to lose sight of Eichmann, as he might try to commit
suicide or escape. What was particularly unpleasant
for the officers was that they even had to go to the toilet with him. It is a test for a Jew to clear the name of
someone who murdered 6 million of his people. It would have been
easier to kill Eichmann. But he had to bring him back for his trial. All the men in the house,
although some of them were Holocaust survivors,
all recognized the importance of bringing Eichmann back to Israel alive. They knew it, they understood it,
they agreed with this idea. The agents forced Eichmann to sign
a statement stating that he was returning to Israel of his own free will. If the Argentine authorities were to
arrest them, it might be the only thing
that could save the agents. Eichmann tried to make them understand
that as a German citizen, he should be tried in Germany. But he kept telling him he would go
to Israel, and they convinced him to sign. He gave me a letter which he signed. I have it here. It says, “I, the
undersigned Adolf Eichmann, hereby declare that I am
ready to go to Israel to relieve. My conscience.” He said he understood what was going to happen to him and was ready to face his destiny. Eight days after Eichmann’s kidnapping,
the El Al plane finally landed in Buenos Aires. 24 hours later,
the last and most dangerous phase of the mission begins. The way they got
Eichmann out on that El Al plane was surprisingly clever. They decided to disguise
Eichmann as a flight attendant. We had a doctor with us and he gave him an injection. They were going to
pretend he was drunk. They left the house. They finally arrived at the airport
and headed to the area where only crew members are
allowed to go. A slightly comatose Eichmann
accompanied them. They took him out and helped him
up the steps of the plane, in his uniform. Then we waited for
permission to take off. The diplomats had
already gotten off the plane. The only passenger returning to Israel,
apart from the crew and Mossad agents, was Adolf Eichmann. An hour before takeoff,
the agents revealed to the crew that they would be escorting
Adolf Eichmann out of the country. The agents posed
as Israeli diplomats and crew members on leave. Even once Eichmann was comfortably seated
in his first-class seat, they were not yet
out of the woods. Argentine immigration officials
boarded the plane, as they are entitled to do. They wanted to check passports. They went between the seats
and checked passports. Eichmann had one under
a false name, of course. An Argentinian asked what he had. The Israelis replied that he was
drunk, that he had partied, that in Buenos Aires there were
too many dances and too many girls. The Argentinian found the situation normal. He was surely not the first
drunken flight attendant he had encountered. They got out of the plane,
then the stairs were removed. They were taxiing to the runway
when suddenly a control tower told them to stop,
as they no longer had permission to take off. Imagine this moment. They had Eichmann and they
were banned from flying. So they wondered
what was going on. Moments before takeoff,
the plane that was to take Eichmann to Israel was grounded. They said five minutes,
then ten minutes, then twenty minutes. We were very suspicious,
we were so tense. Had the authorities
learned that Eichmann was on board? Was the operation compromised? Issair Harel wanted to take off and risk
a response from the Argentine air force. An individual named Shaul Shaul,
the navigator, said, I’m going to go see what’s going on. Isser Harel then said to this navigator,
if you are not back in ten minutes, we will take off his roof. So he got off the plane,
terrified, knowing he might never see his country again. In the end, there was only one element missing from the flight plan. The navigator returned
and the plane was able to take off. We were very relieved when we
finally took off with Eichmann on board. The pilot announces that the plane has left Argentine airspace. It was a moment of celebration
in this mission. However,
their troubles were not over. At that time,
departing from Buenos Aires, it was necessary to refuel
in Recife, Brazil, cross the Atlantic to Dakar,
Africa, where the plane would refuel before heading to Israel. But the Israelis didn’t want to
stay in South America in case we were after them. They were therefore trying to cross
the Atlantic directly to Dakar without refueling. They were flying almost
dry when they landed. The whole world was stunned
by the news of Adolf Eichmann’s kidnapping. It was an extraordinary achievement
for Israeli intelligence to have secretly and discreetly captured an individual
more than 14,000 kilometers away. In many ways,
the Eichmann trial was a landmark. In fact, he integrated
the Holocaust into the culture. The trial reminded the world of
what happened during the Holocaust. It was the starting point
for accounts of the Jewish experience during the war. Without the trial, the Holocaust
might have been forgotten. Harrowing testimonies were heard
during the trial from those who had met Eichmann or from those
who had survived the camp. The scale and savagery of what
happened was movingly illustrated. Eichmann’s defense was the
tired and hackneyed defense of those who repeat “I was following orders.” Eichmann was found guilty,
which came as no surprise, and he was sentenced to death. When I heard that he had been
captured and tried, I was really happy,
because he was finally paying for what he had done. It was difficult to understand how
this man, with so little personality, could have been responsible
for the deaths of millions of people. I still don’t have an answer. The day before his hanging,
Aichman wrote letters to his family in which he declared how much he loved
Germany and that everything he had done, he had done for his homeland. He was taken out of his cell
and quickly hanged. He was cremated immediately. His ashes were placed in a bucket
which was put into a boat. The ship left the
Israeli coast and waters. They didn’t want
Eichmann’s ashes to touch them. They poured out the ashes,
but there was some left in the bucket. They rinsed the bucket
because they wanted to get rid of every last particle of Eichmann. Then they returned home. It’s a just ending.
