Day 5 – Aso Volcano Caldera to Taketa

[Music] Morning. Welcome to Ozu Mizu Sitrep. It’s Monday, Monday morning. Tim’s clamp issue is still unresolved. I’m on my way to a hardware store to see if we can get a hose clamp that will work. Tim’s not comfortable putting it on his bike. But I told him, I don’t care. I’ll put it on mine. Cuz the other alternative and what Tim wanted to do was take the train back into Kumamoto, which is 2 hours, and then back, which would end up costing us uh 4 hours, half a day waiting for this clamp. It’s really unfortunate cuz the one bikes, there’s a good bike shop here that would work. It probably has what it needs, but it’s closed today. It’s the one day one day of the week that it closes. So, I’m trying to make something work. We’ll talk. Stay tuned. All right. Welcome to Japanese Home Depot. I maybe maybe it’s not. It’s not looking very Home Depotish, but I did see some constructiony kind of stuff outside. Oh, look. They have tabies, so I always wanted a pair of these. Okay, here we go. Too small. Too small. This This could work. Couple of these. This could work. I’m what you call an optimist. It’s better than giving up a day of riding. Let’s take them home. Give him a try. There it is. I put it on my bike. Okay. So, we are riding. I’m on it. Uh the guy there, he helped me put it on. He had to had to work some some magic. He snapped he snapped a couple of them, tighten it up for me, which he was more than happy to eat the cost of, I guess, which was really kind, too. He said, “No, no, it’s it’s my fault.” Strangely enough, he’s like, “Why don’t you just go to the engine bike shop and get it fixed?” which is literally 30 second drive from our hotel. And then I showed him that it was closed today. And he’s like, “Oh, bad luck.” So, it’s not perfect. I’m not going to lie. It’s still swivels back and forth, but as long as it doesn’t go down, I’m happy to I’m happy to try it out. So, here we go. So the year is 1984 and you’re in Hizu, Japan, and you staying with your wife in the house and you guys need a little break time. You need a little time away from the kids and the mom, the mother-in-law, the father-in-law. Maybe you’re going to go stay here. Little room, little chair where you can purchase certain items. You can There’s the double door. So, you don’t ever have to see anybody. They leave. They can leave items here for you. And then you step inside to the romance. [Music] Picture a karaoke machine right there. You got beautiful bathroom. Oh, the lights are all off. There they are. [Music] Your lady friend is impressed. Now look at this. The stained glass window. Oh, wait. Let me turn it on for you. The stained glass window in the bathroom with the TV. With the TV. Make sure though that you push the yellow button before using hot water. Okay. [Music] Then when things really get ready, well, we got two beds in here cuz Brad and I shared the love hotel last night, but that’s where the magic happens. I can speak from a little bit of experience that in the past they put costumes in here that you can utilize. Welcome to the Love Hotel. Oh, one last thing. The secret escape out the back. downstairs to your awaiting car. There’s my lover. Okay, sit wrap. We’re down to two. Tim still doesn’t have the part. I went up look for it at the shop in front of this big [ __ ] helm. No luck. So, he is taking a taxi to a bike shop somewhere that’s just opened. And if that bike shop doesn’t happen, he’s got another bike shop that opens at 1 that he’s going to be able to go to. He left his bike locked up at the hotel. He’s going to taxi back hopefully with the part. If not, then this plan all goes to [ __ ] and then he’s going to catch up with us. We’re going to granny gear it up the volcano today. We stocked up on water and I got a dollar ham sandwich for a little bit of fuel. I remember now one of the biggest things used to piss me off about living in Japan is that they just randomly put wasabi and [ __ ] I [ __ ] hate wasabi. There’s wasabi in here which grossest. Maybe that’s why it’s a dollar. That’s why it’s a dollar. It’s so gross. It’s horrible. Like why would you ruin a sandwich with wasabi? Who does that? Anyway, this is a big push. It’s going to be the biggest climb of my life. I don’t know about you. Yeah, Brad’s got a little anxiety, but we’re going to go slow. We don’t like the idea of leaving Tim behind, but everybody seems to be I don’t want to say comfortable, but it’s kind of like our only option at this point other than we lose a day. Faith that it’s going to work out. We just have to have faith. Yeah. Okay. [Music] Okay. Well, let’s uh touch base again here. We stopped at the bike shop again on the way. It acted along our route, the one I went to this morning. and his the owner’s son was there and he was more than happy to help, but he couldn’t really assist us. He wanted to, but he’s not doesn’t seem like he’s a bike guy. So, we needed a little more help from his dad who was at a funeral unfortunately today. So, uh super helpful young guy, but just wasn’t meant to be. So, in the meantime, we climb on. We’re just going to granny gear it up. It’s a 10 kometer climb that is I don’t know. I can’t pretend to know the statistics, but it’s going to be basically 10 km of granny gear. Uh, we’re just I promise Brad we just go slow and take it slow cuz we don’t need to kill ourselves. It’s [ __ ] hot. We want to be useful at the end of this day and we want to make it without anybody getting sick or overdoing it. So, wish us luck. All right. Not good at the first bike shop. Just talks to the mechanics and we looked through their parts and they didn’t have the right size. A lot of the bikes here have these Manari style. These are all like apartment and even she had one but it was too small. So I don’t know if they’re like lowerend bikes use 26.8 C tube diameter. I looked at the part number. It was a 26.8. So, Fortunately, now I have to go to the next bike shop. It doesn’t open till 1. So, stay tuned. It happened. It happened. We’re coming. We’re on foot. Start saying for those of you It’s not that we couldn’t do it. Pedaling. Sometimes the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze. I’m gonna start making and this is a this is a long one. So, we’re gonna push on and we’re gonna walk on and we’re gonna hope that it gets a little better in sections. But right now, it’s just not worth it’s not worth ex overexerting ourselves in this heat just to be a maybe I don’t even know if we’d be any quicker if we were if we were riding right now than we are walking. We’ll see. All right. Well, I went to the first bike shop and they didn’t have the part and I got the taxi to wait for me out front and drove me to this next one. Easy bike ei. And they’re not open yet. So, I knocked on this lady’s door next door. It’s like an old lady. I had to use Google Translate. and she called the owner, but the owner didn’t answer. So, I don’t know. It’s like 12:30 right now. Here’s the part the question. Seat clamp. So, I went to tighten it in the dark last night and it wasn’t all the way down on the seat tube. Cracked right there. So, it’s pretty common size. I’m hoping they have it, but we’re just going to have to wander the streets and find something to eat. I guess it’s hot, but hopefully easy bike can come through. Not easy ebikes. All right, there’s shoulder having shoulder on the road and then there’s having like negative shoulder where where even the the car drivers don’t have road. This is one of the better parts. I mean you can see where I should be driving. Ow. Versus where I am forced to drive. That gets really complicated especially on these blind corners. because there’s some big trucks that go by on this road and they got to go wide as it is and then they got to go around us and then the vehicles on the other side also don’t have shoulders and it makes it uh some pretty interesting corners. Uh, couple moderately terrifying moments. Worst comes to worse, I guess I’ll just throw myself in the bush. Found this sushi place on Google. A couple steps from where I was was [Music] see if you guys can see this. This is a closeup of a This is your kind of standard Japanese spider. I don’t know if you can see it. [ __ ] Is that big? It’s probably 5 in. Oh, horrible creature. Got a red bottom. Almost looks like a All right, first big switchback. You can look in the mirror right there and you can see there’s no cars coming. So, you just push along. Uh, we’re about halfway up the the climby part. So, if it’s a 10 km climb, that means we’ve climbed 5 km right now. And I am going to be optimistic and I’m going to say it’s getting a little cooler. Um, which is appreciated. Uh, I’m not going to say it’s cool. It’s just not scorching. Should have hitched a ride on that scooter. A big truck. Big truck. Big truck. Here we go. Nice. Holy cow. Okay. Flats by. Man, that sushi was amazing. It was 10 bucks for a lunch set. Now we’re seeing if this bike shop it’s 1:00, but doors aren’t open yet. Hopefully someone saying no cars here yet. Are people usually late for work in Japan or I feel like that’s not a thing here? Well, Brad and Colin are already riding. I have to try and catch up to them. Um, at this point, I’ll be lucky if I even get this part so I can ride. But well, it’s part of the adventure, I guess. Hopefully, it works out. Yeah, block of shame. Still the squeaky brake. I really do need new brakes on the front. Hard to source here. I thought there was enough, but well, there was. They’re fairly new, but we’ve also used a lot of brake here, and I keep them so tight. Not a lot of forgiveness in the way I set up my brakes. It’s kind of annoying. It’s my own fault. This is steep. [Applause] I don’t think it captures it properly on camera, but it’s steep. Oh, well, boys, bad news. Ebug, I just talked to the owner. He’s actually his English was very good. That door I knocked on was his mother. and uh he said, “Oh, I wasn’t planning on coming to open the shop till like 3:00 or 4:00.” I guess the Google hours are just suggestions, but it sucks that he has konas and speaks English and he’s helpful, but I don’t know if waiting here for another two hours. Maybe I’ll throw it out to you guys. What do you think? I can wait here for 2 hours and maybe he’ll come. Or I could get his mom to call him back and be like, “I’m going to wait. Please come as soon as you can.” Or I can hop in a train or taxi and go try a different one in the bigger city. What would you guys do? Let me know in the chat. It’s getting steeper. I don’t really know how to capture it on video, [Music] but I’ve never seen anything like this. All right. Another taxi here to the north to our third bike shop to try and find this part. But yeah, you never know what you’re going to encounter on these bike trips. You just got to be flexible and take the good with the bad and just work your way through it. But so far, two shops, two strikes. I’ve got this taxi which is hard for me to do cuz I don’t phone call thing planned and I don’t speak Japanese but I got a shop to call for me and when I got in this driver informed me that he forgot his cell phone at the last convenience store he was at. So I said let’s go. I’ll go with you. Let’s go get your phone and then you can take me to the bike shop and uh everything. Now we’re going to go find this phone and then hopefully the bike shop has the part and then I can go ride up the caldera, the volcano thing. But I don’t know. I just talked to Colin and it sounds like it’s a bit of a grind right now. I don’t know at this stage. It’s almost like 3:00 if if I’m going to be able to join the boys, which makes me sad. Sounds like it’s like super steep and they’re having to push. So, but I want to be up there with them. Look like it ends, man. It’s never ending. [Music] Oh, that [ __ ] squeak [Music] there. I had to back off the brakes when I lived in Japan. Another life. My friend Tony Estz, who I knew from Canada, he was traveling around the world. I don’t know what he was doing, but a couple other guys [Music] and uh they were they were in Japan and they started in the north and they were biking all the way down to the south which is super cool. Anyway, he passed by my place and uh the three of these guys. I just remember these three guys came in. I’d never I never quite smelled a smell like that before, but you can pretty much see it on me right now, I think. But anyway, these guys were pretty smart. They had two guys on bicycles and then they bought a scooter and the third guy is on the scooter. And what they would do is on the hills he would pull guy on the scooter would pull the other guys up. So he pull one guy up, go back, pick up the other guy, rinse and repeat. And then they’d all just kind of take turns jumping on the scooter and getting a rest. And they made an incredible time doing that because basically all you’re doing is downhills. You’re doing all downhill Japan cycling route. I’d give anything for a Tony and a scooter right now. Realize Brad’s quite a bit smarter than I am. He was walking on the left hand side of his bike. I’m walking on the right hand side of my bike. Well, the good thought there was that I wanted to protect my bike in case it got in case we got hit by a truck. At least my bike will be fine. Some of us weren’t that switched on, I guess. What do we got here? Can’t even read the signs. It’s so overgrown. It’s like a jungle. What does that say? The combo kuchi. So, got an intersection. Oh, there’s going to be a vending machine here for sure. Brad, what are you going to get? A spoinku. I’m going to get a pokari sweat, I think. Yeah, maybe two. Might even treat myself. Hey, if there’s a cold beer, it’s mandatory cold beer. Okay, update from the side quest. Here’s the bike shop that I just taxied to Kumamoto, second biggest city in Kyushu. Uh, third bike shop of the day. rolled up. Oh, we found the taxi driver’s phone. So, you guys would be happy to hear that. And rolled up, closed, and I’m just staring inside the window. And then all of a sudden, a guy on a bike rolls up and he asked us if he can if I can if he can help me. And he said he was the owner. And uh he opened up the shop and measured my seat clamp. figured out what size it was. But this place, it was like boxes and stuff everywhere. Started climbing on boxes and digging through stuff and pulled out a used seat clamp. That’s my size. And you charge him I tried to give him 20 bucks, but he charged me 10 bucks. So there it is. It looks like it’s going to fit the chair. Now I’m like I don’t know how 30k from where my bike is leaning against a fence with all my luggage attached. So let me know if that stresses you out. Um I’m fine. I’m just going with it. But now I’m going to find a train and take a train back to my bike. figure out where the boys are. And let’s be honest, I’m probably not going to ride today. I’m probably going to train to the next hotel. So, what all good drinkers should be doing is searching out for a place that sells beer. It’s probably what we need to do. What you know, it’s been a busy day. Busy day. Roadside. pit stop for a banana and an oniri. It’s basically jet fuel for highly tuned athletes like us. My ass is so sore from walking. I don’t know what else to say. Pretty much what we’ve been doing. Oh well. Some version of some coffee. Yeah. sign says. I’m just translating it. Keep going. You’re 10% there. You can do it. Sign says, “What are you doing?” You guys [ __ ] idiots. Wow. Just change, huh, that’s neat. We’re out of the woods and into the grasslands of Aso riding through the punpas grass. It really is really is beautiful here and it’s gotten significantly quieter the roads. All you hear now is my heavy breathing and the sweat hitting the road from my from my cycling jersey. What is this? Could this be What is this called when something doesn’t go uphill? Oh my goodness. After 10 kilometers, it’s not something that doesn’t go up. I just want to just really want to embrace this moment for a second. All right. I’m just looking forward to I’m looking forward to the downhill the breeze more than anything. That’s what I’m looking forward to. Yeah, I’ll just go just go slow and savor it. All right. So, maybe you’re back home and you’re wondering, “Ah, doesn’t look that steep. It’s It’s not really that steep. This is me paddling. This is the rate I’ve been going for the last 20 minutes or so.” Okay, I’m going to stop pedaling in three. One, two, three. [ __ ] stop. Just instantly. There’s no coast. There’s no coast. And it’s actually going to get steeper up here. Ready? One, two, three. Let’s push. Yeah, you could do this. By the way, look over there. You can see the volcano. It’s beautiful. Probably should stay on the right side of the road here. And by right, I mean left. The pom pom’s grass is absolutely gorgeous. Really nice spot. Can really start to see the caldera behind us, too. Not probably so much behind that grass now, but I promise you there’s a good view coming up. It’s going to make it all worth it. I hope there’s no such Oh, 9.7. Oh, I thought I said 97% gra. How do you do that? 9.7 down coming up. No, that’s uphill. That’s the first time they put a sign for the Put a sign there like Oh, now it’s getting steep. [ __ ] Oh, hey guys, just so you know, the road might start to get steep now. Jesus, that’s just cruel. That is just cruel. I’m not sad that we got some cloud cover now. That’s looks like that looks like everything else we’ve done. That’s so funny. Put one sign on at the very end. I mean, I hope it’s the very end, but just so you know, it might be steep. Okay, I’m guessing that by all the antennas and whatnot up here that we made it to the top, I’m guessing. So, we didn’t kill ourselves, but we’re done. Think we’re done. Never going to say that again. Well, Brad was right. We shouldn’t have said that was the end of the climb. There’s still been a lot. [Applause] This going to leave anything out. We don’t want to leave any climb untapped here today. There’s another foot somewhere we need to scale. We got to go there. Yeah. Yeah. What’s that? What’s that? You enjoyed that downhill, did you, Colin? We’re going to make you pay, [ __ ] We got to use that momentum, though. We’re going to make you pay. Here comes some more uphill. You thought it was over, didn’t you? We just do that to give you false hope. Surprise. Finally got a sudden burst of big big ring energy there. Love it. You know, it’s funny when you’ve been climbing uphill for so long, a steep uphill. When it kind of is less incline, it’s only like a 4% grade versus a 9% grade. It actually starts to feel downhill. Your mind starts tripping out because it’s all of a sudden it’s easier. like, “Oh, this is so easy. It must be downhill.” Oh, it’s great downhill. Anything less than 10% feels downhill. Off in the distance, you can see barely the steam coming out of the caldera, out of the uh the vent, I guess they call it. Brad and I were just talking about how it’s a lot cooler. This is the first time since we’ve been in Japan that we don’t feel hot. I’m not sweating and I’m not complaining either. This is uh this is nice and this might be our place. Okay, we’re going to stop, get a drink. I’m looking forward to that. Okay, well, made it to the Kaio Tawa Observatory. I guess you guys are going to have to decide for yourselves if it was worth it or not. My knees are not feeling very good right now, but it’s not every day you get to cycle up to the top of a caldera volcano. We were seeing earlier near the top over there, you could see every once in a while big puffs of steam or smoke or something clearly from volcano. It almost looks like there might be a vent coming out at the side there too right now. Oh, yeah. But every once in a while there’s been these puffs. It’s nice. Boys, girls made it back to the hotel. Trains, what time? It’s going to be 5 something. All day out here. Moment of truth. Is my bike still here in all my loot? There it is. I tucked it away. Look at this lock. Probably cut that with scissors if we had enough time. Nothing’s missing. There’s thousands of dollars of gear just sitting there. You know, put this on here. Looks good. I hope it fits. Welcome to the ASO Caldera sweep stakes. You are the winner of today’s contest. Another climb. However, generally speaking, it’s 600 m of downhill now overall. So, we’re we have for the most part reached the peak and the second half of this journey is going to be downhill, which is good cuz we’re the sun is only got about 2 and 1/2 hours of sun left and we have about 2 hours and 15 minutes of riding still. So, Work to be done. That is nice. So, we have turned just turned the corner. We are now headed east towards Pepu towards Shikoku. [Music] Little taste of home right there. 700 m. Turn left onto the road. Oh, thanks Siri. Crushing it today. [Music] Yeah, this descent has been pretty good. As it should be. We worked hard enough for it. We worked hard for it. It’s uh it’s nice. Feels pretty rewarding. Okay, tunnels get a little sketchy. Just uh driving through Teta right now. It’s a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful town. These kind of high mountains everywhere. Little houses nestled in tight against the mountains. It’s just incredible. It’s quaint little town. Yeah, like one kilometer left to go to the hotel. It’s been a long day. Hard day. Definitely the hardest day. We worked our asses off. Watch that truck, Brad. Wow, beautiful river gorge. Man, this town is fantastic. I’m not sure how riveting this series is or um who’s got this far, but if you have And you’ve been waiting for this moment to see it, dude. And you know what? I think it looks sick. And now I have a bike part from Japan on my bike to remember the trip every time I tighten it. I should put the seat on before I freaking celebrate. But the fact that it goes on and I have that many threads to close that piece of metal, I’m going to call it a win. But if I come back and I didn’t, then your boy’s going to be down bad. Or not. He’ll just go find a new one somehow. Yeah, that’s pretty satisfying. Worked. That ain’t going anywhere. Oh, man. I I don’t know. Just I feel classier now, too. Classier and well built. It’s probably the nicest thing on the bike this probably costs close to just shy of $200 in the taxis, buses, train. But boy, do I love it. And I can keep riding up these mountains. Hopefully the fellas are okay. Having a check in right now. Peace. What a town. Welcome to Teta, which might be might be my favorite little town we have stayed in. Okay. Bike’s packed up. I wasn’t really thinking straight. I think I’m tired, but I was all ready to go and I saw this young kind of school teenage I don’t know, high school kid and I’m like, “Yo, you speak English?” See, you said, “Am I tripping?” I didn’t say that. I was basically like, am I in the right spot? He’s like, you need to be over there. I was here. So, I would have gone back to where I just came from. So, track two, Titano. I should have saw that. I just wasn’t, you know, when you’re just beaten, you’re just not making good decisions. That’s me right now. Yeah. Let’s get on the right side. Wow, this place is amazing. It’s a highly rated little Actually, it’s a hostel that Brad found. And uh this lady, she’s so nice. She’s like, “Oh, here. Put your bikes in.” And she’s got this room at the back. Bikes have never been treated so good. Who knows how old this building is, but it’s kind of spooky and wild, but fascinating at the same time. Oh, it’s like open air. Wow. Cool. Okay, the town of Teta continues to impress. This is our room Tim and I are sharing tonight. It’s got air conditioning. Um, it’s I don’t know how old this building is, but it’s incredible. I’m actually on my way out to the onen right now, so I’m just locking up. I’m leaving. Brad’s room’s right there. It’s got this amazing old floor, all this wooden stuff. A courtyard in there. I don’t know if you can see that or not. This place is amazing. Okay, there is uh our place. The lights on. This is Teta. Tea station is down at the end of the street. This town has such a great atmosphere. I’m just in love with this little town and this hotel. Everything about it since we pulled in. I can’t believe it. It’s so beautiful. It’s so quaint and quiet. The uh rock is lit up the mountain side. full moon tonight. I just realized I just realized it’s actually a waterfall coming down the side of the mountain, [Music] guys. I think I’m falling in love. This town is This town is too much. Ever got chocolate milk out of a vending machine before? After an onset? See how this goes. My feet are too big to even fit in this thing. We’ll just start hitting buttons. There we go. Now we’re making something happen. Just start pushing buttons until something happened. Oh. Oh dear. [Music] Oh dear. Okay. Turns out that’s not chocolate milk. Huh. It’s good though. But it’s going to keep me up all night if I drink it. It’s coffee. All right, chat. It exceeded my expectations. This town. I don’t know. I might just stay, you guys. I might I might just I might just end my trip here and uh just retire. I don’t know. I have made many comments before about spending time in Japan, about the time I retire, spending a lot of time here. This could be the spot. I’m I’m not even joking with you. It’s incredible. If you ever come to southern Japan, you absolutely have to put Teta on the map on your on your on your must visit list. And when you do, give me a call. We go hang out at the onen and I’ll show you this incredible waterfall mountain thing behind the onen. [Music] Uh, sorry. I’m trying to go here. Change frame. That yellow. Oh, are we How long? I better tell 801 801. Now it is Oh, looks like I can wait here. back. Okay. Yeah. [Music] 1 2 Okay, I got two beside us. Okay, well they don’t build things. All right, so thought I was on the right train, but still okay. Miss you guys. Hopefully I’ll see you soon. All right, I got like 20 30 minutes to wait for this train. So, I saw this the light on over there and walked into that shop and thanks shout out Colin for teaching me some Japanese. I said Biru could decide and go ahead and to go. So, we’re not through the journey, but we got a beer and we’re going to get on the big yellow express real quick. See you very soon. Up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up up. Yeah, but I feel like we climbed kind of like right here. It felt it felt like that we just did that. But we did we went along this section and then Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. And then we went around and out. Amazing. Yeah. And then Hey. Hey. I found him. Come here. Come here. Damn it. Holy [ __ ] What an adventure, dude. Stop and look. Look at up here. Look at this place. I got the What the [ __ ] is this? Dude, this place is This is the best town I’ve ever been in my life in. Sorry, in Japan. Honestly, I’m not even kidding you. This place is pure fire, man. That rock, that’s a rock. That’s not a mountain. It blew off Mount Asel when when Mount Asel blew up. It [ __ ] shot all the way over there. It’s a rock sticking out of the ground. It’s [ __ ] You should The assho caldera is massive. And one day it just [ __ ] exploded the whole thing. There’s rocks scattered all over the country. I don’t even know where am I. This is a crazy place, man. I’m just get in here. I want you to admire that and what I’ve been through to get it. How much What’s the total purchase price? We We don’t want to talk about that. But shout out you guys. You guys [ __ ] did it. Like honestly, you guys, my taint tells the story. Let me tell I want to hear all about your ride. But you guys, you have to watch. You’re going to have to watch the video. I got to subscribe and find out. Yeah, you have to like and subscribe. It’s a cliffhanger. But the fact you guys did that thing you need to know about the ride today was that the f the first like 15 kilometers of work is you wanted. You never heard you never heard so many complaints. No, but but how you feel now? accomplish. Okay. The last the last hour was all downhill. Was just all downhill. It was really nice. Uh yeah, we rode almost 20k without pedaling, too. Yeah, it was it was nice. We made crazy time. We’re f we’re a sick team. But you know what is one of the most depressing things? Yeah. Put this here. One of the like because Siri is kind of [ __ ] As you know, it’s like we pedal we rode. So, it said it said something like it said like uh you have 13 km to go or something and we rode for an hour. I looked at it and pulled it out. 13 km. We still had 13 to go. I’m like, are you [ __ ] kidding? It’s a cruel job.
