[Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Applause] Heat. [Music] [Applause]

🚴‍♂️ 20251006 Japan Shikoku Island Round Cycling Certification 12 Days + Shimanami Kaido D4|Takamatsu → Higashikagawa → Naruto → Tokushima|Total Distance: 94.2 km|Elevation Gain: 860 m

Today, we depart from Takamatsu, the heart of Kagawa Prefecture, also known as the birthplace of Sanuki Udon, and head east toward Tokushima City, the capital of Tokushima Prefecture. This route links two prefectures—Kagawa and Tokushima—offering a day of riding through serene coastal views and breathtaking mountain scenery.

One of our teammates asked curiously, “Why is it called Sanuki Udon instead of Kagawa Udon?” The answer lies in history: Sanuki is Kagawa’s ancient name, just as Awa was the old name for Tokushima—hence the famous Awa Odori dance.
The “Shikoku” in Japan doesn’t mean “four countries,” but rather refers to the four ancient provinces, known as Ritsuryō provinces—Sanuki, Awa, Iyo, and Tosa—formed after Japan’s Taika Reforms when it adopted and localized China’s administrative system. Knowing the land beneath our wheels gives our journey a deeper sense of connection and respect.

Kagawa Prefecture is more than just the land of Udon. With the gentle Sanuki Mountains to the south and the vast plains and sparkling Seto Inland Sea to the north, it’s a place where nature and culture intertwine beautifully. The sunlight here has a soft, golden quality, making every scene feel poetic.

Even after yesterday’s grueling 120 km ride, everyone was still full of energy this morning. After breakfast, we set off once again beneath a wide blue sky. The air was crisp, the breeze carried the scent of the Seto Inland Sea, and the rhythm of the pedals soon found harmony with the sound of waves.

The road to Naruto—Route 183—winds through forested hills, where sunlight filters through the trees and shadows dance along the pavement. The slopes rise and fall gently, each climb rewarded with a deeper breath of nature’s fragrance. Then, just as the road turns, the forest parts—and suddenly, we’re met with a view so vast it feels like a path to heaven.
Both e-bike riders and those on road bikes are breathing hard but laughing aloud. The climb may be steep, but the joy of reaching the top makes every effort worthwhile.

Here lies Naruto City, in the northeastern corner of Tokushima Prefecture, where 60% of the land is mountainous. The city faces the Kii Channel, with the Naruto Strait separating it from Awaji Island. Stretching across the strait, the Ōnaruto Bridge gleams white under the sun, linking Shikoku to Awaji Island and connecting travelers onward to Kobe and Osaka. From the observation deck at Shikamiyama (Shihōmi), the view is spectacular—lush green islands scattered across the emerald sea, the bridge glowing on the left, and Naruto City lying gracefully on the right. It’s a panoramic feast of blue sky, sea, and light.

Heading south, we enter Tokushima Prefecture, a region surrounded on three sides by mountains soaring over 1,000 meters. Within its borders lie scenic areas like the Naruto-Tokushima coastal region, the Anan seashore, Mt. Tsurugi, and the deep Iya Valley. Tokushima is also famous for its Awa Odori summer dance, indigo dyeing, and traditional handmade washi paper, which give the prefecture its vibrant blend of art, culture, and craftsmanship.

By the time we reached Tokushima City, the sun was setting behind the Yoshino River. Today’s 91 km ride wasn’t the longest, but it was rich in discovery—from Kagawa’s savory aroma of Udon, to the sea breeze of Naruto, to the mountain light of Tokushima. Between the sea and the sky, we found balance—and in every drop of sweat, a quiet kind of happiness.
