The Cheapest Way to Travel to Japan from Korea! 🇯🇵 Busan to Tsushima Ferry Trip

there’s an island about 50 km away from busang Korea called tsushima most well known these days for the game Ghost of tsushima about defending the island from the Mongolian Invaders In the late 1200s but we discovered a certain beauty that we were not expecting in the slightest and best of all we had most of it to [Music] [Applause] [Music] ourselves 63% on the battery and where are we going you might be wondering with all the amazing places you can visit in Japan why pick tsushima well let’s look at flights to Osaka from Soul one of the cheapest places to go it’s about 210,000 W per person which is not too bad but what about tsushima it’s only 40,000 W round trip by ferry that’s about the same price as dining out at an average restaurant in Korea for two people but we get to ride the ferry to Japan and back and just like that we were sold but just so you know you also have to pay an extra fuel charge fee terminal fee and then taxes when returning from Japan [Music] you’re supposed to arrive about 1 hour before departing to check in and pick up your tickets and they’ll give you an arrival card in customs form to fill out there’s no food on the boat so we’re having some if you can hear what I’m saying right [Music] now security and Customs are super quick and once you’re inside the gate area the ferry terminal is similar to an airport with dutyfree stores a tiny Cafe and you have to board the ferry about 30 minutes before [Music] departing see you in Japan it takes just 1 and 1/2 hours from Busan to hak KATU which is on the Northern tip of the island but you can also travel to the bigger city of iara on the southern tip on a different Ferry which takes 2 and 1/2 hours and just so you know it takes about 2 hours by car to drive across the whole island which basically every person online recommends renting a car to get around as public transportation is very limited but we decided to do things our own way without a car or using the buses made it to [Music] sushima w easier than going to the immigration clearance was very simple and only took about 20 minutes and all of a sudden we are on our way to explore hak KATU a small little town with a population of about 1500 people and we could see the rental car companies immediately which are about 5,000 yen per day [Music] [Music] Japan has this sense of Harmony that no other place I’ve been to has if you pull out your camera and pointed in any direction you usually end up with a pretty good photo because it seems like everything is built in total Unison with each other and not really to stand out or be flashy like what you see in Korea sometimes it was time for lunch and exploring the Alleyways of Hutu there were actually quite a bit of different restaurants for its size probably because of its heavy population of Korean tours that show up every day that definitely helps Drive its economy in Japan you need to pay with cash at a lot of its restaurants and we showed up without any so we searched around for ATMs and the first two we found didn’t accept foreign cards there’s three ATM m in the city of hak KATU and luckily there’s a Japanese post office with an ATM that works with overseas cards so we’re not totally screwed yeah other than that it’s super peaceful here and there’s lots of uh hunger so it’s pretty obvious that there’s a lot of Korean tourists eh oh we’re just going to go get some lunch [Music] K despite all of Japan’s amazing and unique vending machines we are only going to be in tsushima for 3 days so we wanted to make sure every meal was a good one we started at a Japanese home cooking style place called Ken shokudo and they just let you walk through most of their house when you go to the [Music] bathroom she [Music] [Music] fore [Music] for Hutu is too small to have any bigname convenience stores but the life Value mart has pretty much everything you would find at them anyways and one of the best things about Japan is basically everything is high quality so you can buy a little $2 dessert and it tastes better than some of the $15 desserts I’ve had back home in Canada [Music] we explored around hak katsu some more and found another really nice Shrine called The toyosaki Shrine where two fighting gods are enshrined futsunushi a warrior God and takim mikazuchi a god of thunder and sword God who is said to have had the first sumo wrestling match in history and since we couldn’t bring our camp C to Japan we decided to stay at the toyoko Inn a hotel chain that’s usually pretty reasonable and somewhat Central but to our surprise it was a good 4 1/2 km walk along the coast to get there and a good opportunity to see what it’s like to go for a Trek on the beautiful Japanese [Music] [Applause] island wow [Music] it was becoming very clear that tsushima is incredibly beautiful walking around felt like being in a story book in a video game at the same time everything was just so peaceful with dozens of eagles patrolling and flying around at all times it felt very surreal and there’s no other place we’d rather be at the [Music] time also one thing we noticed was although sushima is probably up there with some of the more remote places in Japan somehow there was still something interesting to discover behind just about every corner it really goes to show the level of detail that Japanese residents put into their living [Music] spaces so it’s December 2nd today and it is t-shirt weather which is insane cuz it snowed like 40 1 cm last week in so it’s a 19° here so quite [Music] warm we walked a bit further and ended up right at the spot of the battle of the tsushima strait which was the final naval battle of the Russo Japanese war in May 1905 in which Japan held off 11 Russian battleships and one of the biggest Naval victories in Japanese history these monuments were built to pray for peace between Japan and Russia and to commemorate the local villagers that help the stranded survivors of the Russian [Music] Navy the location of this toyoko Inn is super remote right beside tsushima’s most famous beach muda beach but there are no restaurants or stores around and the shuttle bus is currently out of service for the low season so unless you have a car walking is the best way to get there and the shortest route is about 2.8 km or 40 minutes on foot oce view oce view wow wow we are pretty tired from our day traveling so we tried the free dinner which was Japanese Curry and pretty good too and then luckily there was a vending machine with snacks and drinks to last us the [Music] [Applause] night best part about [Music] Toyo breakfast buffet m [Music] the next day we decideed to take the shorter route walking back to H takatu which only took about 25 minutes or so and we stumbled upon some ruins that Dat Back to the yayoi period between 1,000 BC and 380 where korean-based Earth andwar was discovered in the sarcophagy that was found in the ‘ 7s which means there was probably some kind of cultural exchange that dates back thousands of years for us it was time to rent some ebikes to explore the northern part of of the island and biked together for the first time in what felt like ages the owner of the flower bike shop is an absolute character and jam of a person so we strongly recommend renting here if possible and if you rent for the day just make sure you return the bike by 4:30 p.m. it was our goal to bike to the Northwestern side of the island to a sober restaurant uen found and just being on the bikes again was an absolute blast oh yeah let’s go [Music] woo this is awesome highly recommend getting these ebikes if you come to tsushima biking is one of the absolute best ways to travel because you don’t really miss anything you can stop pretty much wherever you want to see the sites which sushima seems to be absolutely loed with shrines and historical areas despite its remote location and since you’re doing a lot of physical activity you work up a massive appetite which Works hand inand with traveling is when you’re in a place like Japan with so much amazing food you get to eat even more of it because you don’t fill up as fast I this is [Music] unfair so there’s a sidewalk pretty much the entire way along the road so it’s really really comfortable to roide and you can check out the views without having to yield to the cars so that’s really nice woohoo [Music] we made it to the soba restaurant AATA no and the restaurant is quite interesting and unique itself the soba noodles were handmade to Perfection served cold with a nice soft and chewy texture dipped in a soy sauce based dipping sauce the tempura here was absolutely amazing too so if you’re getting the soba definitely recommend getting it together with the tempura our next destination was the momii kaido or Road of maple trees back on the eastern part of the island about 10 km southeast of where we were we were on our way up a mountain and this section ended up being one of the most healing and relaxing rides we’ve ever [Music] done J one thing we’ve learned while traveling over the years is that it’s not usually the tourist spots that we remember the most they definitely serve a purpose to inform and teach people about a country’s history and culture but there’s just nothing like the freedom and peace of mind of exploring around like this with it all to our ourselves getting lost almost intentionally as you never know what’s around the next [Music] corner so there are vending machines everywhere all along the roads in the middle of nowhere so if you’re biking this don’t need to stock up on that much water cuz you can buy it anywhere we made it to Momi kaido the road of maple trees which despite being the start of December there was still a ton of Fall Foliage to look at it’s about 3 and 1/2 km of windy roads through the beautiful trees and I think seeing it by bike is the perfect way to experience it it’s just a really leisurely ride that’s definitely worth it in the fall [Music] time we rode the 12 km or so back to hak KATU on really nice Coastal road with lots of beautiful views of the fishing villages along the way and of course more shrines giving it that really Japanese feel and that wrapped up our amazing time back on the bikes was fun eh if you come toshima from P that is a definitely must do [Music] a so there’s kind of a a funny period between about 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. where the cafes is close and none of the restaurants open for dinner until about 6:00 p.m. so if you’re like us you just kind of get stranded walking around like this outside they’re waiting for a sushi place to open [Music] you might think that you’d be missing out on some amazing Japanese food in such a remote location but it felt like Hutu had so much variety for its size and the sushi here was quite good too [Music] this toy was amazing though our fairy wasn’t set to depart until 400 p.m. so we had some time to relax and explore Hutu one time before leaving it’s such a peaceful town with lots of really nice Lookouts to hike up and explore and tons of things to discover in the Alleyways too we also had an amazing lunch at a ramen shop within the city which was just as good as anything we’ve had in places like Osaka or Tokyo before and better than the famous chain fore after eugin gained her sanity from eating more Pudding we went for a walk along the coast away from the city on the Eastern side which has a domestic fairy terminal that leaves to fukoka city and the neighborhoods past it were so beautiful [Music] too our last stop was the ripples of aido which get their shape from the waves hitting them and not really a mustsee but worth it if you have some extra time like we did and that’s sums up our trip to tsushima an island that frankly looked a bit boring by looking at the information online but we had such a good time that by the end of our trip we were left wanting more it was hard to say goodbye to the island but with its proximity to Korea and just how easy it is to get there we’ll be back soon and we’re already looking forward to our next trip thanks so much for watching our video we hope you’re all healthy and happy and hope to see you soon in another video [Music]

Hello everyone! We were feeling a trip to Japan, and found the cheapest way to do so by taking the ferry from Busan, Korea to Hitakatsu on Tsushima Island, Japan. We had quite low expectations to be honest, as whenever we searched online we only found information about the game Ghosts of Tsushima and we had a hard time finding anything we were particularly interested in. However, we were absolutely blown away by just how beautiful it is, the great variety of restaurants around, and also how we didn’t feel like we were missing out by not going to a place like Osaka or Tokyo. Trekking and biking around the island is also amazing, and by the end of the trip we were left wanting more. Enjoy!

  1. Great video! Do you know if they allow bicycles on the ferry? I'll be bike touring in Korea and Japan next year and I'd really like to check out Tsushima instead of going right to Fukuoka.
Thanks for all the great content!

  2. What will you recommend visiting more… this island and city or Fukuoka in Kyushu island???.. will be down that way in & around April. There mate!!!.. which one will you say is cheaper as well??.. any recommendation helps there!!!.. I’ll be in Busan and think will take a ferry into 🇯🇵 there!!!.. greetings from ur fellow 🇨🇦 mate! 😉

  3. I love your guys' perspective on travels as someone who lives in South Korea and always explores nearby travel destinations. Japan and China are the first countries I think of when it comes to traveling outside of Korea and it's great to see you guys go to less common but still beautiful places such as Hitakatsu!

  4. Really great video – thanks for sharing – I was thinking of doing a trip from Busan to Fukuoka this year – so it might make more sense to stop in Tsushima on the way! The bike ride looked great!

  5. We really enjoyed this video. It had such unexpected things to see and do and explore. However, we are really worried about your two. You normally put out a video every Sunday, and we haven't seen anything from you lately. Has it been okay living in the van during winter? Is that going okay? Is Eujin's family okay? Anyhow, we are hoping to see a new video very soon, and I hope you are both healthy and doing well.

  7. I was there 3 days ago as well, and I will go back to Hitakatsu in a few weeks, I've had such a peaceful feeling of this Island, and seeing your video brings me back nostalgia already !

  8. I did the same trip when I lived in Korea. It was fun, and the food/views were great but I saw so many Korean tourists in Tsushima it felt like I had never left 🙂

  9. Thanks for this amazing video! I would like to travel from Busan to Tsushima too and use the Starline Nina Ferry you two used, but i have a few questions. Do i need a korean credit card to buy the tickets and if yes would it be okay if a korean friend buys them for me? Secondly do they have any limits on luggage you can carry with you? I was thinking about going to Japan Mainland too and flying back by plane (would that be an issue btw). I know these questions are kinda far reaching but i would apprecciate any help ^^
