🚴‍♂️ 2025.10.05 Japan Shikoku Island Round Cycling Certification 12 Days + Shimanami Kaido D3|Niihama → Kanonji → Takamatsu|120 km|Elevation Gain: 1,010 m

Autumn has fully arrived in Shikoku. The air is cool, the daylight short, and today’s 120 km ride—from Niihama through Kanonji to the capital city of Kagawa, Takamatsu—is one of the toughest stages of the tour. To reach our destination before nightfall, everyone gathered for breakfast as soon as the restaurant opened at 6:30 a.m., and by 7:15 we were ready to roll—bags packed, helmets fastened, energy high.

When we drew open the curtains that morning, the world outside was still damp from the previous night’s rain. But not long after setting out, the clouds began to part, and sunlight streamed through the mountains, glimmering across the asphalt. It felt like the sky was cheering us on—“Keep going, today will be beautiful.”

Leaving Niihama, the group pedaled westward along the coast toward the Seto Inland Sea. As we entered Shikokuchuo City, the sea—hidden for days behind mist and rain—finally appeared, faint but visible. Climbing the first hill of the day rewarded us with a breathtaking view: golden rice fields shimmering under soft sunlight, low clouds hugging the hills, the gentle beauty of an autumn morning in Shikoku.

By the time we reached Kanonji, the Seto Inland Sea revealed its true splendor. The sky was a deep, transparent blue, the sea a silken shade of azure, dotted with white clouds and green islands floating quietly in the distance. Even for those of us from Taiwan—an island surrounded by seas in every direction—this view felt new, tender, and mesmerizing.
Riders stopped for photos, but none of our cameras could truly capture it. Someone smiled and said, “The best camera is your eyes; the best film is your memory.” Indeed, some beauty can only be felt, not recorded.

In the afternoon, we crossed into Kagawa Prefecture, located in northeastern Shikoku. The region is composed of three distinct parts: the Sanuki Mountains in the south, the Sanuki Plain in the north, and over 110 islands in the Seto Inland Sea, with Shodoshima being the largest. The Sanuki Mountains stretch in gentle waves, crowned by Mt. Ryuo at 1,060 meters—the highest peak in Kagawa—forming the prefecture’s natural backbone.

Our destination, Takamatsu City, lies on the northern coast of Kagawa, facing the Seto Inland Sea. Known as the “Gateway to Shikoku,” Takamatsu serves as the region’s transportation, cultural, and economic hub. From Takamatsu Station, railways connect to all corners of Shikoku, while ferries depart from Takamatsu Port to nearby islands. The city is home to renowned scenic spots such as Yashima and Kokubundai, both offering sweeping views of the island-dotted sea.

As we rolled into Takamatsu at dusk, the glow of city lights and the scent of sea breeze greeted our weary yet joyful team. The 120 km and 1,010 meters of climbing behind us weren’t just a test of endurance—they were the price of pure happiness. After all, only through effort and persistence can one taste the sweetness of arrival.
