Hello everyone. This is Chutori. This time, I’d like to introduce you to Yabiji, one of Japan’s largest coral reefs , a place you should visit at least once in your life! I’ve actually visited Miyakojima over 20 times over the past few years, but this was my first time visiting Yabiji. Honestly, I wish I’d gone sooner… The scenery was so breathtaking! The crystal-clear waters. The endless coral reefs. The colorful fish. Everything was beyond imagination. In this video, I’ll share the charms of my actual experience, as well as basic information, how to get there, what to bring, and things to keep in mind. I’ll be sharing the charms of Yabiji, a spectacular marine spot that Miyakojima, Okinawa, is proud of . Let’s get started. First, let me introduce you to what kind of place Yabiji is. Yabiji is a vast coral reef area stretching out in the sea north of Miyakojima, Okinawa. Located about 15km offshore northeast of Ikema Island, which is connected to Miyako Island by bridge, Yabiji stretches approximately 17km north to south and 6.5km east to west, making it one of Japan’s largest coral reef systems. With over 100 coral reefs, both large and small, scattered throughout, this mystical sea is often referred to as “Japan’s Great Barrier Reef.” The waters are filled with colorful coral, as well as adorable tropical fish like damselfish and clownfish, the inspiration for Finding Nemo! If you’re lucky, you might even spot sea turtles and manta rays. But what’s most impressive is the clarity of the water! The sparkling, Miyako blue world unfolds before your eyes as the light filters through. This is one of Miyako Island’s most popular marine spots, attracting visitors from both Japan and abroad to experience this stunning scenery. Here, I’ll share my experience of the tour I took, along with tips on accessing Yabiji, how to enjoy it, and things to keep in mind! First, how do you get there? Many people are wondering about this, but there are actually no regular ferry or other transportation options to get to Yabiji. To get there, you’ll need to join a tour organized by a marine shop or charter a boat. While many people choose to join a tour, there are many shops offering Yabiji tours, with a wide variety of activities and plans. The marine shop I used this time was “Marlin.” Led by a captain from Miyakojima, the shop boasts a homey, local atmosphere. It ‘s fully registered and employs many female staff members, so even first-timers felt at ease. Another factor that helped me decide was the wonderful Instagram posts! The fun atmosphere and beautiful photos convinced me I’d be able to capture some memorable photos here. The day before, I received a notification of the event and received information about the meeting place and time. The meeting time this time was 12:30 PM! The location was Ikema Island! I excitedly drove there. By the way, this was a trip for a mother and daughter. We took a half-day tour, perfect for first-time snorkelers. For reference, the price was 11,000 yen. Low tide is recommended because you get closer to the coral! So, this time, we chose the afternoon session, which coincides with low tide. If you choose the morning or afternoon session, we recommend checking the tide timings. There are also age restrictions for tours; Marlin’s is for those in elementary school and older, up to 60 years old. This varies depending on the tour company, so it’s best to check in advance. Marlin’s tours are a meet-and-greet and finish-up service, so we headed out fully prepared in our swimsuits and rash guards. Here’s what I brought: A sun hat with a neck shield. I recommend a hat with a string to keep it from blowing away. Sunscreen. I chose a beach-friendly type that’s gentle on the coral. And a face towel! It’s handy, so I recommend it. The camera equipment I brought with me was a DJI Osmo Action 4 and a Telesin Diving Dome PortPort. I’ve been using this equipment for a long time because it allows me to simultaneously capture both above and below the water surface, and it also allows me to take wide, stable shots even underwater. After arriving, I filled out the application form and immediately boarded the boat! ~The fit of life jackets and other items~ was a thrill! Each group is provided with a dry box for valuables on the boat, so it’s safe. It’s important to pack only the bare necessities! There have been recent reports of car break-ins, so be careful not to leave valuables in your car. Before setting sail, there was a lecture on how to use the snorkeling equipment and precautions. They also carefully explained how to use the rental camera. They even explained things like seasickness prevention and how to use the restroom, so it’s important to listen carefully. It was nice to hear so many kind explanations! On the half-day course, we stopped at three spots! Let’s go! Now, let’s set sail! After about 20 minutes of cruising, the endless world of Miyako blue spreads out before our eyes! Or maybe it’s Ikema blue because we’re on Ikema Island? The scenery just keeps on being beautiful! The weather was beautiful that day, and the boat was truly exhilarating as it cut through the wind! I was amazed at the view we’d seen as we passed under the Ikema Ohashi Bridge! *The boat rocks quite a bit once we’re out in the open sea. Tips for preventing seasickness: 1. Take sickness medication before departure. 2. Have a light breakfast. 3. Get plenty of sleep. 4. Avoid excessive anxiety. 5. If you do get seasick, don’t push yourself and vomit. The departure point for Yabiji Tours is also important. Departure points vary by shop. It takes about 20 minutes from Ikema Island, and about 40 minutes from Hirara Port or Sarahama Port on Irabu Island. If you’re concerned about seasickness, we recommend a tour departing from Ikema Island, which has a shorter boarding time. We soon arrived at our first point! The water was so clear that the coral was clearly visible even from above! Wow!!! I’m so excited! We donned our gear and headed into the ocean. Some people dive from the boat, while others can dive slowly using a ladder. My mother was a little nervous at first, but her life jacket helped her float safely. We were divided into small groups with guides, so even beginners felt completely at ease! When we finally looked into the ocean… it was truly a dream world. Colorful branching coral, table coral, schools of blue-and-white damselfish, and the clownfish from Finding Nemo —I felt like a mermaid! At this spot, the reef suddenly became deeper, and the crystal-clear blue continued endlessly, creating a fantastical feeling of being sucked into the depths. After enjoying our fill of snorkeling, we moved on to our second spot. Yabiji has eight large tidal flats, each with a completely different character. There are over 100 snorkeling spots, and the captain guides us to the best spot of the day depending on the strait and wind conditions. This means that each spot is different, and there’s always something new to discover, which is what makes it so appealing. By the way, the names given to the coral reefs were apparently given by the local fishermen of Ikema Island. It’s wonderful to see stories like this that convey the locals’ love and pride for the ocean. During the trip, I felt a bit chilly, even in summer, when my body got wet and the sea breeze hit me. I thought it might be a good idea to bring a slightly larger towel to cover myself with. The boat also had tea and water available, so I made sure to drink them frequently while the boat was stopped. Now we’ve arrived at the second point. Here we go! Ready, set…! At this point, it felt like swimming through a coral forest! Since it was low tide, we were able to get much closer to the fish and coral, which made the experience even more impressive. The important thing here is not to harm the coral or other creatures. I enjoyed the underwater world, being careful not to kick the coral with my fins. Our final stop was a photo spot called If! Here, the sunlight reflected off the shallow sandy ocean floor, creating a sparkling emerald blue world! The scenery was just as I’d seen on Instagram… No, it was even more beautiful than that. On the left, a sea turtle! Floating in the ocean and bathed in sunlight, it was such a spectacular view that I thought, “This might be heaven…” It was low tide that day, so we were able to stand and walk in the ocean! It was a dreamlike experience. They took lots of photos! I’m so happy because when you come to a place like this, you want to take lots of photos! My mother said, “I’ve finally got the hang of snorkeling!” While there are no corals here, she enjoyed the shimmering light filtering through the water as she swam. Apparently, if you’re lucky, sea turtles come to play here. Unfortunately , we didn’t see any today, so I hope to encounter one in this beautiful ocean someday. After having lots of fun at Ifu, we headed home. Time flew by, but we were very satisfied! As we passed under the Ikema Bridge on our way back, I reminisced about our experience. After the tour, they transferred the photos to our smartphones, and at the port, they provided bottled water to cool down the tide and a poncho for changing clothes, which was very appreciated. On the way back, we stopped at Umikurai, just before crossing the Ikema Bridge, to buy some purple sweet potato mochi and savored it. A sweet treat after a full day of fun! It was a fantastic ending. What did you all think? Yabiji was a world beyond my imagination. Even though I’ve been to Miyakojima many times, I was so moved that I wondered, “Why haven’t I been here before?” I truly felt that it was a breathtaking sight that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
