BAITA TOUR #6 Matheus, dal Brasile ad una baita isolata nei boschi della Valsesia
Welcome back to this new episode of Baita Tour. So far, we’ve seen how everyone interprets the mountain hut in their own way. Some are more traditional, some have a more modern vision, and some simply see it as a place to unwind from the daily grind, the frenetic pace of modern life, and recharge. We’re also accustomed to hearing about the depopulation of the mountains, because life in the mountains is very hard, and about young Italians who leave to seek their fortune abroad. Today, I’ll introduce you to a young man who comes from far away, from Brazil, and who has made a choice that bucks the trend of our fellow Italians. That is, unlike us, who seek our fortune abroad, many foreigners come from abroad to seek their fortune in Italy. Fortune, in quotation marks, because fortune can simply be a better lifestyle, not necessarily financial fortune. Today, I’ll introduce you to Mateus, who has chosen to come from Brazil to live in a secluded cabin in the woods of the Valsesia mountains. A truly curious case because Mateus has no family ties here, so we can’t even find any local support as a reason for his choice . Matteus chose to live here because he fell in love with our mountains , essentially. How will Matteus manage to support himself from his isolated cabin in the woods? We’ll ask him himself. But before we get to know Matteus, let me introduce the sponsor of this video. This is the power bank provided to me by ChukTtech, and it’s a product that I’d say fits perfectly with this video because, for me, a power bank is an essential tool when I’m out and about recording videos, to charge my photography equipment and electronic devices. Let’s take a closer look at what’s so special about this power bank. We’re talking about a power bank with a battery life of 20,000 mAh, which is definitely enough to charge our smartphone three or four times. What really makes this power bank so powerful is the speed with which it can charge our electronic devices. It can deliver a total of 85 W, meaning we can use it to charge up to three devices. It has two USB Type-C ports and a USB Type-A port. The USB Type-C port can deliver up to 65 W, allowing us to charge even small laptops or, for example, a Samsung S24 Ultra at 45 W. If we use all three ports, we can get a maximum of 85 W, which is a remarkable amount of power for such a small power bank. The build quality can really be felt when holding this power bank in your hand and looking at it. It’s really well made, very beautiful aesthetically, and you can see that it’s a quality product built to last. It has all the protection systems, including safety against short circuits and possible fires. The casing is fireproof and flameproof, precisely to protect against any anomalies. There’s a small front display that shows the remaining charge percentage, and this power bank can also be charged in ultra-fast mode at 65W. So, let’s say that in an hour and a half, we have our power bank ready to use, able to charge all our devices. Despite being a high-quality product, the price, I must say, is really very low, and in my opinion, this is a perfect product to carry around if you’re a photographer or videographer, perhaps to use a spotlight like I’m doing now, you could connect it to a spotlight, or to charge the batteries of your action cam or drone. If you’re interested in more information, I’ll leave all the links in the description. Remember, always check back because there may be discount codes. Thanks to Chuktech, and let’s continue our mountain hut tour. Look at this spectacular place; this little village in Valsesia is truly beautiful. We’re in Rossa, a very well-kept and well-maintained village. And now I’m heading to Mateus, who doesn’t live here in the village. It’s a little more hidden in an isolated mountain pasture and now I’m going to take this path to reach it. Wow! Look how beautiful this church is, wonderful. Such a surprise in the middle of the woods. เฮ How scary! Here Mateus is, finally. How are you? Good, good. Are you tired, path? Nice to meet you. Yeah, tired for so little. Nice to meet you. Here I am with Matteus. I said a bit of an exotic tour because Matteus comes from very far away. Tell us where you’re from, Matteus. Brazil. Brazil is where exactly? Santa Catalina. In southern Santa Catarina, near the south. Yes, near Argentina. Oh, okay. Okay. By the way, I was just in Brazil in April. Yes, yes. In São Paulo though. Oh, no, I’m further down. You’re further down. Yes. Good, but whatever, tell us about it later. First, let’s do the whole tour of the cabin, and then you can tell us what brought you here, from Brazil to the mountains of Valsesia. Yes, I can already tell you that Matteus’ cabin is really, really, really beautiful, really cute. Matteus, now take us on the tour, and then tell us a little about yourself, okay? Okay, come on. So, here, here we have the kitchen. Oh, by the way, your Italian is excellent. Bravo, very good. Yes, thank you. I mean, the kitchen is the place to eat. Yes, let’s say the living room. Well, all together it’s a bit small, but it’s okay. Is that what you call a stove? Yes, stove-stove. Stove-stove. Yes. Here it is. And I also have the gas stove. There’s gas here. Exactly. And the refrigerator. Refrigerator and with the Bluetti energy. Can you keep the refrigerator running continuously without any problems? Yes, you’re fine. So you mostly cook with the stove too, I guess. Yes. Gas, because for example, I use gas very little, right? Very little. More and more with a little more wood, eh. But the food also turns out better this way in this fabric here is more… Ah, yes, it has more flavor. Okay. And Matteus also just got a friend. His name is Nico, you said. Nico. Hi Nico. Nico. Hi. Hi. He’s a Border Collie. How soft he is. How soft Nico, you clever guy. Alright. Eh, so, up there we have a living room and a bedroom and a bathroom. Before there was a sofa down here. So, when I bought the cabin, there was a bedroom, but I took out, like, a wall that was here. In fact, the staircase was here in front of the door. Ah, okay. I moved it over here and took out the wall, and there were some sofas here, but since so many people have been coming over this summer , I put the bed that was there before, which is also great for watching TV and playing PlayStation. Sure, sure. Oh, I have a bathroom here, a small one. Oh, with a wood-burning boiler. Yes. Are you happy with the wood-burning boiler? Great, huh. I have to turn it on early in the morning so it’s hot enough to shower whenever I want. Oh, and the shower is great too. The water comes from the mountains. Yes, you don’t have water problems here, you have plenty of water. There’s water everywhere. Only in winter, when it’s already frozen, it’s already frozen. You ‘re here full-time, I mean, you live right here. Yes, yes. It’s a little different from the others who have cabins for the summer. Yes, yes. Yes, but I can do it because I also have the quad and yes, more or less you can get there with a vehicle, so it can do the shopping, transport materials, gas, everything. Sure, sure. Okay. Over here there’s a bedroom that’s not very well arranged. But yeah, come on, I’ll do You can cut if it’s not… Yes, okay, okay, don’t worry too much. But yeah, no, but well, damn, beautiful. Anyway, there’s a lot of space, it didn’t seem like it, but this cabin is really big, huh. Yeah, beautiful. I want to change this and put a little window like these here. Mmh. Because it helps to always have more light. Yes, and also the speed camera. I want to put one here and then one over there. Well, over there, for example, I’d go for the classic one they use in many bites, the big glass one, the triangular one. That one is nice, huh. But here it’s really expensive. Yeah, I know. When I have some money I’ll do it, but for now, well, I’ll put up some speed cameras and also put some glass here. I wanted to put that one like this. Mmh. Up and down too, eh. Okay. There’s also a little bedroom up and down here, and this is the one I sleep in every day. Okay. So this is your room? You chose to stay in a separate room in your cabin, so yes. Why? It’s because there’s more light here and I like it better because I don’t know, even in winter it’s brighter. Yes, the light is always good here because the sun, uh, goes down there. So this is the brightest part and I like the light better. Come on, you sleep better here, come on, I mean. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I like it. Um, and then up here we also have a little bedroom. I have to get the key, sorry. I mean, we have a huge boulder next to his cabin with a ladder that goes up. I mean, this one is really cool, huh, this thing here. Yeah. It’s a bit of a mess here too because in the end … Oh, okay. It’s low, it’s still very low. Yeah, yeah, very. But damn, it’s still cute. Well, you know, you have a lot of places, huh. Yes, but like I told you before, I wanted to remove the skins here and leave the bedroom higher. Yes, it actually makes sense because even this low door here will become like a window. In the end, it’s a bit claustrophobic. If you open this part here and create a mezzanine, it gives more of a sense of space, in my opinion. So , exactly. Exactly. Also because it doesn’t open here. So, it’s fine for sleeping here in the winter, but well, it’s not the most. Have you become a breeder? Yes. How many have you got now? Now there are five and a rooster, but this one here is too small, I have to make it bigger. I’ve already got the wood and I’ll do it here, I’ll remove this little hole, I’ll do it here or I’ll do it further down. But I have to figure it out, okay? Look where the chickens are here. Oh, they’re inside. Oh, no, they’ve already gone. They roam around, all down here. And then they come back in the evening. Well, watch out for the foxes and martens because everyone tells me that. Look, they don’t last long so far. Well, so far everything’s been fine. Good. Well, yes, but then I want to make a bigger enclosure so they can be more protected, but yes, they go away and after the first day, the first day they were there they disappeared, I got a little scared and couldn’t find them. I thought the foxes had come and eaten them. In the evening I came here, they were all inside like this, the sun goes down, they automatically go back to their home. So first I left them locked up for a week because that way they learned that this was their safe place, like their safe place. Yes, yes. Um, here are two small pans, the ones for bluebirds and inside there are bluebirds, two batteries and a transformer, right? What do you call it? An inverter, right? Inverter and generator, even like this when there’s no sun, I can charge them. Okay, so here you’re not connected to the electricity grid, you’re off-grid, 100% off-grid, 100% off-grid, and you produce as you go with these panels, and that’s enough for you, let’s say, plus the generator you mentioned, and a gasoline generator in case of emergency, if you need it. Hmm. Well, the location is very beautiful in the middle of the mountains, the nature is spectacular. It’s very cool. It’ll definitely be a bit challenging in the winter, I imagine. Yes. Hmm, very much so. But it’s okay. The strange thing is that in the winter there’s more sun here, so you come earlier, get here earlier. Of course, in the summer it’s up until 7:00, and in the winter it’s up until 4:00. What altitude are you? What height? I don’t know, I’ll tell you. We’re at 885 m. Not much, more or less the same as where I live. Hmm. Same altitude as me. Yes, let’s say it’s a good compromise because it’s nice even in winter when it has sunny days and when it snows it melts pretty quickly. I imagine that even here if it snows it melts quickly. Yeah, yeah. So, Matteus, I brought you here to taste a very old Toma. M So they’re the nice aged ones. Yes. I don’t know if you like it. I like it. I like it a lot. Yes. And then I brought you a wine with Linearesi which is, let’s say, my area. Okay. Which is always good. I like it. Coline Novi. Thanks. So, in general I love South America, I like Latin America a lot, so let’s say Yes, basically I like it, I like all the places in South America, I also like the culture a little bit, let’s say, even how they experience it. There, Yes, I have to say that Brazil, São Paulo, some areas Nico, no, but leave it, don’t worry. [Music] São Paulo. Eh, Paolo is giant. No, São Paulo is giant. There are some areas that are The old historic center is scary. Ah, yes. Well, but you went there because No. And when I go to a place I also want to see the realities. Ah, okay. A little more, eh, really scary. Yes, but more than anything, the thing that left me was the fact that that was the liveliest center of São Paulo once upon a time and now it’s sort of like a zombie place. It’s called Cracolandia. Cracolandia, exactly. I mean, it’s horrible. Horrible. Yes. Yes. Sad, sad. And then the other thing that left me a little was I went to Guarujá, which is a beautiful place on the ocean with lots of beautiful nature, I mean, it’s beautiful, right? And even there, you know, the houses are all protected by electric fences, barbed wire, because I understand there’s a lot of squatting there, right? Yes, they’re squatting. Cheers, Matteus at the baitour. Thanks. What do you think? Yes, I’d say so. It’s perfect. Then a Brazilian asks me how to cook meat, sorry, no, you can’t hear it, come on. I mean, come on. Matteus, so, tell us while you’re there cooking, okay? Because then, obviously, everyone’s wondering what brought you from Brazil here to Italy. Okay, it’s the most obvious thing. How did you find this cabin? Okay. Why did you choose to come? I mean, normally a person who comes from Brazil—there are many Brazilians in Italy— but they usually go to the cities, Milan, Turin, whereas you came here in the mountains to a cabin. And how do you manage to survive and support yourself? Okay. So, first, I came to Italy because they gave me a scholarship at this research center called Fabbrica, which is now closed, it’s no longer open, but it’s a research center that belongs to, as they say in Italian, belongs to Benetton, and I came to study photography and video with Oliviera Toscani and all the people who were there. After the second week, I already started working with Benetton, creating content, following Oliviero, you know, in the studio, and doing this. So, you worked personally with Oliviero Toscani? I worked not only with Oliviero, but with the whole team that created content for Benetton, created, like, advertising campaigns for Benetton. Well, but he was the boss, he was the director, and I kind of went back with the others to do everything he wanted. And so, that’s why I came to Italy. I came here because I wanted to go to that place, which is fantastic. Okay. And it was just like something else, like, I don’t know how to put it, something that’s unique. An excellence, it’s an excellence. Yeah, and because I wanted to meet Olivero Toscani. I was like, I learned about the factory through Colors Magazine, which was this magazine created by Benetton with Oliviero, and I wanted to meet him, I wanted to study with him, but it’s not like I wanted to come to Italy, if it were a factory in Germany and I went to Germany. But you have Italian roots, right? Yes, I have Italian roots, the ninth and from Bergamo. From Bergamo, yes. I didn’t come for that. And after that, I stayed here because I really liked Italy. I discovered it’s my favorite place. The food is good, the people and the beach, the mountains, everything is beautiful. And then how did you end up here in the cabin? I was a little tired of working in fashion. I started looking on Idealista for houses in the mountains, houses that weren’t too expensive because I didn’t have any money, and in the end I found this house here that wasn’t that expensive, obviously because it’s in the middle of nowhere and nobody buys it, no one would buy it, as they say in Italian. No one would buy it. No one would buy it because it’s in an inconvenient, isolated location, and everyone, you know, wants to get there by car instead. The most you can get there is by ATV, quad, or motorbike, and it’s off-grid, there’s no electricity, no grid water. So, I found this house here. I fell in love with the place, which is very nice, and also with the price. Well, you know, you like being surrounded by nature anyway, right? So why? Exactly, because I was born in a place like this in Brazil. Also. Okay. So even in Brazil you’ve always been used to living in a certain type of… Yes, yes, I was born in the middle of nature. My house was exactly like that. It was like here, but you could get there by car, I burned it. I wanted to live this life I saw. In fact, I watched your videos on YouTube and thought, damn, if he, if he, has this place that’s beautiful and lives this life, I want to live it too. And I started to get inspired by other YouTubers who lived this type of life. I did a bit of research, I watched a lot of videos that talked about sustainable energy and I decided to buy it and I came and there you go. Okay. And now how do you manage to Aspe, wait. How old are you, young man? I’m 31 31 92. I’m 92. 32 32 You don’t even know how old you are. And how do you support yourself now? Because you don’t work anymore, so that was a scholarship, and luckily I found a job after I left Benetton that allows me to work from home. A job with different clients, clients from New York or even Germany, like other different clients. They allow me to work from home, and with satellite internet, they say, Yeah, yeah, I can work from here, so I can do something like that, and when I work with, like, Americans, it’s perfect because they wake up later. I work all morning in the cabin, doing things from home—cleaning, wood, everything—and after the afternoon I start working with… You don’t even have a degree, you said. So, basically, you created a profession like that almost out of nowhere. Yes, I started working when I was 16, I was an illustrator for a fashion company, also like Benetton, like in Brazil. And after that, I’ve always been in this world of imagery, right? Creating, like, drawings, photography, or videos for fashion brands, for fashion clients, like in the fashion world, like. Ah, we have Milan right here, you should stay in Milan, but instead you’re… Oh, no, but I like going to Milan to eat, to go to the movies, but living there is a bit too much for me. Yes, beautiful, I like it. Milan is like a big city, but I like living like that, like sleeping with the door open, don’t be afraid, you were telling me that’s one of Brazil’s problems, a bit like this, right? Yes, in fact, because of what I left there, I didn’t go back to Brazil because Brazil is where there is so much violence, so much inequality. Inequality is what they say, right? Yeah, yeah. Inequality. Inequality. Sorry. I was born in a small town in Brazil, it’s called Jaraguado Sul in Santa Catarina, in the state of Santa Catarina. And then, when I was like 23, I went to live in Porto Allegri, which is a bigger city, and there I had the shock of going to the supermarket and seeing, like, children sitting on the floor asking for money, which I hadn’t seen before in my city where it was smaller, and that really made a huge impression on me. And after Sao Paolo, Rio di Giano, like, it’s not a nice place. Nice to see, right? Because it’s not, it’s not right. And I was always living with this stress, like, I was there like, damn, what do I have to do to help? And after I came to Italy, I saw that here it’s much more, like, yes, let’s say, we’re all a bit leveled out, there are the very rich, but, well, it’s a little less noticeable, this leap in terms of not being polarized, so unfortunately, there are those who are millionaires and those who are poor, but maybe, uh, later in the future I’ll go back to Brazil to maybe create some kind of school or something that can also help these types of people, the children who are poor. Well, I don’t know, with all the experience I’ve gained here, maybe. Okay. At a certain point, I started to get this boom in Argentine viewership, but I didn’t understand why. Then, basically, someone wrote to me: “I saw you on television in Argentina.” Television. Television. Basically, there was this channel that took videos from YouTube without asking for permission and published them on an Argentine television channel, and then people started following you from there. Following me, right? And then I tell you, for me it wasn’t even A problem, I mean, they could have continued showing them because they’d still be advertising me to a new audience in Argentina. So, Matteus, before I say goodbye, I wanted to ask you what your future plans are and what it’s like to be here for someone who comes from far away, to be here in the middle of this place, which, well, for me, is wonderful, in the middle of the woods, surrounded by nature, far from everyone. What’s it like for you to live your daily life? Because you’re here every day anyway. Mm, in some way, my idea is to start investing here in the area, right? Like everything I earn from… Yeah, let’s say it’s the YouTube channel because rightly so, sorry. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, actually, I mean, I have YouTube, but my biggest job is what I do, like, for clients and in America, like, Sure. And everything I earn there, my idea is to somehow find a place to invest here to create some kind of cultural space, or I don’t know, I want to invest here in the area for the future. So, do you want to stay here? Absolutely. You have no other ideas. You want to stay here. No, no, I don’t want to leave, I don’t want to go to America, I don’t want to go back to Brazil, I want to stay here, I want to invest in the chalets, make them more comfortable. Yes. And yet I also want to bring something back to the community here in the mountains and these villages near me, right? Yes. I don’t know, I don’t know yet, but I want to bring something here because I think, just as I came here from outside and took over this already beautiful place, I want you to also feel obliged to give something in return. That’s right, in return. For the future, my plan is to somehow find some kind of something to give back to this community, this this area. And what was the other question? No, I’ll dwell on this for a moment because it’s curious, because in the end, on the contrary—I even made an introduction to this video where I said that many Italians basically do the exact opposite, that is, they leave Italy to seek opportunities abroad because they can’t find their place here, a place for themselves. Instead, you basically took the opposite path, that is, you came to Italy, to a difficult mountainous place, and you’re still trying to find an opportunity to build something to work on, right? Here. So exactly, I mean, it’s something special, right? Yes, my idea would be to revive this area, together with all the people around here, right? Like the young people, the old people, everyone who stayed here, the most resilient, right? Because those who aren’t so resilient have left. But I want to somehow create something together with these people who stayed here. And yes, it’s true, there are many young people who leave Italy because there aren’t the opportunities for them, and in these 5-6 years that I’ve been here, I’ve seen many of my friends who have migrated to Belgium, London, America, because in Italy it’s a bit difficult for young people, and I think there’s a lot of this kind of situation where in Italy they value those who come from abroad more . Well, at least, oh, you’re saying that. No, but it’s true, it’s true. And that’s why it’s sad because younger Italians are forced to leave and find opportunities elsewhere that aren’t there for them here. But the same thing happened to me in Brazil, right? Yes, yes, of course. I left. If I—Yes, I stayed there—in Brazil, it would be different because there too they value those who come from abroad more. It’s always like that. Your neighbor’s thing is better than yours, right? Yeah, the grass is always greener on the other side. Greener. Exactly. Exactly. I know, yeah. I don’t know. For me, my plan is to stay here, to invest here, to start families here and create something beautiful to leave behind for those who come after, like the family who sold me this cabin, left me this beautiful cabin here to build a story and have something to leave behind. So you’ll be here during the week, also because you’ll be spending a lot of time alone, I imagine, right? Yes. During your week, you’re calm, peaceful, and well. And luckily, I have my dad here who helps me a lot, and my mom too, who comes here to help me. Yes. Do you have family nearby to support you? Yes, they’re close by. My dad is always here, he helps me chop wood, do all that heavier work, because life in the mountains isn’t easy, life in the mountains isn’t easy, being alone is really difficult. And if it weren’t for my dad and mom now who help me put it all together, I don’t know if I could do it, if you could do it alone. If I could do it alone. Exactly. Exactly. Matteus, thank you for hosting your little corner of paradise. Matteus is very shy, he’s extremely shy. Well, congratulations because your cabin is truly beautiful, it’s a spectacular location. I really like it because you have that real connection, the breath of the woods in a truly wild environment, but you’ve created an atmosphere that’s rustic, but also very welcoming. Really very welcoming. Anyway, Matteus is shy, he doesn’t want to advertise, but I’ll leave his YouTube channel in the description below because he’s good, anyway, because Thanks, uh, exactly, you have an artistic, photographic, and so on background, so he knows how to work with the camera. And nothing, what can I say? I remind you to subscribe to the channel, leave me a like, leave me a comment. Thanks Mateus, and I’ll see you at the next B to Tour, and I’ll probably come visit you again. Perfect. Bye everyone. Co?

Buonasera Luca
Great stuff, I love both channels 🙂
Grazie
Viva la vita
This is a good series idea. Seeing other mountain or rural cottages is interesting. The owners must have interesting stories to report.
Bellissima valle, bellissima baita!!
Purtroppo il tempo è tiranno e quando diventi vecchio e carico di acciacchi devi fuggire da questi luoghi cosi belli e solitari ahimè!!!☹️☹️☹️
Video sembre belli ed interessanti 👍
