桜並木の神田川サイクリング🌸路面電車と水辺の風景【東京ライドビュー】2025春
Springtime along the Kanda River, riding along the cherry blossom-lined streets — Tokyo Ride View, Part 2. We start at Edogawabashi in Bunkyo City, Tokyo. Right next to Edogawabashi Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line. We depart from the Docomo Bike Share port “Edogawa Park (E2-02)” just across the Kanda River. From here, we’ll ride about 2.1 km to Takadobashi, crossing the intersection with Meiji Street, through the Nishi-Waseda area. Across the river, the cherry blossoms of Edogawa Park are in full bloom. We’d love to ride through the park, but bicycles are not allowed inside. So for a while, we’ll continue along the opposite bank, enjoying the view of the cherry trees. We’ve passed under the Waseda exit overpass of the Metropolitan Expressway Ikebukuro Route 5. Across the river, Edogawa Park is bursting with cherry blossoms. You could also enjoy walking with pushing your bike in Edogawa Park. The moment we’ve been waiting for — cherry trees finally appear on this side as well. The first bridge that appears is Otaki-bashi Bridge. It connects directly to Edogawa Park. Komatsuka-bashi Bridge. We’ve arrived at Yutaka-bashi Bridge. The cherry blossoms are overhanging the river. I hear birds — look, there are some! These are Eurasian wigeons, migratory birds that come in winter. They mainly eat plants and live in lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. They’re relaxing in the shallow water — it feels very peaceful. It’s a bit surprising that they come even into Tokyo’s residential neighborhoods. Nakano-hashi Bridge. Mishima-bashi Bridge. This is Omokage-bashi Bridge. Omokagebashi is also known for the Omokagebashi stop on the Toden Arakawa Line. Yes, it runs right along the middle of Shin-Mejiro Street. Oh, here comes the tram now. This is the stop, located in the middle of the road. The Toden Arakawa Line is now the only streetcar left in Tokyo. Around 1955, it was one of the largest networks in Japan, but with motorization and the expansion of subways, most lines were abolished. By 1972, only this one line remained. Nowadays, it’s also affectionately called the “Tokyo Sakura Tram”. This area is also near the setting of the 1970s folk song “Kanda River” by Koosetsu Minami and Kaguya-hime. It seems there used to be a “small public bath in an alley” nearby. Let’s move on, imagining what it looked like back then. We’ve arrived at Akebono-hashi Bridge. Across the river, the riverbed looks like it has steps — what is that? That’s a fish ladder. Originally, there were three 1-meter drops across the river to slow the current. However, this prevented fish from swimming upstream, so in 1997, a fish ladder was built during renovation work. It serves as a path for fish to move upstream and as a habitat. Fish really swim up the Kanda River? Yes. In the past, water pollution was severe, making it hard for fish to live here. But by 1992, sweetfish were spotted again, and now you can see about 20 species, including sweetfish, pale chub, gobies, and loaches. That’s it for today. We saw Eurasian wigeons and imagined sweetfish swimming upstream — even in the city, we can feel nature. How did you enjoy the scenery of cherry trees along the Kanda River and the streetcar?
