皇居ぐるり一周7.4km自転車で巡る – 春の東京絶景【東京ライドビュー】2025春

We’ve arrived at Tayasu Gate in the Imperial Palace Outer Garden and Kitanomaru Park. We’ll rent a bike at a bike-share port right outside Exit 1 of Kudanshita Station. Today, I’m going to ride this bike around the Imperial Palace, covering approximately 7.4 km. The camera I’m using is the Insta360 AcePro2, which I introduced before. We’ll start our ride from Kudanzaka Park at the northern end of Chidorigafuchi. The promenade on the left is the Chidorigafuchi Greenway, one of Japan’s most famous cherry blossom spots. Today is March 26, 2025. I thought the cherry blossoms might be in bloom, but it seems a bit early. That’s too bad. I really wanted to see them in full bloom. Four days later, on March 30, the blossoms were almost at full bloom. I’ve also uploaded a video walking along the Chidorigafuchi Greenway for hanami, so please check it out. This is the end of the Chidorigafuchi Greenway. From here, we’ll ride along Uchibori Street. We’ve arrived at the Chidorigafuchi intersection. The moat spreading to the south is Hanzobori. On the left is the Imperial Palace. In the distance, you can also see the National Diet Building. Alright, let’s keep going. From here, we’re on the Imperial Palace running course. Across Uchibori Street, we can see a graceful, elegant building. Ah, that’s it. Let’s stop for a moment and take a closer look. This is the British Embassy in Japan. You can also see the Royal Coat of Arms. It is said that in 1898, British Minister Ernest Satow planted cherry trees in front of the embassy, which led to this area becoming one of Tokyo’s famous cherry blossom spots. We’ve arrived at the starting point of National Route 20, the Koshu Kaido. That means we’re at Hanzomon. Exactly. This is Hanzomon. From Hanzomon of Edo Castle, the route continues through Shinjuku, Hachioji, Kofu, and eventually connects to the Nakasendo at Shimosuwa. This is Hanzomon. It is said to be named after the Hattori Hanzo family, retainers of the Tokugawa clan during the Edo period, and may have served as a gate for evacuation to Koshu in times of emergency. The Koshu Kaido is one of the five main roads maintained by the Edo Shogunate. It’s amazing to think that a road created in the Edo period still exists today and serves as a major national route with many people and vehicles passing through. Let’s continue. The moat on the left is Sakuradabori. The section from here to Sakuradamon Gate offers some of the most scenic views along the Imperial Palace running course. Take your time and enjoy the wide, open scenery. Here we are at Sakuradamon Gate. This is the gate where the Sakuradamon Incident occurred. The Metropolitan Police Department is also nearby. Let’s go through Sakuradamon Gate and continue inside. This is a wide area. This is the Imperial Palace Plaza. Bicycles are not allowed on the gravel areas ahead. There are paved paths where people walk, making it easy to ride. Let’s take a round and continue. This is another wide area. This is Gyoko-dori Avenue, officially Tokyo Metropolitan Route 404, Imperial Palace Front Tokyo Station Line. It’s about 500 meters from the Wadakura Gate intersection in front of the Imperial Palace to the Tokyo Station Central Entrance intersection. It’s a wide, straight road. It is used when the Emperor travels outside the palace, from the Imperial Palace to Tokyo Station. I see. That’s why it feels so wide—it’s almost like a plaza rather than a road. During imperial ceremonies or formal presentations of credentials by foreign ambassadors, multiple carriages travel in procession along this historic avenue. And here we are at the Marunouchi side of Tokyo Station. Tokyo Station’s red brick Marunouchi building, built in 1914, is an important cultural property of Japan. Part of it was destroyed during the war, but restoration work has brought it close to its original appearance. Let’s get back to the Imperial Palace running course. Beyond Kikyo-bori, you can see the Tatsumi Yagura. This double turret in the southeast of Edo Castle is also called the Sakurada Double Turret. It played important roles for observation, defense, and storage of weapons and supplies. We’ll stop briefly for some photos. This area is bustling with visitors from overseas. Yes, it’s close to Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace Plaza, and another reason might be that you can enter the Imperial Palace East Gardens from Otemon Gate, which we passed earlier. You can enter the East Gardens? Yes. Except for Mondays, Fridays, year-end holidays, and special events, it’s open from 9 a.m. to evening. The last entry time varies by season, so check ahead. The East Gardens are part of the former Honmaru, Ninomaru, and part of Sannomaru of Edo Castle, maintained as a garden where you can enjoy history, nature, and culture. It’s not only a tourist spot but also the only area of the Edo Castle center open to the public, making it a highly recommended location. This is Hirakawa Gate, located on the north side of Edo Castle. It served as the main gate to Sannomaru and led to the Ōoku. It’s a wooden bridge that preserves the Edo period design, and the finials on the handrails give a sense of Edo’s elegance. You can also enter the Imperial Palace East Gardens from here. This is the Kitahanebashi Gate, which also provides entry to the East Gardens. Entering here brings you behind the main keep, truly a gate guarding the rear of Edo Castle. The Imperial Palace running route continues along the sidewalk, but this time we’ll cross at the Daikancho entrance of the Shuto Expressway and head to Kitanomaru Park. The last area of this ride view is Kitanomaru Park. Since we’re here, I’d like to ride along the Chidorigafuchi walking path course. It says “No vehicles,” but bicycles are allowed on paved park paths. The narrow, winding paths are exciting to ride. Whoa, careful! The path ends here! Alright, I’ve got this. Phew, that was scary. Yes! Made it safely. Back on the main street! That’s the Budokan. You can see the onion-shaped roof shining. We’ve passed through Tayasu Gate and are now at Kudanshita. How was this 7.4 km Tokyo ride view journey? Despite being in the city center, it offered abundant nature, expansive views, and a rich blend of nature, urban scenery, culture, and history. Along the route, we passed several Tokyo Metro stations and Tokyo Station. Bike-share ports are located near stations and throughout the route. No matter where you start or finish, bike-sharing is very convenient. Combining trains and bike-sharing allows you to discover various Tokyo landscapes. This was the first Tokyo Ride View video. I plan to explore and introduce more areas of central Tokyo in the future. Please subscribe to the channel and give a thumbs up if you enjoyed it.
