계곡에서 혼자 먹고, 놀다 왔습니다 | 계곡 라이딩
Oneness with the object The weather’s been scorching lately. So I’m heading out to a stream. It’s not far. It’s bikeable distance, so it’s still in Gyeonggi Province. Which means today I have to climb Siuri. I’ll ride up Siuri and head to a nearby stream. It’ll be my first time there. But I’ve heard from friends that it’s really nice, and Instagram shows a lot of people going lately. I’ve seen pictures—there’s even a waterfall. So I’m super excited. I think it’s going to be a blast. And you know I’m a master at having fun alone. I packed some watermelon today, and my goggles, and everything else. I thought bringing my cross-country touring bag would be overkill for a stream trip, so instead, I used one of those free bags you get when you buy cycling gear. I loaded it up and headed out. It’s 6 a.m. right now. Thankfully, the sun’s not out yet. It’s nice and cool. There’s even a refreshing breeze. With my top-tube bag back on and my pack on my back, it feels like a cross-country ride again. Should I just keep going to the East Sea? So here I am, watermelon in tow, heading for the stream. Even though I love doing things alone, this will be my first solo stream trip. So I’m half excited and half curious. Let’s go see what a solo stream day feels like! For those unfamiliar with the route to Siuri— here’s a quick rundown: It’s the same direction as going to Yangsu. Paldang Bridge.
Here’s Paldang Bridge. That’s Paldang Bridge. The construction here seems to be dragging on. Always be careful here. I came prepared for a hot day, but with no sun out, this is great. Anyway— when you head to Yangsu, you cross that pretty bridge, Yangsu Iron Bridge. Before crossing it, turn off. You know watermelon at a stream is the best, right? So I really wanted to bring one. And I happened to find a mini watermelon on sale. I grabbed one yesterday and packed it. It’s been in the fridge overnight, so hopefully it’s still cold. Wow. Passing by the nostalgic Neungnae Station. I wonder if anyone’s touring today? But honestly, this feels cooler than when I did the cross-country ride. That was in June, and now it’s August, yet somehow the weather feels cooler. I saw on the news that streams, which used to be completely free to visit, are now sometimes charging entrance fees or only letting in guests of nearby pensions or restaurants. But the stream I’m going to today is open to everyone, free of charge. I’m not sure how deep it is, though. I’ll have to see when I get there. From what I’ve heard, if the water looks a bit green to the eye, it means it’s deep. Since I’m alone, I’ll be extra careful and enjoy the water safely. Playing in the stream is fun, but stream accidents are unfortunately common. And since I’m going solo, I’ll be even more safety-conscious. Since it’s so early in the morning, I might be the only one there when I arrive— you never know. And since it’s my first time, it could be deeper than I expect. So I’ll be as careful as possible. If you ever go to a stream, remember—safety first, fun second! Attention, directionally challenged friends! From here on, focus a bit. Not far ahead, you’ll see a turn to the right. Take that turn. That’ll lead you to the stream. And Yangsu means hot dogs, right? 🌭 That turn also leads to the hot dog place. It’s so nice with no people around today. Feels like I’ve rented the whole bike path. Hope I can rent the stream too. I wish we could rent out the whole valley. Since today isn’t the weekend, we might actually succeed if we’re lucky. Renting the whole valley, but that place seems to be pretty well known, so there’s a high chance people will be there. Right here. If you go straight from here, you reach Yangsu Bridge. That’s Yangsu Bridge. Turn right here. After turning right here, head toward the Water Garden. If you go this way, you’ll see a nostalgic red box, right? Bright Plaza. This is a place you don’t have to visit during the national ride. I didn’t know that and came here, the place where there were lots of bees! I’m passing Bright Plaza now, heading toward the Water Garden. Uh..? Is it this way? This path is so confusing. Is it this way? Probably. I think so. If you go this way, you’ll reach the Water Garden. The Water Garden. Every time I come here, I feel like it’s so beautiful. Here’s the Water Garden! This is a photo spot. There’s a 7-Eleven here, so you turn left here. You have to go out this way. From here, you can ride on the main road, and usually resting at that convenience store is the national route, but I don’t feel like resting yet, so I’ll just keep going. You turn left here, but the traffic light is off. Siuri. Starting from here, Siuri. You’ve entered Siuri, the crime-free village. “Crime-free village Siuri” is really the town’s slogan. You’ll see it clearly when you go by. I’ll show you. Definitely, once I got to Siuri, there’s not a single person around. Hello! Found a bicycle! That person is coming down. But I’m going up. This is a slight uphill. But it’s strange— Why can’t I see the Siuri sign? It should say “Crime-free village Siuri,” right? But I don’t see it. Could it be…? It’s always a slight uphill before you get there! The speedometer says 5% incline. But I think the speedometer is a bit slow to respond. Its reaction feels a little delayed. Now it shows 6%! I think it might be around 7%. It’s 7%! Look. Since the slope just eased a bit, 8%? Is this really 8%? Ah, this is tough. There’s no sun today, but it is humid. Still, it’s not bad. This is reasonable. Wow. You can see valleys everywhere. There’s a valley continuing down below. There it is. Oh, it’s farther than I thought, all the way here. Crime-free village Siuri. Why am I already this tired? I can hear the sound of valley water. I’m going upstream, from the lower to the upper part, right? Or is it? Now that I’m going downhill again, is this downstream? I don’t know, but I guess I’ll find out if I keep going. 🪰
🪰
🪰 The gnats here are crazy. Gnats!~ Go on your way, guys. Arrived here! Not at the valley, though. Arrived at the top of Siuri. I made a GPX file, so I’ll follow it. There’s a convenience store at the 12 o’clock direction here, a GS25. It tells me to turn right here. Shall we go? Let’s check out if there’s anything good to eat at this convenience store. I forgot and only packed watermelon. I only brought watermelon. I didn’t bring any other food. For that valley, I bought some soda and jelly to eat with the watermelon. (packing stuff) Now we have to turn right here. There are so many cars. I need to be careful. Is it for real that there are this many cars? I never imagined there’d be so much traffic. I was surprised because there were so many cars. Oh, there’s a CU here too? There’s a GS below, and a CU above as well. You can pick whichever one you like. Oh, it’s written there! It says “Myojeoksa Valley Road.” It’s written here, right? Myojeoksa Valley Road. There’s even a signboard for the valley. And there’s a cute little uphill ahead. Wow! Looks like the watermelon and soda are shifting to one side. It’s pretty uncomfortable, but I’ll just go like this for now. Wow, my waist is about to twist. Oh! What a total surprise. I thought there wouldn’t even be a sign like this. Welcome! Welcome to Myojeoksa Valley! Myojeoksa, must be an old place. The valley must be super cool. But one thing for sure — now that we’re near the valley, you can already feel the coolness. Feels like the temperature dropped about 5 degrees. Since I’ll probably find the upstream if I keep going up, I’ll go further. (Heading to the clean upstream) Wow! I see it, I see it!!! Can you hear the sound of the valley? The cicadas are singing so loudly that it’s a bit hard to hear the water sound, but we’ve arrived at the valley. This is Myojeoksa. I need to find a good spot. I saw there’s a waterfall here and stuff. Ah, here it is. There’s a waterfall here. All that’s left now is to go in. Where should I put my bike? I can’t leave it here. What should I do? Maybe if I leave it over there and go in, it would be good. Shall we go? I’ll take only what I need and go. (muttering) First, I need to settle in. That waterfall spot looks really tempting. And there’s no one here now. I’ll head there. I have to keep my bike safe. Wow, the water’s so cold! Ah, so refreshing. Even just dipping my calves feels incredibly cool. And just like I expected, there’s no one else here. I’m the only one here. What do you do in this situation? You have to find the perfect spot. It’s really clear. (Overreacting warning)
Ah, my foot, ow! It hurts so much. When you come to a valley during a ride, you get to enjoy this coolness, but there’s a corresponding price to pay, you could say. Foot reflexology like this? You get to experience nature’s foot massage. But it’s kind of a spicy feeling. Whoa. This is no joke. What is going on? I got hungry as soon as I arrived at the valley, so I’m going to start by breaking into the watermelon I brought. Honey apple to eat first thing in the morning? Oh~ but I expected the inside of the watermelon to be really red, but it was so white that I was surprised. I’m scooping it out again with a spoon. Thankfully, the inside is really red, sweet, and delicious. The watermelon juice is insane. Absolutely delicious. Watermelon tastes amazing when you eat it by the valley! It’s so delicious. Eating watermelon in front of a cool waterfall is literally the sweetest experience. That’s just how it was. Surprisingly, it actually tasted sweeter than usual. Since the watermelon was small, I finished it all before getting into the valley. With my energy fully recharged from the watermelon, you can’t go swimming without goggles, right? I brought one with me, which turned out to be a really good choice. So I tried to get in the water, and today, I’m going to become one with the waterfall. I’m going to experience “water and I as one.” Oneness with the object But the water pressure was way stronger than I thought, so I got surprised. (Running away) I realized this isn’t going to work and tried to retreat immediately. Did you guys see that? There’s also a moss slide here, and you can slide down it too. After reloading my goggles, I’m starting round two of becoming one with the water. This time, I’ll take some time for self-reflection. Ugh
🐬 Time to Self-reflection. Wow! Wow! Here I am, a fragile human before the grandeur of nature. It’s no joke, wow. (Nature is great) And I also tried being a frog once. 🐸 The water wasn’t very deep, so swimming was a bit difficult. (Refueling with jelly) I’m… getting… drunk… To be honest, this Myojeoksa is really perfect for coming when there’s no one around, and it’s easy to get to by car, but parking a bike is a bit tricky. If you come to this waterfall zone, your bike won’t be visible from here. So you just have to trust that your bike is safe, trust the people, and enjoy your time. It’s so nice. But there’s no sun today. Without the sun, it’s a bit chilly. Even with a long-sleeve on, it’s still cold. So I hope the sun comes out just a little. If the sun comes out a bit, it would be more fun. Looks like I came here mostly for the food, though. I already ate all the watermelon, and finished all the jelly too. And don’t forget to take your trash with you when you leave. It was definitely a solo spot, but right now it’s been taken over by a group of middle schoolers. My spot got taken away. I got pushed out like this, so I had to retreat for a while. Finally, the sun is starting to come out, and I hope it keeps shining. It’s too cold in the valley without the sun. Many people will probably take vacations in August, and watermelon season is almost over, too, so before summer ends this year, riding to a valley with some watermelon sounds like a great plan. I came alone, but next time I want to come here with friends, which sounds nice. If you’re looking for a nearby valley close to Seoul, I highly recommend Myojeoksa. This waterfall zone is awesome! And the water isn’t very deep, so it’s perfect for playing around. The only downside is that parking a bike is a bit difficult. That’s the only problem. Overall, Myojeoksa was better than expected. It’s a great waterfall spot even for solo trips. If you’re looking for an even more beautiful and fun valley with a waterfall, I highly recommend Myojeoksa. Since the sun didn’t come out that day, I was colder than I expected and couldn’t stay long. That part was a little disappointing, but I hope you visit on a sunny day and get your money’s worth.
