After staying on the main island of Okinawa for 4 days, we will depart from Naha Airport and head to Taketomi Island. Currently, Taketomi Island does not have an airport, so it is not possible to reach it by plane. Cross over to the island by ferry (high-speed boat) from Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal on Ishigaki Island, which is the closest to Ishigaki Island. Ishigaki Island came into view. We landed safely on Ishigaki Island. This time we came to Hoshinoya Taketomi Island, where we were staying for two nights. First, check in at the main building. After checking in, we were guided by cart to the villa where we would be staying. This is the villa where we will be staying this time. It is said that the right side of the stone wall called Himpung, which can be used as a talisman or a blindfold, is the path for the gods and that people enter and exit from the left side. This is another village on the island, with 48 houses that recreate traditional Okinawan architecture. Shisa is placed in Okinawan homes as a guardian deity that serves as a talisman. We received Okinawan tea and sweets as a welcome drink. The villa we will be staying in this time is a type of villa called “Kyangi”. This house can accommodate two people, with fine-grained Ryukyu tatami flooring from the living room to the bedroom giving a cool impression. From the sofa or porch, you can enjoy a variety of flowers and trees, including bougainvillea and hibiscus, that stand out against the blue sky and coral stone walls. Bougainvillea All of the rooms at Hoshinoya Taketomi Island are independent villas. All of them are built in accordance with Taketomi Island’s architectural standards. Each villa is planted with different plants, allowing you to enjoy a unique garden landscape. This time, I would like to tell you about our two-day stay at this Hoshinoya Taketomi Island and how I relaxed on the island. Dinner on the first day of our stay. Actually, I had made a reservation for Okinawa French cuisine in the dining room, but it was apparently already fully booked, so I hurriedly changed my dinner to room service. Since I was with my young son who had a big appetite, we ended up ordering quite a bit from the a la carte menu. We were able to try a variety of standard Okinawan dishes and it was very delicious. It’s bed time. The room had pajamas that looked comfortable. We also have samue and tabi socks to wear over your pajamas. What is this? ? Here are the electrical cords. The next morning we had breakfast in the dining room. There is a wide selection of drinks, including many typical Okinawan drinks. There are four types of breakfast in the dining room, and you can choose the one you like. I chose the “Kunushina Breakfast”. It is a traditional Okinawan jubako breakfast dish, and is said to be eaten during important events. Plenty of locally sourced ingredients were used. It was a wonderful breakfast that allowed us to fully enjoy the remote islands of Okinawa. Today we will take a walk around the island. Taketomi Island is said to be the second most popular island among the Yaeyama Islands after Ishigaki Island. There are abundant coral reefs in the surrounding area, and it is an irresistible place for those who like white sand beaches, blue sea, and tropical resorts. It seems that you can enjoy experiences that are a little different from overseas resorts, such as traditional villages with red tiled roofs, a beach famous for its “star sand”, and walking around in water buffalo carts. Taketomi Island is a small island with a population of about 360 people. The circumference of the island is only 9.2 km, so it is so small that you can walk around it in about an hour. All roads within the village of Taketomi Island are sand roads, not asphalt. It is a road made of white sand brought from the coast and derived from coral reefs. A field wall made of coral limestone called Gugu. We came to the Taketomi Tourist Center to ride Taketomi Island’s famous water buffalo cart. The water buffalo with a hibiscus on its head is so cute! This time, the one who will be taking us on a ride is Yui-kun, a water buffalo. The water buffalo cart tour takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Yui slowly walks down the road where beautiful tropical flowers bloom. We will also pass by the houses where the islanders live. The guide will do his best to entertain you with fun stories. The guide will perform songs from the island. What a peaceful time! We will pass through the back alley of Kanifu, a popular restaurant on the island. Yui-kun, it looks like it’s poop time. lol We are back. I always wanted to ride a water buffalo cart when I came to this island. It was so much fun. I’m glad that my wish came true. It’s snack time for my son, Nile. We decided to rent a bicycle and go around the island. My son Nile rides an ordinary bicycle. This is my first electric bicycle. I chose an electric bicycle because I was worried about myself loosing stamina and left behind by my young son. This is “Atelier Gokoya”, which has been making Yachimun (Okinawa pottery) on Taketomi Island for 600 years. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s closed today. Taketomi Island Star Sand Beach (Kaiji Beach) The transparency of the sea is amazing! I heard that if you do this, the star sand will stick to your palms, so I tried that, but it didn’t seem to yield any results. On to the next destination. We came to West Pier, which is famous for its spectacular view. A white pier stretching into the blue sea. You can also see Iriomote Island in the distance. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see it this time, but the sunset from here is said to be spectacular. It may be a little hard to see, but you can also see fish swimming. We didn’t have any plans to go into the sea, so we didn’t bring a swimsuit. Nile said regretfully, “I wanna get into the sea. I should have brought a swimsuit.” The blue sea as far as the eye can see. I’m glad I came to Taketomi Island. Get back on your bike and head to your next destination. We came to the “Tower of Nagomi”. Nagomi Tower has been registered as a “National Registered Tangible Cultural Property,” and from the top you can see a panoramic view of the red-tiled houses of the village, which has been selected as an “Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.” The red tile roof of the house stands out against the greenery and is very beautiful. This is the only shop on the island that is run by a single grandmother. This is a restaurant “Kanifu”, we were passing through the back roads in a water buffalo cart earlier. Taketomi Island has a population of about 360 people, but since many tourists visit the island, there are several restaurants where you can eat. The menu was full of local Okinawan cuisine. After wondering around the island, we returned to Hoshinoya. At the Yuntaku Lounge, which can be used at any time during your stay, “Jimamy Tofu” will be served between 2:00 pm and 3:50 pm. Jimami tofu is one of the Ryukyu cuisines, and is said to have originally originated as a court dish. You can also see the cute round pool from the Yuntaku Lounge. This lounge is designed as a public space where you can enjoy free drinks, snacks, light meals, small events, and more. There are also cold drinks typical of Okinawa, such as Sanpin tea and Shikuwasa juice. I decided to get a Nespresso coffee. Jimami tofu, Sanpin tea, and Nespresso coffee. It’s the best snack! “Weaving Asobi” allows you to experience weaving using Taketomi Island’s traditional foot-operated wooden loom. We weren’t able to participate because it was a morning activity, but it looked fun. This is the souvenir corner inside the Yuntaku Lounge. There are many items that are typical of Okinawa, starting with Yachimun (Okinawa pottery). Coasters and baskets woven from the island’s natural material, Pandanus. Gourmet products, Hoshinoya Taketomi Island original chinsuko. Hoshinoya Taketomi Island Original Herbal Tea An incense burner in the shape of a white-breasted crucian whale created by Taro Nakatsuji of Sanpin Kobo. The Jimami tofu I had earlier was so delicious that I decided to have another one. Jimami tofu is apparently made from peanuts. You can enjoy two types of soup stock: ginger onion and brown sugar syrup. I also have walnut brown sugar. I enjoyed various flavors of Okinawan sweets Chinsuko. Enjoy a snack on the daybed in the corner of the lounge. There are plenty of books in the lounge, so you can enjoy reading. I found a photo book by a photographer named Katsuhisa Otsuka. This is a photo collection of the beautiful scenery and culture of Taketomi Island. There are many photos with colorful colors typical of Okinawa. The blue sea of Taketomi Island. Really beautiful. The concert called “Yunagi no Uta” has begun. This concert will be held here from 16:30 to 17:00 in each location. At “Yunagi no Uta,” you can enjoy traditional songs and shamisen performed by island performers. He also played some songs that I knew. This song is “Nada Sou Sou”! A precious time where you can relax and enjoy Okinawan snacks while listening to Okinawan folk songs. And this song is “Shimauta” by THE BOOM. Thank you very much for your wonderful time. Leave Yuntaku Lounge and return to the villa. It seems that there are other guests, but I hardly encounter anyone. In fact, I have no sense of direction, so I often take the wrong route when going back and forth between my villa, Yuntaku Lounge, and the main building. My son was disappointed, but the scenery of the similar villas, stone walls, and white sandy roads made me get lost. This is dinner on the second day. Tonight we will have “shimanabe”. Just like last night, you will have it in your room, so the staff will prepare it for you. The “citrus-scented island hotpot” is a limited menu available from winter to spring. A shabu-shabu style hot pot with Agu pork and Kuroge Wagyu beef served in a Shikuwasa-fragrant soup stock. It is said that you can fully enjoy the flavor of high-quality meat along with the herbs and leafy vegetables that are in season in winter. It is said that in Taketomi Island, where there were no doctors in the past, herbs and vegetables were essential to living a healthy life. Herbs and vegetables are called “nuchigusa” and have been used for food, clothing, and shelter, as medicine, and as materials for dyeing and weaving and folk tools. If you like, you can make it even more delicious by combining it with condiments such as Shikwasa pepper or Pibartu (island pepper). Yes, it’s delicious! Finishing off with Yaeyama soba and island tofu. I’m full. Thank you for the meal. After dinner, I revisited Yuntaku Lounge to enjoy an awamori cocktail at the “Evening Moment” event. Before I knew it, it was raining outside. After having a cocktail, we returned to the villa. The night falls quietly on Taketomi Island while listening to the sounds of nature. Good morning. Breakfast on the second day. Nile’s breakfast is “cereal breakfast”. And I had a southern French-style breakfast called the “Sea Breeze Breakfast.” Actually, this morning we had to catch a flight back to Tokyo from Ishigaki Island, so we didn’t have time to have a leisurely breakfast like usual. So I wasn’t able to film enough video of breakfast. Sorry. A Hoshinoya staff member advise us, since you can arrive at Ishigaki Airport in less than an hour, why don’t you delay the shuttle bus to Taketomi Island Port and enjoy breakfast leisurely? However, in consideration of unforeseen circumstances, aiming to arrive at the airport two hours early we hurriedly finished breakfast and left Hoshinoya, But in conclusion, I’m glad we came out early. There is a long line at the check-in counter at Ishigaki Airport! Because the previous day’s flight cancelation or something, there was a rush of customers trying to catch this day’s flight. In the end, even though we arrived at the airport two hours early, we were barely able to board the plane. (sweat) I mentioned in a previous video that one of the purposes of my temporary return to Japan was to get revenge for my trip to Okinawa, But this stay in Okinawa was more than just revenge but the best. Thanks to this trip, Okinawa, which used to be my least favorite prefecture in Japan, has now become my most favorite prefecture! It’s time to say goodbye to the blue sea of Taketomi Island . Since we live in the States, we cannot easily come to Okinawa. So I feel a little sad thinking that I will never be able to see this beautiful sea again. What did you think of this video of Taketomi Island? I would be happy if you could leave your thoughts on the video in the comments section. Thank you very much for watching the video until the end.
