旧北陸道を自転車で:今庄から廃村二ツ屋を通り笠取峠へ 福井県南越前町 [4K]
This video documents a cycling journey along a historic section of the Old Hokuriku Kaidō in Fukui Prefecture, filmed in June 2025.
The ride begins near the Hino River in the southern part of Imajo (Minamiechizen), then passes the site of the old Futatsuya checkpoint before ascending through the narrow valley ominously known as “Kubikiri-dani” (Neck-Cutting Valley). After reaching Kasatori Pass, the descent continues past the Imajo 365 Ski Resort and the former post town of Itadorijuku, eventually arriving at Imajo Station.
This route offers a unique combination of historical atmosphere, quiet mountain roads, and rural landscapes once traveled by Edo-period wayfarers.

Guide to the Hokurikudo (Northern Land Route)
This is the Futsuya village in Imajo Town. The road before you is called the Hokurikudo, which was opened in the 7th year of the Tencho era (830 CE) during the Heian period by Kamitsukeno Mutsu no Kimi Yama.
Before this, the route over Yamanaka Pass was used, but despite making a large detour along the coastline and including waterways in the journey, making the overall route relatively easy, it involved significant time loss. Therefore, travelers used the Hokurikudo route over Kinome Pass.
After the opening of the Hokurikudo, Futsuya gradually developed as a post town and flourished greatly during the Edo period. (The post town was located about 2 kilometers upstream from the current location.)
During the Tenmei era (1781-1788), there were a total of 46 households (15 chief farmer households, 24 miscellaneous households, and 7 temporary resident households), including one wholesale agent (tonya), 5 inns (hatagoya), and 5 teahouses, with a population of 250 people.
The Futsuya post town contains remains of milestone markers (ichirizuka), horse disposal and bloodletting sites, public notice board sites, the site where Emperor Meiji stayed, wholesale agent remains, and other historical sites.
Notable people who traveled this Hokurikudo route include Ki no Tsurayuki, Fujiwara no Tametoki, Murasaki Shikibu, Dogen, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Rennyo Shonin, Nitta Yoshisada, Ashikaga Takauji, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Matsuo Basho, the Mito Tengu Party led by Takeda Kounsai, Emperor Meiji, and Iwakura Tomomi.
