旧島津氏玉里邸庭園 Tamazato Residence Garden【Rolling Strolling Kagoshima】

Hello everyone. It’s ETcharinko! Thank you for watching. It’s a refreshing day during Golden Week. I ride a bicycle and visit the Daimyo Garden in Kagoshima City. Please enjoy until the end. Now we’re at “former Shimadzu clan Tamazato residence garden.” This black gate that serves as the entrance was built in 1887. During the state funeral of Hisamitsu Shimadzu, known as the Father of the Nation, his coffin was carried from here to the cemetery. This road in front of us is called the State Funeral Road, and was built at the same time. Admission is free. There are 2 gardens, the upper garden and the lower garden, and the lower garden and the tea room are open to the public. The upper garden cannot be seen because it is located on the grounds of Kagoshima Girls’ High School. But it seems like it’s made public from time to time. Tamazato Residence was built as a villa in 1835 by Narioki, the 27th head of Shimadzu. It was a vast mansion with a frontage of 200m and a depth of 147m. The name Tamazato is derived from “Gyokuin”, another name for Narioki, and later became a place name. The Tamazato residence was destroyed by fire during the Seinan War in 1877. It was later rebuilt by Narioki’s son Hisamitsu. However, it was destroyed in the Pacific War in 1945. In 1951, Kagoshima City purchased the site. Kagoshima Girls’ High School moved here in 1959. In 2007, it was designated as a national scenic spot. Sengan-en is famous as a daimyo garden of the Shimazu clan in Kagoshima, and this place is not very popular as a tourist destination. Although it is small, you can enjoy a quiet and leisurely stroll. This tea room was rebuilt in 1879. The vermilion walls have been restored to their original color. Even now, it seems to be a popular spot for tea ceremonies and pre-wedding photoshoot. I wanted to take a break here with some Japanese sweets and matcha tea. The thing here is called a “takamasu,” which is said to be used to adjust water pressure and distribute water. At the Tamazato residence, water was drawn from a spring 540 meters away. It was extremely rare at the time. You can see the girls’ high school building and playground from here. This large stone is 3m high. It is said that what was found underwater on a rocky shore was divided into 53 pieces, transported, and patched together again. After being soothed by the dazzling fresh greenery and the murmuring of water, I would like to go for a snack. There was Akashiya, which is famous for Karukan, nearby, so I went there. I’m glad you can eat in here. I was planning on eating some Japanese sweets, but when I saw the strawberry shortcake, I decided I wanted Western sweets instead. Well, that’s it for today. See you soon!
