「エディ・メルクスだ!」😜

interestingly I actually did ask Eddie MKS once at a campan YOLO function whether or not he wished he’d had compact gears and he said when I was cist I didn’t need a compact actually I reckon he’d have gone quicker if he’d had one I didn’t say it to his face it’s Ed bloody MKS but that’s what I was thinking

Merckx didn’t need compact gears to feel the speed – but what is really the difference between Campagnolo’s latest Super Record versus the iconic Nuovo Record, ridden by the legend himself? Watch the full video on our channel to find out! 👀

  1. Gear inches are gear inches, regardless of how you obtain it, big chainring + larger cogs is same as smaller ring + smaller gears, a compact crank on its own is not going to make you go faster

  2. Old school pro cyclists averaged 55-75 rpms on long mountain climbs, in lowest gear 42t/24t – 46". Conversely modern day cyclists average 75-95 rpms on the same climbs in lowest gear 36/28 – 34".
EPO (which wasn't available during Merckx's era) works best at higher RPMs.

  3. Merckx had the right physiology to dominate on the bikes of his time. He could climb the mountains in an incredibly high gear. I am not sure how many of today's pro could match him on bikes of that time. Looking the other way around, I don't know if his physiology would win with today's bikes and team tactics.

  4. When I was in the inside the industry we frequently run into each other. One day we sat near each other in a flight from a Vegas trade show to Europe. The fight was pretty empty so I went by to say hello. He always wondered who I worked for and before long he wanted me to hook him up with Panaracer for tires. I was stunned when we traded business cards cause his card was Massively Big, as if it was a Joke. But nope, it was his actually his norm card. I still have it. He was very nice and he asked a lot of questions about what I did cause he always saw me everywhere as I worked for the Japan Group back then. Nice person.
