島名の由来は、日本神話に登場する神々が集まった場所という説もあり、歴史と神話が交錯する興味深い場所です。

透明度日本一に選ばれたこともある透き通った海、東京名湧き水57選に選ばれた豊かな湧き水、
花の百名山にも選ばれた豊かな山など、自然に溢れた美しい島には海も山も楽しめるスポットが満載。
特に夜に見られる満天の星は美しい夜空を守る「星空保護区」に、東京都で初めて認定された島です。

本島に比べて夏は涼しく冬は暖かいのが特徴ですが、冬は季節風の西風が強く吹く日も多いそうです。トレッキングなど、島の散策が目当ての場合は、平均気温が約18度～21度前後の5月・6月がおすすめ。海水浴が目的なら7月・8月がおすすめ。

アクセスはなんと東京にある調布空港からたったの45分、高速ジェット船で3時間で行くことができます。
ゆったり夜行の大型客船であれば神津島まで約9時間55分。
