『突撃!隣のBIKE CHECK Vol.29〜ROCKPOINT COFFEE 編~

I’m Kaisei from Blue Lug Hatagaya I’m Daichi We are currently in Kagoshima We came here in January for a bike ride We rode with the person who we are about to introduce He always takes care of us and has very cool bikes, so we’re gonna do a bike check Surprise! Bike Check Rockpoint Edition We have arrived at the Rockpoint Coffee shop Let’s go ahead and go inside Hello Hi there! Long time no see This is Iwasaki-san from Rockpoint Coffee Hello, I am Iwasaki from Rockpoint Coffee You are a coffee shop? Yup, we are a coffee shop I heard you also like to ride bikes so we will be checking your bike later on Please check I am spotting some bicycle related stuff on the shelves, right as we get in the shop Yup, I just love bikes I ride a lot The reason why I opened a coffee shop is actually because of bikes You had something to do with Rapha right? So I would often ride up the mountain near by with a road bike I also like photography, so I was taking photos of the view and posting them Someone from Rapha Japan liked my content and we became close Which lead to me riding the Prestige event I also made some routes for their other event where we rode that route in a group and had some coffee Ever since I’ve been collecting bike x coffee products like this Chris King! That’s an espresso tamper right? Yes, I started collecting them They’re very fun I’ve seen this color but I’ve never seen the Rapha x Chris King one in my life I first didn’t know that it was made from a headset but I realized after I got more into bikes so I started looking them online and found them You know what this is Kaisei? It’s the… Campy thing right? It’s a wine bottle opener Campagnolo used to be a company who made bottle openers They shifted to bike products later on Let’s talk about the access Many people watching might live out of Kagoshima Where can we find your shop? It’s in the south of Kagoshima city We are located in a 30, 40 minute distance from the center Very close to the last stop of the Kagoshima tram That’s the location explained roughly There are many grandads and grannies in this part of town The nearest train station would be Sasanuki? Correct. There used to be a Katana blacksmith right around the corner, long long time ago The blacksmith’s name was Sasanuki It wasn’t so far to ride from Blue Lug Kagoshima to here It was like 8km Yup, that sounds about right It probably only takes like 30 minutes for you guys The route was easy too *struggling to avoid awkward silence* It’s an easy distance for cyclists yup, for sure You also have a parking lot right? Yup, one in the back and a few others near by Alright, shall we check out the shop? They’ve got some very cool posters Geoff Mcfetridge art hanging on the wall Are these basically your own collections? My previous job was going to US and buying second and clothes or miscs so I love this type of stuff like, music stuff and various cultures Did you make all the interiors? Yes, with a help from a carpenter Wooow I assisted him This is your second location right? I heard the first location was just next door Yup, I moved literally from next door It’s been six months working at this location I visited Blue Lug Kagoshima for the second time last year It was my first time visiting Rock Point and we went on a coffee ride together with Aze the manager of BL Kagoshima I remember getting stoked by seeing this… I saw this Lightweight hanger This thing right here I was like “Uwah!” Like, I knew about the brand but I never seen it in person I believe they chopped a rim into pieces and made the hangers Lightweight is a handmade carbon wheel company from Germany Pro racers would buy their products and would scrape off the logo and race on them Super high performance wheels So that just caught my eyes and I thought “This place rules!” No one ever notices it Well, I was amazed Thank you Bike Check? Shall we? He’s got two bikes, but let’s start off with this… Endpoint bike Let’s see his build When did you get this bike? I got this last year, when I decided to move buildings I think it’s a rare bike to see around here Handmade? Yes, that is right I didn’t know about this brand until then It says “Made In USA” right here You said it’s a brand in the east coast? Vermont I heard you’ve riding gravel, and doing long distances on this thing If you look at the chain stay… You can see the model name, “Coffee Grinder” Oh yeah! That’s a perfect name for your bike I’m assuming that it was named like this from all the dirt that gets on the frame, while riding off-road, since the dirt looks like coffee grounds I’m just assuming Makes sense though So it doesn’t make sense to keep it clean Ah, I see So you’ve been ripping on it huh? I’ve seen you ride this one a lot I think you were riding this on the new years ride too You were also doing like a 200km ride, weren’t you? Yeah, so my parents’ house is in Miyazaki So I just decided to pay them a visit with my bike That’s amazing to ride all the way to Miyazaki The bike feels great riding long distance 700 wheels, with…what size tires? 38C Teravail Rampart tires It’s a rather slick tire, looks great for on road For sure Ritchey cage Very cool What’s your favorite part about this bike? I like the color I also like the subtle design of the frame And… I just love this whole build I had Aze pick out the parts for me and I’m very happy with it Can’t go wrong with Aze selected parts! Very reliable man He’s actually right there I love this right here DIY style I lost the mount so I put some tape on it to hold It’s funny how well it holds up Has a little play on it, but it’s good Thank you! We actually have another bike to check This is my second commuter The other one is the original I see! Alright, second bike…way different! As you can see, this is a really cool build What’s the story behind this bike? Well, it was originally a full suspension Specialized MTB MTBs became huge when I was about 20 years old All the cool people were riding them So I hopped on the trend and bought one I rode this one to get around back then, I just moved to Kagoshima Since Kagoshima is surrounded by nature, My friends would take me on a down hill ride and I got hooked But I eventually took it apart and kept the frame The fifth anniversary of my coffee shop is around the corner but I wanted a bike when I stated my business, for commuting and I had this frame I also found out about this Clydesdale Cargo Fork I went and talked with Aze and Blue Lug happened to have them wooow Aze picked all the parts for me The Mongoose pedals are from the original build Also the cranks That’s pretty much it. All the new parts were “omakase” Installing the Clydesdale Fork is a really good way of – putting life back to an old bike I was always watching your builds with this fork There are a lot of Surly builds with the fork as well, but I also saw some builds with vintage MTB so I thought it might work and it did! This is exactly what Matt the founder of Crust- Wanted people to do with this fork so this is like an ideal build in my opinion I would transport ice and milk with this It’s a “milk crate” after all The day that Blue Lug Kagoshima opened- I was there to help out the shop and this bike was one of the first bikes to work on and that’s when we met for the first time Yup, I installed the milk crate You were very stoked on the build I was so happy to see such a cool bike in Kagoshima! The milk crate have been on this bike ever since you installed it for me So you’ve been putting groceries in the crate? Yup. Also, I have a daughter so I would take her to pre-school before work so I put here in the crate and push the bike to pre-school. I don’t ride because it’s sketchy Daigoro “Lone Wolf and Cub” style My daughter is always hyped to go to school Many people would also put their dogs on the milk crate Yeah, I get asked about this bike from pet owners I’m sure the fork is your favorite part of this bike, but do you have any other things you like about this bike? Well, it’s not exactly a “favorite part”, but I love the fact that Shaun Palmer rode this bike back then I once saw a photo or a video of him- ripping down a hill with this bike he was so sick he had a Slayer logo on his helmet and stuff which is one of the big reasons I chose this bike But he actually started riding for Intense right after I bough the bike I was a bit bummed out, but I really like this bike Shaun is super cool B903 Bullmoose Bars with Outershell bar bag I use this bag for both bikes I would switch back and forth They’re easy to attach Yeah, this opening helps a lot too They’re great for stowing small stuff Thank you very much! Well, Iwasaki-san Do you have any words for the audience? Oh! Wait! Iwasaki-san and Aze are… doing coffee outside meetings right? Yup, it’s not a weekly thing but we go on a coffee group ride on Sundays when it’s nice out The rides look so much fun We would go to Sakurajima or other good spots near by You two went on the ride before right? Yeah! The first time I met you was on the ride It was the day that I arrived in Kagoshima from Fukushima I borrowed a bike from Aze I’d love to go on that ride one day Beautiful scenery We are doing another one this month I’d love to ride with everybody before the rain season May is the best season for cycling in Kagoshima highly recommend riding in this time of the year The ride is wonderful, but come to Rockpoint Coffee if you visit Kagoshima Yes please Aze’s drinking apple juice There’s few things I like about this place That Lightweight hanger and also the ILE bags I’ve been a fan of their bags for a long time All the small details are nice You can buckle up big boxes with the straps The flaps are versatile We had an oil heater in the shop in winter so I would carry an empty oil tank with this bag Might have looked like a crazy man, but it works I like how the tables look I also like the old gum shelf Yup, I found it in a random stationary shop It says all the flavorers on it, like “blueberry” I use the shelf as a shop card shelf for other local businesses This makes me so happy Blue Lug x Vans shoe box They actually have tools inside! Amazing! That’s perfect This is a cool item that Iwasaki-san uses It’s an ankle band… but it turns into… and now it’s a cup holder So I made these with a friend that works with leather from Adventure Books & Crafts He’s my good buddy and he would make these fun and convenient items Not sure we’re gonna sell them but it’s a fun little project Can’t wait to see the leather wears out Yup! It’s already showing some wear It works perfect for ankle bands too been using it a lot Alright, so… We checked Iwasaki-san’s bike from Rock Point Coffee! Thank you!

  3. Love the shop vibe. I’m sure there’s always beautiful music playing in the shop too if the owner wears a Meditations t shirt. Thanks BL and Mr Aze. Hopefully I’ll visit one day.
