ついにホイアンに到着🇻🇳 南から北へ EP. 7/15

It’s day 11 of our motorbike adventure across Vietnam, riding from south to north. Today, we make the final push to Hoyan, where we’ll face the most challenging roads yet, roast in the hottest weather so far, and take all the breaks before rolling into what might just be our favorite city in Vietnam. [Music] So, we’ve been driving for just over 2 hours now. We left the hotel just after 9:00 and we haven’t eaten yet. We just hadn’t really passed a whole lot of places. We did try and stop a couple of times, but they weren’t serving food. I don’t know if they weren’t serving food yet or not at all, but now finally we’ve arrived in the town that was one further than where we stopped last night. This town was kind of like our stretch goal if things had gone really well and timing was great. So, we’ve pulled off the side of the road and we’ve ordered some chicken and rice. That’s about as far as we’ve gotten with what we’re getting. So, we’ll see what comes. And then Dave was also able to order some black coffees with some glasses of ice. And we have our own milk. So, we’re going to add our own milk to it. and have some coffee, too. Much nicer drive today. Just as hot, but it’s not just straight roads. We’re actually like in the mountains now or between the mountains now. So, it’s quite nice. The roads are getting a little bit worse. I don’t know if they’re not repaired as often. It’s definitely a lot more rural. Oh, that tastes really good. This is better than Oh, I might get a second one, actually. Really? Yeah. [Applause] That’s not bad. I really like mine. I don’t think I’m as excited about it as Dave was. Maybe it’s just a difference in our milk flavoring, but it’s still a good coffee. This is a broth, I believe, cuz we’ve had it at other places. Not this large, but um I think you can just straight up drink the broth and then you put the greens with your rice, which is what I’ve been doing. Not too bad. Chicken here, super common in Vietnam. Not my favorite in the way that it’s presented. Mainly because it’s two things. One, you can just see the full foot. I’m sure that’s a big thing for some people. They love it. Not a big fan. The second thing is is um there’s also like it’s also for the beef too. They’ll have like a skin layer and then in the skin you can still see the hair coming out. So another thing that not a big fan of, but a nice thing is you can kind of just bypass that a lot of the time by just uh not eating the skin and not eating the feet. That’s kind of what I’m doing right now. You can just kind of peel off the skin layer a little bit. And then the back here is just all chicken. So just don’t eat the bone. And the chicken itself is pretty good. So I’ve been doing the same. Just pulling apart the chicken, taking out the bones, and adding it to my rice. We have another couple hours. We’ll probably try to stop off somewhere else to get maybe a little bit more coffee. And we’re finally out of like the really flat terrain, so it’ll be nice to see some of these like hills and jungle and everything else. I don’t know what’s happening over here. I think Dave’s talking to them through a translate app. I think they might be slightly offended that we didn’t eat the chicken feet. I do feel guilty and I do feel really bad when we don’t eat the food because I don’t want to offend, but it’s just not in me to eat the skin and the feet and all the things. I’m just I’m really not adventurous. Dave’s the more adventurous one and even he wasn’t feeling that. But yeah, we just don’t want to offend. But it’s really hard when you just don’t know what you’re going to get and it arrives and then you just do your best. So, we still have just about well, the GPS says just over 3 hours of driving, which probably translates into 5 to 6 hours, including stopping and just the fact that we’re at a lower rate of speed than what the speed limit is, especially on those hills. The bikes just do not want to go over like 40 up a hill. So, we have two options really for getting into Hoyan. At about 15, 20 minutes, we’re going to come to like a fork in the road. We can either go right down the QL14, which stays kind of more rural and a lot more switchbacky. It’s technically a shorter distance to drive, but it’s going to take longer by about 10 minutes. So, really not that’s pretty negligible. Or we go to the left and we still end up on windy roads for a bit, but then it changes into the CT2, I think, which is more of an established highway, so it’s likely to be busier, but also kind of just like straight for the most part. And after some humming and hawing and back and forth, uh I think we’re going to do the QL14. Mainly just because it’s been a more enjoyable drive today. And once you get on those highways, it can get just feel pretty like monotonous and brutal. So yeah, I think that’s what we’re going to do. And hopefully it just doesn’t take us forever. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. N. [Music] [Music] I mean, who doesn’t love a good lake? It is so hot right now. I honestly would not hesitate to jump in if this wasn’t a dam. Just makes you want to go for a swim. I would like to go over it. Yeah. So, that is on the one side of the dam. And now this bridge that we’re on is the dam. And it is actually surprising just how far down it goes. [Music] Wow. [Music] [Music] Wait on us. There was two routes, one main highway, one not main highway. We took the not main highway because we thought less traffic, you know, shorter distance, a little like it’s only like 10 minutes longer. We first pulled up and there was a notice on the bridge saying some of the bridges are weakened on this route. So just like limit the weight of the trucks to whatever and can’t have a bus more than 16 people. Perfect. That’s fine. Then we get on to it and it’s like construction. I just keep waiting for the construction to end. I think we’ve been going for about an hour now, hour and a half and I think we’ve gone 8 km. They’ve ripped up all the road and it’s just like dirt, rocks. At this point, I’m just worried I’m going to lose a tire. We have just under 2 hours of driving left to get to the coast. Uh about 70 km left. Oh, this red car that’s about to pass, you’ll see it in the background. They actually got stuck. Uh they bottomed out on a section of the road. So, we had to stop for a little bit while uh a couple people directed them on how to get off of it [Applause] again. And there could be something ahead up there now. So, we’ll find out what all that honking is about. What’s your guess? Oh, some fresh new hell of road. So, my guess was just going to be like goats or something. But, but I mean, it’s 34° right now. UV of 10. I’m pretty certain I’m dehydrated. But the alternative is this bottle of water, which is so warm. It’s like bath water. Yuck. I know. That makes it even worse when you call it bath water. I know. There’s no temperature change between it entering my mouth and my mouth. I’m well, first off, completely dripping sweat and then completely covered in just a thick layer of dust from the roads. It’s about to get worse, too. Um, we passed by really go. Okay. Oh, yeah. Well, holy hell. So, it’s maybe been what, 5 minutes, not even since we said we should get going. Mainly because there was a big digger contraption coming and it was kicking up all this dust and it still ended up passing us before we got going. It’s just it’s so hot out and it’s just so rough and we’re pretty sore and to get a little too personal getting some pretty intense chafe on like the back of my legs up by my butt just probably from wearing the jeans and it being so sweaty. So, what’s funny is yesterday I was talking about at least on Instagram I was talking about ice cream after a long day of driving is is very needed and today it’s actually just partway through the drive the ice cream is needed. So, Oh. Mhm. Oh, yeah. I needed this. 6,000 dong each. That’s like050 cents, not even. I’ve taken half a dairy pill for this, so you bet I’m probably having more than one. This is also one of the first places that we found cold drinks at in quite a while. And as Dave mentioned before, our water is hot, so it makes it hard to stay hydrated. The fact that we could stop and get some nice cold drinks, very much needed. Very happy about this. And we still have probably what, like two hours on the GPS, so probably still quite a few. Hopefully, we’ll make it there by sundown. This was very much needed. So, we’ve been going for 5 hours already, but we’ve still I guess only made it about 2 and 1/2 hours of GPS time and there’s still 2 hours left. So, that could be another probably like 4 hours depending. I guess it depends if and when we actually get to like better roads. It’ll probably get faster again. But these roads are just freaking brutal. The scenery is gorgeous. just like it’s a beautiful drive, but it has just been so rough on the body and just like the constant shaking and the all the dust. It’s been it’s been tough. This has probably been the toughest day physically. I think there’s definitely been tougher days mentally and there’s been some really good days of driving. I don’t know. This is This day just feels all over the place. I’m not sure how to feel about it, but I’m happy right now cuz I’m in a hammock with some ice cream. [Music] Heat. Heat. After 7 and 1 half long and painful hours, we finally made it to our hotel here in Hoyen. And so far, it actually seems like it’s a really nice place. We painstakingly looked through AOD for like an hour last night trying to find a place that seemed to live up to its rating. Um, a lot of places had like high star ratings, but then recent reviews were really bad. So, I don’t know. I was just stressed about it. But, we booked it and when we arrived, he upgraded us. So, yeah, the room is beautiful. We got two beds, really nice bathroom right next to a pool. I fully intend on going swimming in that tomorrow. Yeah. So, we’re pretty happy while also exhausted and sore. Now, we’ve come out to a place called Dingo Deli. So, we took a grab because our butts just cannot handle being on our bikes anymore today. We came to this place specifically because they have an entire gluten-free menu and they’ve got like buns for burgers, pasta, pizza dough that’s gluten-free. So, I’m incredibly excited. And we both got burgers and then Dave also got a grilled cheese because we’ve literally eaten like basically rice and a few pieces of chicken today. We are starving. Yeah. Hopefully, it won’t be too long await. And we’re pretty darn excited. Oh, those are good fries. So, I got the American burger. Comes with fries. And then I also got a grilled cheese. The grilled cheese was really uh inexpensive and it said it came with white bread. So, I was like, that’s probably going to be a small grilled cheese. Pretty big grilled cheese. The ketchup on that. Delicious. Huge burger. First off, looks like it’s got lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, and the patty. Everything about this meal very good. We’ve been eating exclusively soup and rice and chicken for the last 5 days. I want to say it’s nice every once in a while to get something that’s very iconically like western food. Grilled cheese, burger, fries. Got my little gluten-free flag. And I’m really excited cuz I did ask before I ordered if it was going to be an actual bun or just like slices of bread cuz I’ve seen that before. I know it’s an actual like gluten-free bun. So, I’m very curious as to how it is. And then, yeah, it looks like it’s got some sauce, some onions, pickles, tomato. Like, it’s it’s the same as Dave’s just with a gluten-free bun instead. Oh, that’s so good. You can tell that that like that burger patty is like freshly made. It’s got so much flavor. Oh my gosh. And the bun’s pretty good, too. Like, it’s kind of hard, but not in like a stale kind of way. I don’t know how to describe it and I’m too hungry to describe it, but it kind of reminds me of a tea biscuit. So, yeah. So good. Join us next time as we explore the charming city of Hoyanne. Think peaceful rice fields, coconut basket boat rides, the bustling night market, and so much more. Thanks so much for watching, and we’ll see you in the next one.

Today on our motorbike journey across Vietnam, we braved what turned out to be the toughest stretch yet—7.5 grueling hours of heat, dust, and broken roads from Pleiku to Hội An. This was the kind of day that tests your patience, endurance, and bike tires.

We kicked off late morning without breakfast, riding for hours without finding any food until we stumbled into a small mountain town—our “stretch goal” from the night before. There, we finally grabbed plates of chicken and rice and crafted some make-shift iced coffees with our own milk, grateful for even the simplest comforts. The scenery was a nice shift: winding through lush jungle and rolling hills rather than the endless straightaways of the previous days.

The heat, though, was relentless—over 34°C with brutal UV. Roads were often just ripped-up gravel, and one section slowed us to just 8 km/h over nearly two hours. We watched cars bottom out, clouds of dust kick up, and joked about “bathwater” warm bottles of hydration. At one point, sitting roadside with ice cream and cold drinks felt like salvation.

Eventually, after what felt like forever, we rolled into Hội An—sweaty, sore, and completely wiped. But the reward was immediate: a charming hotel (with a free upgrade!), a soft bed, and plans to dive straight into the pool the next morning. We ended the day at Dingo Deli, devouring gluten-free burgers, grilled cheese, and fries—our first Western meal in what felt like ages. It was indulgent and exactly what we needed.

Next up, we’ll slow down and explore the beauty of Hội An itself—boats, lanterns, food, and calm coastal vibes await.
