The Shimanami Kaidō is one of the most iconic and beautiful cycling routes in the world!
It’s a 70-kilometer (around 43 miles) route connecting Japan’s main island of Honshu (starting in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture) to the island of Shikoku (Imabari, Ehime Prefecture).
What makes it so famous for cycling:
• You ride across six islands via a series of massive suspension bridges, with dedicated cycling lanes.
• Gorgeous views of the Seto Inland Sea, dotted with small islands.
• Well-marked paths with plenty of rest stops, cafés, local art, and even accommodation for cyclists.
• Suitable for beginners to pros — you can choose short sections or do the full ride.
• Bike rental and ferry services make it super flexible (you can even rent in Onomichi and drop off in Imabari).
• The bridges themselves are an experience — some are among the longest in the world!
Many cyclists say it’s the best cycling experience in Asia, and one of the bucket list rides globally.
