Hinohara is closed. So, Yuzurihara it is ⛰️🚴
00:32:40 – closed road (Hinohara)
00:46:30 – enjoying the view and contemplating aero water bottles
02:07:35 – having a break at the lake (Tsukui)
02:54:40 – very nice restaurant
Needed to make the most of the last few days of my ‘vacation’, especially since most of it was spent working! (ironic, I know). My therapy: heading west from Tokyo to the mountains for some challenging rides.
The plan for this ride was an ambitious loop west of Tokyo: tackle the scenic Hinohara Kaido climb, enjoy the descent, circle around Lake Tama and Okutama, and finally head back home towards Ikebukuro.
However, the mountains had other plans! Arriving at the base, I discovered the Hinohara climb was closed. Time for Plan B! Thinking on my feet (or pedals!), I spontaneously rerouted towards the Yuzurihara Pass. It turned out to be a beast of its own, rewarding me with plenty of unexpected climbing – definitely got my mountain fix!
The journey eventually led me through Hachioji, and from there it was the long haul back into central Tokyo via Route 20. Join me for this ride where plans changed, but the adventure (and the elevation gain!) remained.

In order to go from Itsuka-ichi to Okutama-ko, when you reach Tachibana-bashi (circa 0:13:20), turn not left but right. Far less traffic, good scenery, more challenging, more fun.
Incidentally, people can't say they weren't warned of the closure. There are at least three overhead signboards between central Itsuka-ichi and Tachibana-bashi, and each warns of the closure (or anyway did four days ago); for example circa 0:1:55.
