[ 2024 Shikoku 1000 ] [ 四囯一周 ] [ Day 3 – Tokushima to Shishikui ] [ 德島至宍喰 ]
Day 3 – Tokushima to Shishikui
Riding distance: 96 kilometers Total distance: 194 kilometers
Today it should be about 90 kilometers, but there were several climbs of 100-200 meters, so had breakfast early and tried to start at 7:30.
The weather forecast was for dense clouds, and the weather cleared up in the afternoon, with only a few drops of rain leaving Tokushima. At about 9 o’clock, I arrived at today’s first stamping point, Road Station Kubo no Sato Nakagawa, and the next stamping point was already more than 30km away.
Today I rode along National Highway 55 for most of the day. After about 40km, because there was the free Hiwasa Road, most cars were using the expressway. Therefore, over 10km of National Highway 55 was basically free of traffic except for a few local residents or those who cycling or walking the O’Henro.
I started to see people walking the O’Henro and met a foreign woman at a rest pavilion. The others were all Japanese. After about 60km, I arrived at Hiwasa, the second stamped road of the day, where I had lunch and rest.
This was the main route of O’henro for travelers. Not far away was Yakuoji Temple, no. 88 temple of the pilgrims. After leaving the road station, I saw that there was a hut for O’henro walkers, which was well-equipped with bed and toilet. After leaving Hiwasa, I turned left on Prefectural 147 to go to the coast. There were multiple climbs, including a 180m climb.
There were no residential buildings along the way, only a few observation decks, and not many vehicles. About 5km away from the destination, I returned to National Highway 55, and arrived at the Michinoeki Shishikuionsen at about 4p.m. I originally planned to book a hot spring hotel next door, but it was always fully booked, so I settled for a nearby guest house.
The guest house has only two rooms. The hostess speaks English and breakfast is included. Since I didn’t want to go out to eat, I sent an email asking for dinner to be prepared for me. The hostess was preparing the dinner and it took more than an hour to serve one dish after another.
