The pilgrimage to the 88 places on Shikoku was born out of the desire of people to follow the spiritual practices of Kobo Daishi by following the path of the hechi that he had followed in his ascetic training.
It is said that five of the ten great disciples of Odaishi (who were originally from Shikoku) followed the route with the advice of Odaishi, and this is believed to be the beginning of the “two companions” of Odaishi and his disciples. Later, it is said that the monk Shunjobo Shigen of the Koya Sect was the first person to step on the frontier of Shikoku.

四国八十八ヶ所
お大師様が修行のために辿った辺地（へち）を、自分の脚で辿ることで、弘法大師の霊験にあやかりたい、という人々の願いから、「お遍路」というお参りのかたちが生まれました。
お大師様の十大弟子のうち五人（四国出身）が、お大師様のアドバイスを受けながら、この路を踏まれたのが始まりと言われており、これがお大師様と“同行二人”の始まりであると考えられています。いっぽう、民間人では、愛媛県の豪商だった河野衛門三郎がお大師様の足跡を辿り、その後、高野聖の俊乗房重源（しゅんじょうぼうちょうげん）大和尚が四国の辺地を最初に踏んだ人物であるといわれています。
