寺町通（てらまちどおり）
寺町通は京都市の北区から下京区にかけて延びる南北の通りで、
もともとは平安京時代の東端（東京極大路）に位置していました。
名前の由来は、
豊臣秀吉の都市改造により、寺院が京都の東側に集められ、
その前を通る道として「寺町通」と名付けられたことにあります。
現在は京都御苑の東側を通り、
歴史的な寺院が多く立ち並ぶエリアとして知られています。
観光地としても人気があり、古本屋や土産物店が並ぶ文化的な通りです。

In this video, we will take you through the streets of Kyoto,
which are said to be shaped like a checkerboard.
I ride my bike (and walk where I can’t) at a leisurely pace.

Teramachi-dori
North-south street that stretches from Kyoto’s Kita Ward to Shimogyo Ward,
and was originally located at the eastern end of the city during the Heian-kyo period (Higashi Kyogoku Oji).
The name comes from the fact that temples were gathered on the eastern side of Kyoto as a result of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s urban remodeling,
and the street was named “Teramachi-dori” as it passed in front of them.
Today, it runs along the east side of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and is known as an area lined with many historical temples.
It is also a popular tourist destination, and is a cultural street lined with second-hand bookstores and souvenir shops.
