Day 5 – Lake Kawaguchi and Oshino Hakkai

Today I went to Shinjuku in the morning and took the 8:25 highway bus to Lake Kawaguchi. Due to traffic jams, the original journey of over 2 hours turned into almost 4 hours. The return ticket originally booked for 3pm had to be cancelled and rescheduled for 4:30pm.

I arrived at Kawaguchiko Station around 12:00 pm and quickly assembled the bike, bought a sandwich at a convenience store for lunch and then headed to the lake to set off. It only took less than 20km to go around Lake Kawaguchi. I can see Mount Fuji in the first 1/3 of the way, so the pedestrian paths were relatively neat. Pedestrian path conditions on other sections of the road were relatively uneven and there were even no sidewalks to ride on, but the traffic was not heavy. Occasionally there were some parks on the shore where you could ride along the seaside and avoid the road.

I returned to Kawaguchiko Station in less than 2 hours and started to go to Oshino Hakkai. The one-way trip was about 10km with a total of two climbs. One was from Lake Kawaguchi to Fuji-Q Highland about 50m elevation. The other one was to climb 100m to the intersection of Oshino Hakkai. After passing Fuji-Q Highland, I chose a small road to avoid the busy highway.

It took less than an hour to arrive at Oshino Hakkai. I also came here last year when I was a tourist. Unfortunately, it was rainning heavily and only before we left that the weather cleared and we could see Mount Fuji. The weather was very nice today but there were too many tourists, both foreigners and locals, and I left after only 15 minutes.

Returning to Kawaguchiko before 4:00pm and went to check in at a famous convenience store, the curtains were all removed. I took the highway bus back to Shinjuku at 4:30pm, but encountered heavy traffic jam again, and it took almost 4 hours to arrive at Shinjuku Station. It was already 9:00pm when I arrived back at the hotel and hurriedly had dinner near the hotel.
