[ 2024 Shikoku 1000 ] [ 四囯一周 ] [ Day 5 – Kochi to Shimanto (Kubokawa) ] [ 高知至四万十窪川 ]

Riding distance: 89km Total distance: 391km

Today was relatively easy, only about 90km, with a few small climbs of 30-50m in the morning, and a big climb of more than 280m in the afternoon.

This morning we mostly cycled along the seaside. After leaving Kochi, I needed to cross the Urato Bridge, which was about 1.5km long and 50m high. Since the sidewalk was relatively narrow, less than one meter wide, it was a bit dangerous to ride on so I took the ferry instead.

The ferry leaves about once an hour. I chose 9:10 and rode about 18km from the hotel. After about 5km, I chose a quiet country road. There were basically not many cars but the road conditions were uneven. I arrived at the port in less than one and half an hour, and there was a toilet in the waiting room next to it.

The ferry only took 5 minutes to go to the other side, and only a few people using it, including a O’henro foreigner. After getting off the boat, I rode back to the seaside and continued my journey, sometimes along the seawall, sometimes along the road, nothing special. After about 58km, I arrived at the first stamping point, Roadside Station Susaki, but in the end I went to the Lawson convenience store opposite to buy lunch because I could sit down, rest and recharge the battery.

The original route was to turn to Anwa Coast, but it was closed due to construction, so I continued to climb along National Highway 56 and had to pass through a 1km long tunnel. After National Highway 56 passed Nakatosa, it began to climb up to Nanako Pass, climbing 280m in about 6 km. Although the slope was only about 4-5%, because it was relatively long, I needed to take a break in the middle to complete it.

After arriving at Nanako Pass, the next destination was the Roadside rest area Aguri-Kubokawa, which was more than 10 kilometers away. It was only a few kilometers away from today’s destination.

Today I stayed at the guest house opposite to Iwamotoji Templem, the no. 37th temple of the O’henro. It was not restricted to O’henro walkers. The room was Japanese-style with tatami mats. The bath and toilet are shared. Room rate was included dinner and breakfast.
