Fumiya walks us through DISTAR COFFEE and his THE H.W. DOG atelier!
Check out the bike intro vide from the description! You’ve got such a big space Yeah I know right You used to have a cafe in different area right? Yeah the shop used to be located in Tama area When Covid happens, the government provided us a fund for new business and me and my partner started this business, with the aim to stimulate the local area My friend made this TANUKI brand and the studio And me and my wife started this cafe So there was an apparel shop and cafe in the same space The cafe is actually moving to Harajuku in this June (and we went there already!) This place stays because this is close to my home in Tama So we are opening the new one in Harajuku So this place is half TANUKI brand and half DISTAR COFFEE Upstairs is also used by both of us For us, the ground floor is cafe and the upstairs is used to my hat brand called THE HW DOG THE HW DOG has lots of foreign customers, so I use it as storage, office, and distribution center Also there is an atelier for bespoke hats Can you tell me your background? I worked for the hat brand called CA4LA for 9 years And I was in manufacturing department and repair department as CA4LA used to handle imported brands like Borsalino and Stetson etc So yeah, I was working with repairer to fix these hats when they are sent back to the factory After having worked for 2 years, I became a designer and worked as designer for about 7 years So I worked for CA4LA for 9 years then I established my own brand, THE HW DOG It took long to establish my own brand tho I was doing pretty much EVERYTHING like design, operation, sales etc There were a few staffs but I used to drive a van with carrying my products all around Japan Wow Like going to Hokkaido from Tokyo as a day trip Fumiya made an espresso for me I did leveling and dosing You see, I change the strength depending on its condition There are lots of ways to do this, so this is just my style to do this It might be easier to see how the drip goes down from here Ah right It’s dripping 15~16sec Usually it’s much faster But this one drips much slower The drips goes towards the middle Espressos have heart, crema and body, and the darkest is heart The middle is body and the lightest colors are crema Yeah the interior was determined by both of us. We loved grey so we painted in grey This place used to be a local bank This restroom used to be a safe room Ah really!? The wall is too thick and it’s 8inch plus thick It was super hard to break it so we decided to make it restroom I didn’t know that this was a bank The outside looked a typical bank with bricks, so we decided to paint it with mortar Ok so this was a safe huh? Yeah, it’s got a code box here and there was a big handle here I see Wow this is huge This is like a movie set You know, explode the wall and get in haha Seriously this is so thick Going upstairs This place is so cool! This place is also owned half and half. The left side is the place where they make clothes They make tags and stuffs here…we only do hats/caps tho Are you the only one who can make hats now? You mean if I have other staffs to make hats? Just me I raised one before but he graduated and made his own brand Does your origin come from these hats rather than caps? Hmmm I learned how to make hats at CA4LA but I am still evolving The way to make hats in Japan is same as Europeans Europeans and Americans make in a different way If you look at this…this is the tool to make European hats Putting brims here is how to make hats in European way The way American make hats is you put this head first They put fabric here and stretch it like this. You might have seen some videos how American make You strap the strings here and adjust the brim But they don’t use these brims Instead, they put the hats onto this from bottom Then ironing and adjusting the brim This isn’t the way I learned at my previous company, and I figured (am still figuring) the new way by try and error I need to be better at it. I am still learning How to use sewing machine is also different in American way and European way Japaneses/European starts with sewing inside first You know like this, from inside But in American way, sewing from outside with using this sewing machine Interesting You see, they use different sewing machines That American sewing machine is very hard to find Most sewing machines drop needles straight but this one drops diagonally That one is replica tho, made in either Taiwan or Hong Kong But few years ago, I bought the original one SINGER’s from 1946-1948, which was only produced for 2 years It’s in the sewing machine factory to get repair done But you know, the more I know stuffs, the deeper it makes me want to go, so I had to buy the original one haha I had to find an original one Same as bike haha Such a strong commitment haha Yeah but I still think I need to evolve better Btw this is a conformator These are the tools to major the size of head back then These are from 1900 Holy moly It’s not 1900’s, is from 1900 These are made in France Back in the day, people who wore hats were royal families in the UK There was a colonial problem back then right So yeah, French people used to make these hats for British You can still find those shops in Paris You know the material shops etc. I sometimes go to Paris to make wood base hats It’s funny that now Italian does those wood base for hats haha So yeah…hats are from France and these are made in France I collect them all by taking lots of time These are pairs Does that measure the height and width of your head? This is to measure the outer circumference This is the one I actually use now Ah do you actually use it? Yeah I use this I don’t use this often so it’s got lots of dirt on it I have them as a stock just in case I have some actual stuffs over there So yeah, this measures the outer circumference So that I know the size First thing first, I measure the size The way it works is that you put the paper here Then I put this tool on customers head Then I press this down Then paper gets traced You can see the shape right? The front, back, left and right Then I put the harder paper to finalize the shape Now you can know the actual Inner diameter So this is the head shape. This one is actually pretty distorted Oh yeah true The left side is protruded but the right side isn’t For those who have these distorted head shape have to wear big size Or simply it doesn’t look good because the brims are also distorted when you wear it It would be great to make one wood base so that you can always adjust the size and shape with using it even when you get new hats This can definitely be applied to helmets repair too huh You know if the person have distorted head, they may need to wear size M even though their actual size should be S Good point, you can ask Hellmart (a vintage helmet shop in Tokyo) to adjust sponges by using this wood base haha I know right, you can ask them to shave the shell deeper on this/that side etc Yeah you can ask to add more sponges on this side etc This might become a new business haha Stay tuned for the next week!

10:28 mins Fumiya's comment translates as "France was a colony of the UK"! If you have any French viewers they'll be outraged🤣. Made me laugh a lot. Looking forward to the next instalment, although I'm surprised Fumiya has any time to ride his bike with all his different business interests.
話しっかり深掘りして聞いてくれて、独立する大変さがわかるいい内容。僕も帽子なかなかしっくりこないのは頭のいびつな形だからだったんだ。あの木型帽子好きなひとは気になりそう!
