From Lucky’s Picture Diary

It is the second day after arriving at Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara Islands, a World Natural Heritage site 1,000 kilometers from Tokyo.
Master Pyonta and I rented bicycles and headed for the Sakaiura Beach.

It was 3.5 kilometers from the tourist information center “B-Ship,” and from the halfway point, the road went steeply uphill.

I pulled my bicycle up the hill, wheezing like a rattlesnake.
I saw a calm beach and the wreck of the Hinkou Maru, which was on duty as a munitions carrier at the end of the Pacific War.

The Hinkou was torpedoed and ran aground in Sakaiura in 1944.
Eighty years have passed since then, and although it has decayed and lost its original shape, it is a valuable war site under the water that can be only reached with snorkeling.

We left our bicycles at the top of the hill and descended quite steeply to reach the beautiful beach.

From a pavilion thatched with hemp palm leaves, we could barely make out the wreck emerging from the water.

It was a windy day, so the water was not clear.

As we snorkeled along, a sight like an ancient ruin appeared before us.
The wreck seemed to be serving as a wave breaker, and there alone was a world of calm.

Decayed over the years and decorated with coral, fish were swimming lazily.

Under huge pillars that looked like collapsed masts, whitetip reef sharks were taking naps together.

It reminded me of the undersea scenery of the “Nokosare-Jima”, the island left behind as depicted in the anime-movie “Future Boy Conan”.

We swam counterclockwise around the wreck. It was quite a distance, and we could easily imagine that it was a large, magnificent ship.

Had we not snorkeled around it, we would not have understood the whole picture.
It was a strange sight: majestic, serene, a little sad, like an ancient ruin.
