38 – EUROPE TOUR | LE PORTUGAL EN VÉLO PLIANT : L’ALGARVE 🚴|
Episode 38 – The Beauties of the Algarve (Portugal) by folding bike (Amsterdam to Lisbon by Brompton folding bike and train) In this new episode, I cross by folding bike, the last country of this tour of Europe, Portugal. Direction the Algarve, along Eurovélo 1. In fact, it’s not too hot. The weather is perfect.
So good, I love it. This is the Natural Park of the Coastal Dunes at Monte Gordo. It is too beautiful. Subscribe A short climb to warm up. At least it takes us through quiet little roads, it’s so good. There’s the golf course on the left. The salt marshes, friends
Near Tavira a few kilometers away. Oh Eurovélo 1, there is the Atlantic Coast Route sign Look friends, I have arrived at the small village of Santa Luzia. Oh it’s very cute. A small bench with a small parasol, small boats. But look at this cute little place with no people. I adore.
Are you okay Archie? Archie, he’s holding on to the rocky paths, I’m still scared but no, no, everything’s fine. We’re going to have a little snack, that’s a must Oh damn, life, life, life, life, I love it. for now, I love it, I’m enjoying it. apart from the small roads with small stones.
I adore. Oh, it’s beautiful there! No, but look at it friends, it’s crazy! Archie, we’re here chouchou Everything is beautiful here! We left again this morning. No, but look at the beautiful day. I don’t have the words, I really don’t have the words. It’s so good, it’s incredible. I was welcomed yesterday,
After Tavira, by a Swiss couple. And frankly, it’s one of my best encounters of the trip. I had quite a few, many great encounters. This is really a very nice meeting. They are such welcoming people. They had prepared a little aperitif. There, she gave me some cake to leave
The cake which she prepared a chocolate cake they were very attentive they have been coming here for seven years but they also live in Switzerland and they are passionate about ornithology so it was really exciting to chat with them about what they are doing to help scientists.
So they observe a particular species of seagull. They observe the seagulls’ rings and then they do everything, a whole listing to give the scientists news. It is exciting. And they go on bicycle trips, so there, it’s magnificent. They do trips by bike, recumbent bike and tricycle and there they took a bike trip
To Scandinavia for six months. Um, it was great to chat with them, Norway, Finland. They like the quiet bike trip, where you can see landscapes. They told me lots of anecdotes that happened to them while cycling. It was fabulous. It was fabulous to see people who are retired and love cycling
And aren’t afraid to step out of their comfort zone. They go wild camping and they love it. They love it and it’s great. It’s so good to be with curious people, it gives you energy, in fact, people who are adorable, who really want to take care of you.
And even then, what was great was that they were also interested in Brompton. They tried Brompton and now they want to buy one. They are won over by the bike and they found it crazy, in fact, that when you pedal, you don’t feel the baggage so much and it’s really a different feeling.
That’s what I tell everyone and so I tell people to be careful, because if you try a Brompton, you’re going to want to buy one afterwards. That’s the risk with a Brompton. So really an excellent moment, an excellent moment that reenergized me until the end of the trip.
There, they gave me a lot of advice There’s a little bit there, I’m going to take a part of the train because it’s not very nice between Olhão and Faro and they told me that I can take the bike, you pay directly on the train. It’s a bit old-fashioned It’s perfect.
Before arriving in Olhão, I meet Sébastien, the German cycle tourist whom I had met on the boat at the Portuguese border. We will cycle a few kilometers together before our roads separate again. After Faro, you can take the ecovia, the dirt cycle path, but there are stones. It’s just boring in a Brompton.
I took the road, it was a bit boring. We are on a beautiful cycle path after Vilamoura. It’s very nice. There are fifteen kilometers left to Albufeira. It will be good to sit down and eat. I should go shopping ohlala I should go shopping. Well, I arrived at the Albufeira campsite.
Honestly, it’s cool. It’s 7€, but we’re a little on top of each other. But hey, it’s correct. It was a big day today so whatever, whatever. There I saw a small grocery store just below the campsite. So we’re going to go to the Portuguese grocery store for the first time friends.
But 7 € frankly, to have a good shower. I prefer that to wild camping. I tell myself this is the minimum for me. I tell myself that you have an effort throughout the day and less, you can just relax in a safe place but hey, it’s personal.
So there, the small grocery store is a kilometer away, frankly, it’s okay. I wanted to stay quiet but hey, we’re still going to go buy two or three things for this evening at least some pasta, because I have some cornmeal there. But cornmeal is disgusting, it’s not good. Friends,
I made tuna pasta, it’s so good, it’s too, seriously so good. It feels so good after a day like that. Ah it’s cool, so good, I love it. Showering and eating are the best times. The dishes are done! It’s humid in fact, it’s crazy in the evening, the humidity
And yet it’s 17 degrees with 80% humidity. It’s going down quickly, it’s crazy, it’s crazy, it’s crazy, come on , I put the little saucepan on the luggage rack and that’s it! Friends, I’m leaving the campsite in Albufeira. I didn’t film too much because we were a little on top of each other.
There wasn’t much privacy, so it wasn’t the best. But hey, I made some morning tea, I still slept well and then we left. Direction Lagos. A big day today because there are some climbs, we’re going to have a laugh. So there it is Albufeira that we have just left.
These beaches are really beautiful. There, we have the small port with the fishermen and there, we start the cliffs. It really changes. Anyway, I tell myself that even if there are climbs and I can’t get up and at worst we push the bike, there is always a solution.
In the end, there is no problem. Unless it’s a 1 km climb. Oh the fig trees what the fig trees my god. I love it It’s beautiful here because it’s quiet, it’s not the tourist season there are restaurants open and things to do thank you very much, enjoy
Yes I’ll send you my information, I have a channel YouTube too. I’ll tell you about my improbable encounter just now. I met three people who were pedaling Bike Friday, a folding bike. Two Canadians and an American. Seriously at a crossroads in Portugal, it’s improbable.
He had Canada written in large letters on the jersey. I adore. I love cycling for that, it’s fantastic. You meet people you would never have had the opportunity to meet at a bend in the road, around a bend. And there you go. I adore. It’s excellent. This beautiful meeting made my day.
Well, we left again, huh? Come on, let’s take it easy. Either way, we can’t go any faster. One foot after the other as they say I hate you GPS I hate you I hate you. He tells me it’s that way, so we’ll go that way. Is this the Ecovia? Hallelujah Hallelujah, the road.
Would we like a little snack here? Ferragudo, it’s beautiful! Come on, let’s have a little snack. Small cheese sandwich. It’s simple, today with a little agave syrup, honestly, it’s good. Sweet and salty is the best. No, the seagull, are you going to steal my sandwich? eh ? Seriously,
Do you really want to come close? No! I am getting angry. Look where the seagull is, you’re not afraid. Do you want to steal my sandwich? Relax Look friends, I just saw a stork in the middle of a roundabout.
Oh, this is the first time I’ve seen one and there are plenty of them. There’s one over there and there’s another nest over there. I adore. I’m in shock, I’m amazed Oh, it’s so beautiful! Oh dear, she’s too beautiful, she’s too beautiful, She, she’s too beautiful. I adore. It’s crazy to see that.
It’s incredible. The stork ! I’m like a child. We’re going to try not to break our heads. There is one at every roundabout there is another here. It’s crazy. Oh my, it’s beautiful. I’m leaving Lagos again. Today I’m going to follow the normal route.
It’s going to be long, but shorter and less of a climb because by the cycle path, by the cycle path, it’s longer. So it should be fine. I think there is a shoulder, it’s 30 kilometers, then we turn off towards Sagres. We’re going to do that because I don’t feel like it otherwise.
Here we go, I’m not going to film a lot, it’s going to be the road. Let’s go ! Let’s go! Well, we have passed the hardest part, we have passed the hardest part, Lagos – Sagres, I arrive in Sagres in 1.8 kilometers. I’m so happy. I was really afraid of this road,
Knowing that the cycle path goes up and down and that it was longer. And ultimately, it’s not so bad. Sometimes it takes you along side roads, like old roads like this one for example. It’s an old road. After Vila Do Bispo, it’s the old road and there is really less elevation gain.
There are small hills on the normal road, but there is a large shoulder. I wanted to arrive early at 10 a.m. to go to Cape Saint-Vincent and enjoy. Well, that’s going to be it today. I’m so happy to have done the hardest part early in the morning.
Ah it’s crazy, it’s Canada over there, friends in the distance maybe we’ll see it. This is the place to eat, chouchou he sleeps there. Oh, I finally found a cute little bakery. I bought this but I don’t remember the name. It’s a fish thing.
It’s like meatloaf, I don’t really know what it is. The employee, she gave me her favorite dessert. It’s a pasteis de nata but with a layer of almond on top and afterwards, I had a normal pasteis de nata. Very cool. People all go to the beach and here there is no one
Here it seems wilder there is no big concrete tower. We left Sagres this morning, it’s not hot, I took out the gloves anyway. and overpants. So today, 50 kilometers along the west coast and I’m going to meet Anne and her family who also live there. They live in a tiny house
So I can’t wait to go meet them. Oh it’s beautiful there! it’s beautiful. It just makes this shit go up! Go chouchou! Come on, it goes down afterwards. We fucking did it! I’m going to cry, we did it. I just stopped on the side of the road to eat a cupcake.
Damn, they drive fast, it’s crazy. Ah, he’s going fast, he’s going fast. Look at this Here are the small white vans generally, it’s not a good sign. So there, I stopped on the side of the road. And sometimes, when I stop, I eat something
And I look at the messages I received from the publications I made. And honestly, I got lots of lovely, lovely messages. It really touches me to read this. I say to myself, wow, it’s great to have people like you who follow me,
Who believe in this and who encourage me to not give up. And wow! I feel really lucky. So I wanted to tell you, I wanted to film you behind the scenes of when I read your messages and you are at the top, really!
And I, every day, I say to myself but it’s not possible, how I’m going to be able to cycle this day, plus there are some elevation changes at the moment. And each time, I put one foot after the other and I don’t know and it happens. I don’t know how to explain,
When it’s flat, I say to myself good, it’s okay because in endurance when you’re launched, you’re launched But when you don’t know the road, when you don’t know what it’s going to be like, you don’t know if there’s going to be any elevation changes,
I’m always a little stressed, there’s always something in me that says oh damn Aurélie, maybe you’re not going to make it, maybe you’re not going to not arrive at your next destination. At the same time, if I don’t succeed, I stop first and that’s it.
I am always surprised at every step I take and I say to myself but I am impressed. I say to myself but it’s crazy! and it’s crazy how the body I’m touched to say that because the body really gets into the rhythm and it’s launched in fact
And I think that when you stop a bike trip, when it’s over, it’s is difficult because your body always wants to be moving and it asks for more every time. so I think that’s what makes you succeed every day. What I just said is really a very scientific explanation.
So that plus that, plus your messages your positive messages who believe in me, thank you, thank you. That’s happiness, that’s happiness. Well, we’ll arrive in Aljezur in no time. Ah the little bus, that’s nice too, buses that brush past like that always feel good. Well, we’ll have to leave again.
I respond to you by message, so it’s live this video will be released in a long time, but you will know that at that time I responded to messages. The shitty bus. Come on, let’s do the little climb. Oh it’s so good! it’s so good! it’s so good. I’ll stay there.
Oh, that’s great! This is the first time I’ve seen this since I arrived at the Portuguese, so well appointed. I swear it’s true. Finally, taking the road, It wasn’t so bad as taking Eurovélo 1. On the other hand, Eurovélo 1 was well marked. But hey, dirt roads are boring.
It’s true that it’s a joy to find places like that. When you’re on a bike, sometimes you want to have a very comfortable bench, it’s so good. Ah the bus, that’s twice, it shaves me. I’m sick of these shitty buses. Damn, damn, damn
If I do something wrong, I’ll get hit by the bus. Why is there a fucking bus here? it’s very small this road take the highway, do something, I don’t know. Oh, that’s annoying. no but buses are the worst. I swear, buses and vans are the worst, it’s not possible.
We are a multicultural family who speak several languages. The girls grew up in England. I’m French and my dad is Brazilian. So we said to ourselves that it was a good idea to improve our Portuguese, to know Portuguese culture better. and so we are starting our second year in Portugal.
So it was a self-construction accompanied by ‘Le Bois d’ici’ which is a company in Brittany. It took us three months because the pros build it quickly actually. So we were self-accompanied. Because self-construction generally takes a year and then we didn’t necessarily feel capable of doing it alone. It wasn’t us who
Did the exterior, put up the walls, we participated in it but they were in charge in order to satisfy their guarantee because for us, if we put for example the spikes in the rain shield it’s going to wet inside. so they don’t want novices, for example, to do this kind of work.
But we helped cut things out, assemble them, screw things together. We did the insulation inside, we installed the floor. So we still really participated in the construction of the house. but our work was more about the interior. Did you also participate in the plan? Yes quite.
We really participated in the design, the interior, the choice and the organization so that it worked with four people. That was very important for us and to think about it too. It’s like a bit of a Lego, you move the things you want to do each time.
You make 40,000 drawings and you realize that already your drawings, you do them in pencil because you are not an architect and therefore you always make a line there is never any thickness in the walls and in the end you say ah damn, there was that plus that plus that, it’s small details
But just five or ten cm of wall and in the end you don’t have the space to put the fridge. It was, it was great because it really involves brainstorming with several people, because it’s a life choice which is still quite different and therefore it’s important that everyone feels respected in their choices
And that everything the world is more or less the same as the others in terms of space and in terms of light and the view that one can have from one’s bed. Since the room is still only the bed, this is important.
So there you have it, we chose to have an additional window to the north because we have two bedrooms. Finally, we have three bedrooms upstairs. And then there’s the rest. The fact that there are three windows on the high side,
For the library in the middle and the other bedroom on the other side. So we have six solar panels which are offset since we are on a single slope, we are obliged to have solar panels separate from the tiny one. The advantage also is that we can in a hot climate
So it’s not a good example because we are in Portugal and we have no trees because we are really in an arid area and therefore the trees must be counted. But otherwise you could imagine having tree protection if necessary Yes Caramel and therefore having a certain shade, then being able to take advantage
Of solar panels a little further away, in a clearing for example, where there is sun. And the problem with solar and autonomy is that in fact we have to learn to live differently because energy is available when we generally don’t need it.
So, that is to say at 12 p.m., if we cook at 12 p.m. but that’s not usually when we cook great things. We will think more about baking a cake or a pie in the oven when it is evening and then taking a shower,
Etc., heating our water, it will be in the evening when there is no more sun, so it will be you have to wait until the morning to put energy back into these batteries once the sun has arrived or else think differently and say no
Cookies, I will make them at noon and I will eat them this evening. So when it rains, it’s great the water falls on the roof, it ends up being filtered a little bit with stones and there is a cloth in the cube at the very top, up there. Then she goes down.
There is another filter with stones there and then it fills our 400 liter tank. There, suddenly, you also store other things. Yes, there are some garden tools and a few things that are a bit cluttered , we don’t really know why, but we have them all the same, we have electrical cables.
We also have our moving boxes. These are boxes in which we put everything that is in the tiny inside, there are sixteen boxes and we manage to hold, the 16 small boxes and that fits into a box of car I managed to move everything.
That’s what’s extraordinary, is that everything that is in your tiny you put them in 16 boxes and you put it in the trunk of a 7-seater C4 Picasso car and that is holding. And you have two front seats to drive again and there, you say mmmm, that’s good in fact, it’s great
To compare with a classic house where you can live where you pack boxes infinitely, Even if we live in such a way much more minimalist than some, there is still accumulation and above all, we have young people growing up and that is a problem. We can’t stop them from growing.
So obviously, growing feet, things like that, then we have a cyclist so he has lots, lots, lots of cycling shoes, he has a lot more shoes than us. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, we don’t count anymore. And that’s also where our gas is.
That’s not very pretty, but that’s where the gas bottles are outside, connected by a pipe that goes inside to heat the water if necessary, if we didn’t have electricity and for cooking, since cooking with electricity independently is never a good idea. So when we enter,
We first have a bar office on the right which allows us to work both standing up and sitting on high stools. Then we have our living room, dining room, bed space too. That actually does it all. By putting it like this, it becomes less wide and will fit here. So what’s also good
Is that you can store it completely under the desk. It was the goal. It goes exactly there below, if you want. Then, you have to take out two cubes that are underneath. This will be used to rest the comb bed. And then, obviously, as we are filmed, the demonstration never works. Just shoot.
In fact, it is a very simple comb bed where we pull this part of the bed from the slats which are therefore independent of the others and which can be pulled. But really, quite simply. It’s a very simple thing, you have to pull it to the end.
You have to put the boxes underneath and then you’re all good. almost a double bed. Another important aspect of this space is where our two batteries and the system which converts solar energy into electrical energy are stored. So this is a device which is still important for the operation of the tiny
And which takes up space and each element weighs 25 kilos. We put the lid on it which also holds the cross, so that it remains solid and that’s great. I like being there, I like working standing up too. It’s nice because of the height and still not too badly thought out.
You have to think carefully about your space when you don’t have much of it. Ultimately, it may be the place that takes up the most space out of everything else. In terms of proportions, the kitchen worktop is almost longer than the office sofa.
When you come from a classic house, you say to yourself no it’s not possible a kitchen with three drawers and four people, but in fact also, yes yes it’s entirely possible I confirm, it’s been three years since we live like that. There is nothing missing, absolutely nothing.
It’s an illusion to make us believe that we need a ton of space that with teenagers we’re going to yell at each other, with no one who can slam a door it’s not going to be possible but yes yes it’s possible. There are lots of stereotypes that go with that.
Yes, it will have an impact on young people, on everyone. But it’s a choice that everyone has made. As soon as someone says we don’t want that anymore, we stop and do something else. That’s the heating, we don’t talk about it because since we’ve been in Portugal, we’ve never used it,
It’s our stove that allows us to have heating as soon as it’s cold. It’s a very small heater which comes, which comes from England, which is used on boats, boats… So you can’t find anything really, really smaller. When we watch videos of tiny houses there are people who have even smaller things
But who sometimes often use gas and not wood. This allows us to have just a clothes storage bench. which is not a wardrobe on purpose, because you can’t put much in wardrobes and there is vertical storage for each of the drawers.
A bit like Marie Kondo, so to speak, but which also allows again the same idea as with food, it allows you to get to the bottom because otherwise, it’s always the same, you always have things stuck basically that ultimately you shouldn’t have and you don’t see them, so you don’t put them
Well there I see them, I don’t necessarily put them either. So it’s a bad example, just for fun. But actually, there are also clothes that we even have in tiny, even when we’re a little minimalist, we say to ourselves oh well, it’s been a long time since I wore them.
Eventually, I would have to get rid of them and this means that each one has three drawers. Be careful, it’s really regulated here. Three drawers each one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three These are classic dry toilets with sawdust bin next to it made by us. No separator.
A classic, simple, easy-to-clean stainless steel bucket, a little heavy to carry when full. But the four of us empty it every day, we have compost and it’s great. To have a small wardrobe, you need sufficient width because if you only have that, it’s a bit ridiculous. So the place to store the food
Plus the little wardrobe well after installing steps, it was complicated. Nobody wanted to do them to me. So I said let’s do a different Japanese step, it’ll be fun. Hence the funny thing. Be careful, because when you go down, if you go from there to there,
There is almost a meter anyway and you can spread out on the sofa, you have to be careful. It’s a stretched linen canvas. What is this done in more traditional habitats? The choice here was also to limit the weight of a paneling that would be installed and which would add even more kilos.
Not everyone has tiny houses with only one staircase to go up to the mezzanine and a net that separates the two mezzanines. There are many that have two accesses. We found this idea and this choice of net excellent in the sense that it lets light through.
It also allows us to be a place where we can rest, read a book, play too, it’s possible, It depends who we play with. When girls play with Lego, little pieces, it’s great so that it falls on the people who are cooking. But it depends on what you’re playing.
It is a space that is ultimately not lost, which is luminous. And we had friends who came to sleep on it too. So we have two 90 cm beds, classic beds and here, we made them both small desks. So they have a small office. That’s still really nice
Where they can work, have their iPad. Doing activities doesn’t seem like a big office, we agree, but we live in a tiny house. They do things upstairs, they sometimes play upstairs But school mainly happens downstairs because we do things together, so we’re on the table. Offices are super ingenious, I love them.
Yes, it’s very simple, but it doesn’t take up that much space, but it still makes a small office. If you want to write, if you want to do things, whatever you can. Working on the real limits of one’s habitability in the world and questioning how we inhabit the world
I find is really useful for the disasters that we risk having to face, how we are going to manage water, all that and therefore its habitat, it doesn’t need to be gigantic, we don’t actually need much to be happy. That’s all.
After this beautiful meeting, I left Anne and her family as well as their neighbors, Estelle and Grégory, who lived in a camper van right next door. Head to the last stage of this trip to Lisbon. Phew! He’s going to pollute us. Friends, I’ll tell you about my meeting
Ah, I have something in my teeth. Damn! We will laugh. No, it’s not a good idea, it’s not a good idea, we’ll find another way. Thank you for watching. Subscribe

Finally! The episode where you arrive in Portugal. 😊
Bom dia lady, thanks again for the movie, I had many good laughs, 🤣 but I also suffered with you when the buses and trucks raced past you so closely. I hate that too. 🤬The journey is almost over, looking forward to the last part. 🤗
But the long journey has left its marks on you, at 13:16 it looks like you've gone mad 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks! Such a beautiful episode. I realized I missed some videos recently while I was busy. Looking forward to watch some episodes following days.
great content
That you for sharing. It made me want to go to Portugal. Did you find that all the sun and blue skies made you feel very optimistic? That’s what I was thinking when I watched the video.
I have to admit that I don't want this series to end, every video, every stage, interview and new corner of Europe that you visited makes me smile hugely, thank you for all the effort you put in video by video to give us this wonderful story, thank you for the love and good vibes as always, huge hug and congratulations dear friend!!!!
What kind of saddle to you have on your Brompton? Tom from Ohio
Hi Aurelie, fantastic video like always ❤
Trop bien ❤ x Sam gravel7;
Quel beau reportage
